Facebook's Wrongful Removal of Post Delays Critical Disease Alert in Ethiopia's Wolaita Area
The Company's Erroneous Removal of Wolaita Times Media Post on Deadly Disease Sparks Outcry Over Freedom of Speech and Accountability.
Wolaita Times, a media organization dedicated to professional journalism since 2019, has been broadcasting from exile since December 19, 2022, due to the arrest and harsh persecution of its journalists in Ethiopia and the lack of free press. Despite these challenges, Wolaita Times continues to bring crucial news to its audience through social media platforms, including Facebook. However, recent actions by #Facebook have raised serious concerns about freedom of speech and platform accountability.
One day ago, #Facebook wrongly removed a post by Wolaita Times that reported on an unknown disease killing many people in Ethiopia, particularly in the Wolaita area. Upon realizing the error, Wolaita Times Media Chief editor Journalist Natnael Gecho promptly responded to Facebook, asserting that the post did not contravene any of Facebook's community standards.
In a concerning incident, #Facebook wrongly took down a crucial media post highlighting a deadly disease outbreak in Ethiopia's Wolaita area. The post, intended to draw urgent attention and aid from relevant authorities, was removed without valid justification, resulting in a significant delay in the dissemination of life-saving information.
This critical post aimed to alert concerned bodies and prompt immediate intervention. Despite Wolaita Times contesting the removal and affirming that the content did not violate any community standards, #Facebook restored the post only after more than 10 hours, without issuing an apology or providing an official reason for the error.
"The wrongful removal of our post delayed essential information from reaching authorities who could have acted to mitigate the health crisis in Wolaita. Facebook's lack of transparency and accountability in this matter is deeply concerning," stated a chief editor from Wolaita Times.
This incident is not isolated. Last year, starting from February 18, 2023, Facebook imposed multiple restrictions on the Wolaita Times page, alleging a violation of community standards. The content in question was a photo posted on August 16, 2021, depicting Afghans and American military personnel at an airport in Afghanistan.
Despite being in circulation for more than two years and originating from another media source, the photo led to the imposition of these restrictions. Multiple attempts to report complaints and seek clarification from Facebook went unanswered, leaving the unjust restrictions in place.
"The ongoing restrictions and lack of response from Facebook not only compromise the dissemination of critical information but also undermine the principles of free speech.
It is imperative for social media platforms to ensure that valid and relevant information is not censored unjustly, as the public's right to know must be protected," the representative added.
These incidents underline the broader issues related to the content review processes of social media companies. The ability to share accurate and timely information, especially during crises, is vital. Erroneous actions by platforms can have severe repercussions, hindering necessary support and response efforts.
The recurring wrongful actions by Facebook highlight the urgent need for more reliable and transparent content moderation policies. Social media platforms must ensure the swift and accurate dissemination of information, particularly during emergencies when timely intervention can save lives.
Wolaita Times Media calls for #Facebook to review and improve its moderation policies, upholding the principles of free speech and ensuring accountability for its actions. As more communities depend on social media for real-time updates, it is paramount that critical information is not obstructed due to preventable errors.
