Sahl ibn Sa’d (raḍiyAllāhu ‘anhu) reported:

The Angel Gabriel (‘alayhis-salām) came to the Prophet of Allah (sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam), and he said,

O Muhammad, live as you wish, for you will die.
• Work as you wish, for you will be repaid accordingly.
• Love whomever you wish, for you will be separated.

• Know that the nobility of the believer is in prayer at night and his honor is in his independence of the people
.

Wahb bin Munabbih (rahimahullah) said:

The best (most honorable) of deeds of the believers are the Tahajjud and the Qiyam al-Layl (prayers).

Tahajjud: One goes to sleep and wakes up in the last third of the night and prays.

Qiyam al-Layl: prayed without sleep.

{كَانُوا قَلِيلًا مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ}

They used to sleep but little by night [invoking their Lord (Allah) and praying, with fear and hope].

{وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ}

And in the hours before dawn, they were (found) asking (Allah) for forgiveness

"Abdullah is a good man. If he only prayed at night."

So after that ‘Abdullah only used to sleep a little at night.

“Learn and recite the Quran, for to one who learns, recites and uses it in prayer at night (tahajjud/qiyam), is like a bag filled with musk whose fragrance diffuses itself everywhere; and he who learns it and goes to sleep having it within him is like a bag with musk tied up in it.”

Tafseer al-Baghawi (rahimahullah):

Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (radiyAllahu ‘anhu), used to pray at night (the night prayers) and (when he) would see his small child sleeping then he would say, “this is for your bright future” and whilst crying would recite:

وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَالِحًا

“And their father was righteous” Surat al-Kahf, 82

lbn Abbas (radiyAllahu ’anhu) said (commenting on this verse):

“They (the two orphans mentioned in Surah al-Kahf) were protected by the righteousness of their father.”

Saeed lbn Musayyib
(radiyAllahu ‘anhu) said: “I worship, and then when I remember my child(ren), I increase in my worship"

“I endured (the hardship of standing in) the night prayer for one year and (was blessed with) a comforting bliss/enjoyment of it for twenty years.”

Ibn al-Qayyim
(rahimahullah) said:

Whoever is given comfort (lit. finds
the coolness of his eyes) in prayers (salah; nawafil, duha, night prayer etc),

will not find in (doing) it any stress or hardship/difficulty
(it will be made easy for him)
