What Can and Cannot be Done for the Deceased

📌 Gathering in a Mosque or a hired hall etc., after someone’s death (after the Janāzah and burial) to receive condolences is not from the Sunnah or the practice of the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them) — it is an innovation (bid’ah) and prohibited.

As for the legislated condolences such that a man visits his brother to console him in his house, or when he meets him in the street, at the masjid, at a shop, or the farm, etc., then there is no harm in his brothers visiting him to console him concerning the loss of his father, his brother or his mother (etc).

As for preparing food for visitors, or calling reciters who recite for the deceased or other affairs that are done for the deceased upon his death for three days, or after forty days, or after a year, then all of these [events] have no basis in Islam.

Likewise, gathering people at a Masjid or hall to receive condolences and making congregational du’ās (supplications) for the deceased, then this is an innovation in the Religion not practiced by the Prophet (salallāhu ’alaihi wasallam) or his Companions and followers.

Rather, du’ā (supplication) should be made for the deceased: du’a to Allah for his forgiveness and mercy. Also, charity is given on his behalf with what is easy to give, at any time, even if it is years after his death. Giving sadaqah (charity) benefits the deceased, du’a benefits the deceased, likewise making Hajj and ‘Umrah on his behalf and paying off his debts – all of this benefits the dead person.

Imām Ash-Shāfi’ī (d.204H) said in Al-Umm (1/248):

“I hold the Mātam (gathering for mourning and lamenting) to be hated, even if they do not cry, for it is a revival of grief, and is a burden on provisions, alongside conflicting with what has been stated in the narration.” It is as if he is referring to the hadeeth of Jarīr Ibn Abdillāh.

Ibn Al-Humām likewise declared the practice of hosting people after a burial at the home of the deceased and making food (for guests) to be something hated and he said, “It is an ugly innovation (bid’ah).” (See Sharhul-Hidāyah 2/565)

From the deplorable innovations is to remove furnishings from the home of the family of the deceased in order to make space for the people to gather for mourning and receive condolences, and to remain in that state for seven (or three) days – and then to return back the furnishings. (See: Al-Madkhal 3/279-280 and Ahkām al-Janā’iz of Al-Albānī, pp. 210, 211, 320)

The term mātam is commonly used by the common people who claim that to gather (for mourning) is a part of their culture, even though there is no proof for it, and it contradicts the Sunnah.

The Imam of Hadeeth and Sunnah, Shaikh Al-Albānī (may Allah shower him with mercy) stated: It is necessary to avoid two matters:

1. Gathering to receive condolences in a specified location such as a house, or the cemetery or a masjid.
2. Preparation of food by the household of the family for those coming to give condolences.

This is due to the hadeeth of Jarīr Ibn Abdillāh Al-Bajali (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) who said, “We [the Companions] would consider gathering to visit the house of the deceased and making food after their burial, both to be from wailing over them.” (Ahmad, 6905 and Ibn Mājah 1/490 – its chain of narration is authentic upon the conditions of Bukhāri and Muslim)

💖"Be My Valentine" Harmless or Ḥarām?

Valentine's Day, with it origins steeped in the Christian shirk of honouring the "martyr" St. Valentine of Rome, is a feast or tradition that has become commercialised to reflect wining, dining and gifting in the name of romance.

Muslim are not in need of imitating these traditions, whether interpreted traditionally or contemporarily.

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

Grade: Ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) according to Imām al-Albanī

The Prophet (ﷺ) exemplified the best behaviour between man and wife.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The best of you are the best to their families, and I am the best to my family. When your companion dies, then do not abuse him.”

Grade: Ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) according to al-Tirmidhi

On a daily basis, the spouses should live with one another in kindness, speaking with good speech, interacting with humility, lowering the wing of mercy to one another. Islām teaches spouses how to speak, act and even approach one another intimately with the best of guidance from the Book and the Sunnah. Why would we ever look to the traditions of the unbelievers who speak with foul speech, act with scandalousness, and lack basic hygiene. Lovebirds tonight, dumped in the morning.

It is only the deception of Shayṭān that turns a Muslim towards admiring the traditions of the disbelievers. Allāh has granted you much more in Islām.

📝Advice to the Young Salafī: Verify Students of Knowledge

Question to Shaykh Anwar Wright: In the city of Vancouver, Canada, there are a number of graduates from the Islamic universities in Saudi Arabia. In some cases, they have set up classes in centres and masjids not known for salafiyyah. Some of the youth who are new to salafiyyah have gathered around them. However, they have some questions about this. When they ask these individuals what scholars they take from, they will mention some of the kibar (major scholars). When it comes to teaching they will teach from popular books of aqidah (i.e. Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, Ṣifah Ṣalāt al-Nabī etc.). However, in some cases, if they are asked about Salafis who preceded them (in the daʿwah), like when asked about Salafi Publications they give obscure answers such as, “we do not know anything bad of them" or when asked about TROID (which has been present in Canada for 27 years), they say: “I’m not aware of them”. What is your advice to the young Salafi who is trying to ascertain who to take knowledge from in the West?

Brothers and sisters, the beautiful month of Ramaḍān draws near again.

As we all anticipate Bayt-ul-Abyāt's (Home of Verses') RAMAḌĀN DAILY POETRY SERIES 6.0 (1446 A. H.), we will have a throwback to ❝Madhhabī wa ʿAqīdatī; My Doctrine and Creed❞ through the month of Shaʿbān, in shāʾ Allāh.

❝Madhhabī wa ʿAqīdatī; My Doctrine and Creed❞ was the theme of the Ramaḍān Daily Poetry Series 5.0 (1445 A. H.). The theme was extracted from the poem Lāmiyyah, ascribed to Shaykh Al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله). And because of that, last year's Ramaḍān Daily Poetry Series comprised poems written around the most important topics in the Lāmiyyah poem. But that was not all.

We uploaded videos of the recitations of the sixteen lines of Lāmiyyah for us all to listen to, memorise, and/or revise. And we followed that up with audios of the explanations of the scholars of Sunnah on the poem. Alḥamdulillāh.

Let's try to revise what we memorised last year together again. May Allāh make it easy.

While we reminisce these benefits from last year together, let's start preparing for the upcoming Ramaḍān already. We ask Allāh to spare our lives till then and beyond.

🅰️𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫: You mean you want to eat even during prayer? 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱. Spit it out. Do not do that [i.e. swallow it]. Take it out and place it in a tissue to exit from the differing [i.e. among the scholars with regards to the ruling].

Some scholars believe that if you swallow anything, even a small amount, it counts as eating, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝘀❗️

Question: What is the ruling on listening to music and the ruling on listening to anāshīd without musical instruments?

Answer: Allāh sent down the Qurʾān and decreed that it would take away worries and grief.

Allāh's Messenger (ﷺ) said, whoever is afflicted by worry or grief, he should say,

”اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ، ابْنُ عَبْـدِكَ، ابْنُ أَمَتِـكَ، نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ، سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ، أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَداً مِنْ خَلْقِـكَ، أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الغَيْبِ عِنْـدَكَ، أَنْ تَجْعَلَ القُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي، وجَلَاءَ حُزْنِي وذَهَابَ هَمِّي“

“O Allah, I am Your slave and the son of Your male slave and the son of your female slave. My forelock is in Your Hand (i.e., You have control over me). Your Judgment upon me is assured and Your Decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have named Yourself with, revealed in Your Book, taught any one of Your creation or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen that is with You, to make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness and the reliever of my distress.”

The Qurʾān removes worries, relieves stress, and illuminates the chest.

Allāh revealed the best speech. The Messenger used to listen to the Qurʾān. He would ask the companions to recite the Qurʾān to Him.

The Muslim's heart was prepared for the Qurʾān.

Beware of being afflicted by this music. When you listen to music, you have substituted it for the Qurʾān. And how can you substitute what is extremely bad for the best of things?

The love of Qurʾān and music cannot come together in a Muslim's heart.

If Allāh opens your heart to the Qurʾān, whenever you hear it being recited, you feel its impact on your body and it softens your heart. As for music, it only increases you in distance from Allāh.

As for nashīd, it is from the things that are specific to women. On certain august occasions, there's no problem with women listening to it and beating the duff, with moderation.

As for men listening to anāshīd, this is nothing but immorality and effeminacy.

Al-ʿAlīm (The All-Knowing) is one of the beautiful names of Allāh. The attribute of knowledge is derived from it. An all-encompassing knowledge that does not leave anything out.

He knows what was, what is, and what will be.

Reciting those attributes makes you fear (Allāh).

We must teach the children about Allāh's knowledge. Caution them with the knowledge of Allāh about everything they do.

{ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمࣱ }

“...and know that Allâh is All-Aware of everything.” [Sūrah Al-Baqarah: 231]

The first thing Luqmān taught his son was the ʿAqīdah. Among his advice is his statement:

{ یَـٰبُنَیَّ إِنَّهَاۤ إِن تَكُ مِثۡقَالَ حَبَّةࣲ مِّنۡ خَرۡدَلࣲ فَتَكُن فِی صَخۡرَةٍ أَوۡ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰ⁠تِ أَوۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ یَأۡتِ بِهَا ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَطِیفٌ خَبِیرࣱ }

“O my son! If it be (anything) equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed, and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens or in the earth, Allâh will bring it forth. Verily, Allâh is Subtle (in bringing out that grain), Well-Aware (of its place).“ [Sūrah Luqmān: 16]

Meaning: I might be absent, I might pass away, but no matter what, Allāh is always knowledgeable of what you do and sees all.

He knows the matters that did not occur, and how they would have occurred had they occurred.

The evidence for that is in Sūrah al-Anʿām:

{ وَلَوۡ تَرَىٰۤ إِذۡ وُقِفُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰلَیۡتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلَا نُكَذِّبَ بِـَٔایَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝ بَلۡ بَدَا لَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُخۡفُونَ مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَلَوۡ رُدُّوا۟ لَعَادُوا۟ لِمَا نُهُوا۟ عَنۡهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ }

“If you could but see when they will be held over the (Hell) Fire! They will say: Would that we were but sent back (to the world)! Then we would not deny the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.) of our Lord, and we would be of the believers! Nay, it has become manifest to them what they had been before. But if they were returned (to the world), they would certainly revert to that which they were forbidden. And indeed they are liars.“ [Sūrah al-Anʿām: 27-28]
