Emerging leftist groups during the counterculture movement in the 60s and 70s are often claimed to be radical leftists or marxists who were responsible for a majority of the modern social issues in America, however the supposition of these organizations operating under a truly marxist or socialist paradigm is fundamentally flawed. The New Left was primarily influenced by the Frankfurt School, an anti-Soviet pseudo-leftist group funded by the CIA and Rockefeller Foundation. This school of thought uses critical theory as the main justification for its social and economic criticisms, which are usually based in identity politics and challenging systemic power relations. The Frankfurt School and critical theory were applied as part of a larger strategy to combat communism during the cold war and subvert the rising socialist movements through psychological operations.
