๐Ÿ“What is Writing?

In the previous post, when we juxtaposed IELTS writing and true writing, we critiqued the former for being too formulaic, artificial, and lacking the human voice that actual writing champions. Today, we will analyze the latter, exploring writing (in its true essence) and its importance.

A world-renowned novel writer, Stephen King, remarked on his unique take on writing in his very own memoir: "Writing is akin to telepathyโ€”transmitting one's inner thoughts directly to a reader." King, however, does not espouse the use of fancy words or complex grammar structures. He emphasizes a single fact: delivering your thoughts properly. Thus, from a certain perspective, we could argue that writing and thinking are intertwined, working in tandem to further one's intellect. Clear writing conveys clear thinking. In other words, it conveys intelligence.

King is not the first writer to note this matter. Orwell, on the same page, decorated the literary world with his quotes on the importance of writing. "If people cannot write well, they cannot think well, and if they cannot think well, others will do their thinking for them."

Putting aside standardized tests, college applications, and any forced homework our teachers assigned, humans did not pick up a pen and a paper to boast their unique literary maneuvers. When attempting the earlier drafts of Macbeth, for example, Shakespeare did not push his pronouns (though a little fancy) to receive applause for his clever choice of words. He was pushing his ideas, his thoughts, his inner thoughts as King best puts it.

Do you want to be a great user of learned structures, gimmicky words, and unfitting phrases or do you want to be a great writer? A great thinker?

But do you know how to be a great writer?

๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ›IELTS Writing vs Actual Writing!

It is a common tendency among many Uzbek students to deem their ielts writing scores as actual indicators of their writing skills. However, this is nothing but a poor speculation. Here are key reasons why it is so.

First, writing in IELTS operates under limited time constraints---just 60 minutes for at least 400 words of essays. This constraint often forces candidates to prioritize speed over depth, leaving them little to no time to reflect on proper ways to express their ideas. In real-world scenarios, however, including when you are a book writer, quality writing entails deep, thorough brainstorming and lots of editing, a habit impossible with the limited time of IELTS.

Second, IELTS writing hugely relies on specific, narrow markers to evaluate the writing score of a candidate. With grammar, coherence, vocabulary, and task achievement, one could easily get a high score in this specific section, despite lacking other significant factors in the art of crafting ideas. While the aforementioned traits are surely essential in estimating the quality of writing, there are far more important factors such as the originality of ideas and persuasiveness of the arguments. Improving these traits takes more than getting a high score on your IELTS exam.

Third, the very standardized nature of the writing prompts in IELTS can also prove why it is not equivalent to general writing. The questions in Task 1 and Task 2 are usually generic or formulaic, stripping the candidates away from the chance to showcase their unique tone and voice. Real-life writing, on the other hand, allows writers to tailor their tone, style, and content to suit different audiences and purposesโ€”an essential skill that goes largely untested in IELTS.

In conclusion, while IELTS Writing provides a useful benchmark for English proficiency, it falls short of capturing the full spectrum of a person's writing and thinking abilities. Thus, we should not rely on IELTS alone to deem an individual a bad or a good writer.

But a natural question comes: If IELTS Writing is not the actual writing, what is Writing then?

Answering common questions about The SATashkent Challenge 2025 ๐Ÿ”ฅ

1. Why 11-graders are not allowed to apply?
โ€” Because we want to give a bigger chance for the younger generation which is just getting started on their SAT and college application journeys. We specifically want them to get involved in the challenges of this contest that hopefully will inspire them to work harder in a team, prepare them for further academic success specifically regarding SAT and College application and help them gain a large amount of networking through our event.

2. Can viewers come to the event?
โ€” Yes! There will be more than 100 available seats. We will send a different applications form for viewers soon.

3. Who is the guest speaker that will give a masterclass on getting into a top university?
โ€” We will announce soon)

4. What will be in the main event?
โ€” It will be a Zakovat style competition where teams that pass the first two stages of selection will compete in four rounds with different questions that include Admissions, Critical Reasoning, Logic and Math related questions. The top 3 teams at the end will receive their promised money prizes)

5. Should I have a team to be able to apply?
โ€” No! Everyone applies on their own. You do not need a team. If you successfully pass to stage 3, we ourselves will put you in a team depending on where you currently study (for example, if you are from Public school, you will be in a team with people who are also from Public School).

They offer aid to ints in the form of the global scholars program: essentially, 20-40 internationals will be given as much as they need (many have received full rides).

That's out of the roughly 600 who enroll yearly. So chances are low but not horrible, I've met quite a few on campus.

Essentially, you'll need a 1500/good stats, good entrepreneurial or family business involvement (family business involvement is really looked at well at babson), and some unique side/hobby.

I'm hoping this year there'll be an admit from Uzbekistan: if not this year, maybe the next. Legit if you fit these reqs and approach me in August I'll help potentially free or very very discounted.

โš ๏ธBig SAT Updates are coming

Removal of Practice Tests 1-3:
These tests will no longer be available in Bluebook after February 3, 2025.

Recommendation: Avoid using these tests for two key reasons:
1)They are outdated and no longer reflect the current SAT format or accurately predict your real score.
2)Many questions from these tests will appear in the new Practice Tests 8-10, which could spoil the experience and make those new tests less authentic for practice.

New Practice Tests:

Tests 4-6: Still excellent resources for prep.
Test 7: The most up-to-date and authentic practice for the 2025 SATโ€”make it your priority!
Tests 8-10: Updated with fresh and selected questions from the old tests. Perfect for honing your skills with new SAT formats.

New September Test Date:
Starting in 2025, students have an additional test date. Plan your testing strategy wisely to take advantage of this flexibility.

Content Changes:
The SAT is evolving with changes in tested skills and question difficulty. Stay updated and adapt your study plan as new information becomes available.

๐ŸŽฏ Prep Strategy:
Focus on updated resources (Tests 4-10, especially Test 7).
Skip Practice Tests 1-3 to ensure youโ€™re practicing with authentic and current materials.

Iโ€™m starting 2025 with drama, but one that needs to be addressed.

The things I highlighted in these pictures are borderline unethical. Some might these are just carefully chosen words (and not lies) because this person shares the applications of other people, but this is essentially called manipulating your not-very-informed audience into purchasing your services (which are more expensive than services from people who actually got into prestigious universities and helped others get in too)

Iโ€™m not posting any names, since the bigger purpose behind this post isnโ€™t to target a specific person, but to call people who are purchasing online services to do a little bit of market research. When it comes to college applications, check if the entity providing the service has had any success cases. Look for tangible evidence, not word-vomit in posts and descriptions.

Be aware of info-gurus, and stay safe.

HERE YOU GO

๐ŸŽ“Welcome to the Vocabook by @satashkent.

Since the introduction of the SAT, many projects have been created for students to learn vocabulary, including College Panda's 400 words, Ivy Global, Advanced Package, and many more. However, students often struggle with choosing which words to learn, and they find it hard to learn vocabulary because of the complex definitions.

Our students always ask, โ€œWhat is the best way to learn vocabulary?โ€ While everyone has a different pace, structure, and way of learning vocabulary, one thing is true for all learnersโ€”it's not just about learning the words but applying them in the language, whether in Reading, Writing, or Speaking. Aware of this problem, we have created the ULTIMATE VOCABULARY BOOK for all SAT learners. We put hours into creating this project, and it will help you learn vocabulary in the most efficient way.

The current edition of this book is the FIRST edition. We understand and are open to the possibility that we may have made mistakes. The good news is that we can fix those mistakes! If you encounter any errors, please contact @satashkent_admin through Telegram Messenger.

๐ŸŽฏThis edition contains words from the following books: College Panda 400 Words, Ivy Global 500 Words, Advanced Package, and SATashkent 8.0 Words (also known as Real Past Exam Words).

Don't study for the SAT unless you know why you need it!

If you don't like reading -> then watch it

As prospective students approach us seeking guidance on SAT courses, we initiate the conversation with fundamental questions. Surprisingly, many falter in providing answers, often driven by the misconception that the SAT alone secures admission to universities in the USA. .

When asked about the school they are applying to, the required SAT score, or their parents' readiness to invest in university tuition, a significant number of students draw a blank. It's essential to debunk the myth that merely taking the SAT guarantees admission to a U.S. university. The SAT is a tool for assessment, not a golden ticket.

Realities of Studying in the USA

There are three main categories of students who often find success in this endeavor:

1. Ultra Geniuses: Exceptional individuals who secure full ride or tuition scholarships from top schools.
2. Ultra Rich: Students whose parents can afford the significant financial investment required for U.S. education.[ at least $10k per year]
3. Ultra Lucky: A rare category where individuals win the elusive EYUF (with less than a 1% chance).

No Room for Misconceptions: There is No 4th Type

It's crucial to understand that there is no fourth type of student guaranteed admission solely through SAT scores. The process is more nuanced, and success demands a combination of factors beyond standardized testing.

Exploring Alternatives: Opportunities in Asian Universities

While the path to U.S. universities may be challenging for some, there exists a broader array of opportunities in Asian universities. In upcoming posts, we will delve into the diverse educational landscape in Asia, offering viable alternatives and expanding horizons beyond the singular focus on U.S. institutions.

๐Ÿค–How to use AI and machine modules effectively on College Application?

We know that AI has taken extensive place on our thinking and actionable processes. Fittingly, AI would include its immersion to the College application too.

Rather than avoiding the problem as many suggest, why not to learn how to use AI in our college applications!

Therefore, here are some tips on using it:

1. Brainstorm Like a Boss:
- Use AI to cook up some wild ideas, but remember, your essay is not a sci-fi novel. Keep it real

2. Don't rely on it fully:
- Don't rely on ChatGPT alone. It's like eating "melon"๐Ÿˆ with waterโ€”doable but not recommended. Get feedback from friends, family, even your pet. The more, the merrier!

3. Use it to dig down deeper on essays.
- AI tools such as GPT can objectively give feedback to your essays and discuss the ideation behind it. So, ask questions and try to analyze your own thinking process.

Here are list of AI tools for your better education:

1. Quillbot
2. Otter.ai
3. Knowji
4. OpenAI
5. Brainly

Enjoy them!

College Board has recently updated its questions bank on SAT Question Bank

Moreover, College Board segmented questions into state-standards, which unlikely affects question set for international students.

Q: Is it a good idea to take AP or A level exams after SAT and IELTS? I ma in 10th grade

A: Absolutely, achieving a score of 1500+ on the SAT is impressive, but it has become somewhat common among top-tier applicants. Adding AP or A-Level exams to your credentials could indeed be a game changer. Excelling in these rigorous courses not only demonstrates your academic prowess in specific subjects but also sets you apart in a pool of high achievers. This approach could significantly enhance your college applications by showing your capability to excel in advanced coursework.

Get Ready for Your MBA: Must follow Tips for Undergrad Students by Duke Fuqua'25 Student Sherzod Azamov

Academics:
- Maintain a strong GPA: Aim for a GPA above 3.5;
- Take quantitative courses like finance, economics, or statistics.

Many top programs value academic rigor! Only 17% of Harvard MBA Class of 2026 have undergrad's in Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences; the rest is either STEM or Business/Economics;

Extracurriculars:
- Leadership roles: Seek out leadership positions in clubs, organizations, or volunteer work.

- Pursue internships, research projects, or study abroad opportunities that align with your career goals and showcase your skills and interests.

โ—๏ธAvoid things that everyone can do: try to pursue unique experiences.

GMAT/GRE:

Begin preparing for the GMAT/GRE; Once you start working, you will hardly have time to commit to test prep; even if you do have time, you will be out of shape and require more time/effort to grasp concepts than you would during your academic prime.

My SAT Preparation Journey & Tips for Future Test Takers! by Shaxlo Esanbayeva. [1550 at first shot]

To be honest, I never planned on taking SAT prep courses because I believed I could handle the preparation independently. However, I quickly realized the importance of identifying effective resources and experienced a lack of progress in the Reading section, despite my best efforts.

On a friend's recommendation, I joined SATashkent, where I met two incredible mentors, Mr. Suxrob and Mr. Asadbek. They pinpointed my weaknesses and shared invaluable insights and resources, turning the daunting prep process into an enjoyable and fruitful journey. Not only were their lessons enriching, but each day was filled with laughter, thanks to the wonderful Fusion community members! โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ“š Educational Tips for Achieving Your Dream SAT Score ๐Ÿ“š

Understand Your Pace: Everyone learns differently; some might reach their target score in a month, others might need more time. Stay focused on your progress, and maintain discipline and patience.

Reading Strategies:

Expand Your Vocabulary: Don't just rely on typical SAT words. Read books, especially those by 19th-century authors, to get accustomed to their writing style and enrich your vocabulary.

Enhance Critical Thinking: When reading, consider the text's purpose, how sentences connect, relationships between paragraphs, and used transitions. Before my SAT preparation, I read extensively while prepping for IELTS, which helped me score a 9 in Reading and a 760 on the SAT Reading section.

๐ŸŒŸ With the right guidance, resources, and determination, you can achieve your SAT goals too!

Good luck to all future test takers! ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ€

The Most Asked Question: How to Choose the Right School for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Understanding Entrepreneurship: Remember, true entrepreneurship isnโ€™t just taught in classrooms. While formal education can provide tools and frameworks, the essence of entrepreneurshipโ€”innovation, risk-taking, and resilienceโ€”is often learned through real-world experience.

Location Matters! Consider studying in a bustling metropolis where the entrepreneurial spirit thrives. Big cities offer vibrant business activities and networking events, providing an invaluable runway to launch your ideas.

Networking Opportunities: Cities are melting pots of professionals and industries. Use this to your advantage by attending frequent networking events, seminars, and workshops where you can connect with potential mentors, investors, and partners.

Resource Access: Urban centers are hubs for entrepreneurial resources. From accelerators and incubators to a plethora of venture capital - the city has it all to help transform your startup dreams into reality.

Diverse Talent: Metropolises attract individuals from diverse backgrounds, providing a rich talent pool from which to form your dream team. This diversity fosters creativity and innovation, crucial for a startup's success.

Large Market: A bigger city means a larger market with more varied consumer needs. It's an ideal testing ground for your products and a scalable customer base.

Inspiration and Motivation: Thereโ€™s something about the city's energy that fuels ambition. Being surrounded by fellow entrepreneurs and thriving businesses can motivate you and provide real-world lessons that are invaluable.
