I am starting one of my new groups tomorrow, and one thing I will definitely have each student do is create a spreadsheet to track their progress.

For example, I recently came across someone who set a goal of immersing in French for 1,500 hours. They track their daily hours of study and monitor how close they are to achieving their goal. This is a great example of a measurable system.

For the average learner, it typically takes around 300 hours to progress from one language proficiency level to the next. Having a system to measure your hours is crucial for staying on track and motivated.

I emphasize this again: make sure to create something that is measurable.

So what's next for the zoologist - perhaps a full-size Tyrannosaurus rex? 'No, he tells me: 'We're desperate to build really big pterosaurs. I'm talking creatures with even greater wingspans, weighing a quarter of a ton. But,' he adds, just as one begins to fear for the safety and stress levels of pilots landing nearby at Cambridge City Airport, 'it's more likely we'll start off with one of the smaller, flapping pterosaurs.' This is certainly more reassuring. Let's hope he is content to leave it at that.

🔤 What does 'it' in the last sentence refer to?

A the information the tests have revealed
B Wilkinson's sense of achievement
C Wilkinson's desire to build models
D the comparison between types of models

One hallmark of a high-level candidate is their ability to use common words in less common ways, such as understanding and applying their less familiar meanings or parts of speech. For example, while most candidates are familiar with the adjective “appropriate,” few know or use it correctly as a verb.

Pay attention to how the author used “elect” in its less common sense and “cave” as a less common part of speech.

Do you know the meanings of these words in this context?

Are all jobs of equal importance?

Hmm, to be brutally honest, no... I mean doctors, nurses, firefigthers, and people like that are easily more important than, say, PE teachers or a gardener who are a dime a dozen. And I don't think people should take it the wrong way. Like, of course, PE teachers and gardeners do great things, but surely we can't put them on the same level as the others I mentioned. And I'd also add that maybe it depends on the supply and demand. Like, if a town or city is oversaturated with police officers and has no accountants, it's fair to say that the accountant should be deemed as more important.

What kind of jobs require the most patience?

Oh, there's no doubt in my mind that any type of teaching role requires the most patience. Imagine being a preschool teacher with kids running wild and constantly needing attention. I don't know how they handle it. As well, special needs teachers and helpers must have the patience of a saint. They have to constantly attend to the needs of others with understanding and positivity. One job which really tries people's patteince is working in the customer service department of a call centre. I know from experience that this job takes a toll on you. It's so monotonous and uneventful that you start to play games with your colleagues to help the time go by.

More importantly, a universal language can foster a sense of global unity and understanding, promoting tolerance. This is because individuals from different nations and cultures could engage in dialogue more effortlessly, breaking down the walls of misunderstanding that often arise from language barriers. This then can create a stronger sense of global citizenship, where people see themselves as part of a larger, interconnected community, which can lead to greater empathy and solidarity across borders.

I used to pay a former exmainer write sample answers for some of the original questions I got hold of. here is what he had to say about this horrible table.

Do you know the examiners have to select all the key features themselves? it is not like a senior examiner gives them a sample answer or an answer with key features selected for them

Let me know if you want to see his sample answer for this one

You just need a little bit of flexibility and logic to use the sentences you notice in the articles of reputable publications.

For example, look at this essay question:

Today, TV channels provide men’s sport shows more than women’s sports shows.

Why? Should TV channels give equal time for women’s sport and men’s sport?’

Sports, once the preserve of men, are now played by women as well. However, men’s sports still receive significantly more airtime. There are several reasons for this discrepancy, but I believe that broadcasting women’s sports equally would be a positive step forward.

You see?

THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF

Many teachers might raise their eyebrows when I say it is acceptable to teach certain phrases for students to memorize. However, this approach comes with the caveat that such phrases should be carefully selected, and students must use them flexibly. One effective phrase that students can use to begin their IELTS Task 2 essays is "There is no shortage of ...", which means "there is plenty of something".

Look at the following examples:

There is no shortage of studies on green jobs that support this optimistic view.
There is no shortage of theories about why companies aren't adding jobs faster.
There is no shortage of books that explain the story behind every Beatles song.
There is no shortage of evidence that lifelong exercise is good for the brain.
When it comes to choosing who to promote, there is no shortage of advice out there.

Now, let’s apply this to an IELTS essay question ⬇️

Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar. Do you agree or disagree?

You could start your essay with the phrase:

"There is no shortage of studies showing a link between excessive sugar intake and health issues, leading to the view that sugar-laden products should be made more expensive."

If humans were truly at home under the light of the moon and stars, we would go into darkness happily, the midnight world as visible to us as it is to the vast number of nocturnal species on this planet. Instead, we are diurnal creatures, with eyes adapted to living in the sun’s light. This is a basic evolutionary fact, even though most of us don’t think of ourselves as diurnal beings any more than we think of ourselves as primates or mammals, or Earthlings. Yet it’s the only way to explain what we’ve done to the night: We’ve engineered it to receive us by filling it with light.

Choose the most suitable heading for the paragraph above.

i a reason that contributes to light pollution.
ii a city has lessened light pollution successfully.
iii the importance of darkness.
iv the popularity of light pollution in the world.
v methods to reduce light pollution.
vi the reason why we have changed the night.

1️⃣5️⃣ Counting words and writing the word count next to every line is a waste of time

In every mock test, there’s always at least one candidate whose answer sheet is filled with numbers—not from the chart, but for the word count. This habit likely stems from confusion about IELTS requirements, as many may not know that the penalty for word count was actually abolished back in 2018. So, if your essay has around 248 words, it’s completely acceptable—as long as it’s well-developed. Writing significantly fewer words, however, usually means ideas haven’t been fully developed. Instead of focusing on counting each word, prioritize completing a fully structured and clear essay.

1️⃣6️⃣ The US, the UK, the Netherlands – remember to use a definite article

When writing about certain country names, such as “the United States,” “the United Kingdom,” or “the Netherlands,” always include “the” as a definite article. Similarly, terms like “the government” and “the internet” also require the article “the.”

1️⃣2️⃣ The trend for, The index of, The indicator

None of these phrases accurately denote a number experiencing change. If there’s one universal term, it would be “the figure for.” Everything else is either misleading or incorrect.

“Trend” implies a change over time, so writing “the trend for X increased” is nonsensical.

1️⃣3️⃣ Units are measured in ________.

This phrase is generally unnecessary unless absolutely required. Some students even write “Units are measured in percentages,” which isn’t needed. If the unit is too lengthy to write each time, mentioning it once can save time; otherwise, it’s best left out.

1️⃣4⃣️️️️️️ Avoid Using Fake Research Findings

Yesterday, when Jo’rabek, the team, and I were reviewing essays, we noticed a candidate had written, “Recent research shows that people who dislike extreme sports are parents.” Not only was this unsupported by logic, but it also did nothing to strengthen their argument.

Your daughter wants to study English at a language school in the town of Weymouth next year.
Write a letter to the school. In your letter

● ask for information about the courses
● explain that your daughter is interested in social events
● find out what accommodation is available

Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing to enquire about the English courses offered at your school as I am hoping / planning to send my daughter Mary to England for a month this summer.

I would be grateful if you could forward me the details of levels, times and costs of the courses you offer. If possible, I would like Mary to study for at least 3 hours a day and be in a class of mixed nationalities. Also, I was wondering if the school organises social activities? I am sure that Mary
would benefit from exploring the city and getting to know the other students.

Finally, would it be possible to send me information about the accommodation you have available? Ideally, I would like Mary to stay with a host family so that she can practise her English. I understand that these spaces are usually limited, but I feel very strongly that this should be part of her study experience.

I look forward to hearing from you soon, and thank you in advance for your help,

Yours faithfully,
Bob Masters

1️⃣ There is no any

This is one of the most common mistakes I hear students make. They say something along the lines of "There is no any food left", but this is incorrect. There are two ways to correct it:
1 There is no food left
2 There is not any food left.

2️⃣ go to somewhere

Words like ‘somewhere,’ ‘anywhere,’ and ‘everywhere’ do not need a preposition when used with verbs like ‘go’ or ‘come.’ These words act as adverbs of place, indicating where the action is happening. For example, we say ‘go somewhere’ or ‘come anywhere,’ without adding a preposition.

3️⃣ hotel

This is one of those words candidates pronounce with an Uzbek "O". The correct pronunciation is /hoʊˈtel/

4️⃣ advices

Advice is one of the uncountable nouns that even native speakers sometimes mistakenly use in the plural. More such words are feedback, access, information, homework, equipment and furniture.

If there are around 50 reports, that is about 200 minutes. But it is rewarding to see a student apply the things they learned in the lesson (notice the sentences where she did a good job). Most students keep doing the same things you learnt before from elsewhere.

1️⃣1️⃣ such as lighthouse, school and so on. I saw this in one of the students' reports.

We have believed that work builds character (punctuality, initiative, honesty, self-discipline, and so forth )

Well, I’d just simply recommend against using any alternative, and instead tell you to simply end the list with the last item.

We have believed that work builds character (punctuality, initiative, honesty, and self-discipline).

Or simply think of an umbrella term and write “and similar + umbrella term” ⤵️

We have believed that work builds character (punctuality, initiative, honesty, self-discipline and similar traits).

If you really want to say that these are not all the things you want to list, then you can use the word “and the like” or “to name a few/two/some etc,).

We have believed that work builds character (punctuality, initiative, honesty, self-discipline and the like)

We have believed that work builds positive character traits, such as punctuality, initiative, honesty, and self-discipline, to name a few.

5️⃣ access is always uncountable , thus an access.

I saw more than one candidate write "There was an access".

6️⃣ "The picture" or "The image illustrates"

I don't think it is the most fitting word. Just say "The plans" or "The maps", not "the picture"

7️⃣ In today's fast-paced world,
In a contemporary society,

These were the opening phrases for the essays of two relatively srong candidates. They used these phrases only for their next sentence to be completely unrelated to this opening phrase. Usuaully, these are never correct, so don't use them.

8️⃣ The given/supplied map

Well, you are writing a report for the map because it is given. It is a very awkward start. Don't use these words before the names of any chart. Just start with "The" and the name of the graph "The bar chart"

9️⃣ witness dramatic changes

For maps, always go for "undergo changes"

🔟 overspan, timeframe

These are bad alternatives to "from .... to ...." or "between .... and....". It is much better to say "between 1990 and 2021" than to say "over a span of 31 years"

📝 FEEDBACK = CORRECTIONS + SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

The first picture is an example with good feedback.

So you might take 100 courses by actual former examiners that teach you how to write essays, but if you actually don't write yourself and get feedback, I don't think you writing improves tangibly

Today, as part of the reading explanation for the marathon passage, I explained why students need to remember that every passage has two writers: original writer - the author who wrote the piece for whatever publication - and the exam writer who edited, made changes, and created the questions.

It is important to keep in mind that the original writer's goal was to communicate a certain messaage - the ultimate objective of any writer, so once you find the main idea, finding answers to the questions, created by the exam writer, will be much easier.

2 department stores

You need a specific type of shop not a broder term for one. Thus, the correct answer is department stores, not retail outlets.

#COMMONMISTAKESINMOCKWRITING

1️⃣ Task 1 was about losing hearing ability, and most people wrote "loose hearing". Lose and loose have different meanings.

lose (v) - be deprived of or cease to have or retain (something).
I've lost my appetite
loose (adj) - (of a garment) not fitting tightly or closely.
she slipped into a loose T-shirt

2️⃣ The best word to show the start of an overview paragraph is Overall or In general.

Most candidates go for overly lengthy options such as "From an overall perspective, it can be readily seen that.." or "what stands out from the graph is that". Neither of these adds any substance to your overview. My suggestion is to simply start with "Overall" and write the first key feature - the most general one, if possible.

3️⃣ Another common mistake relates to the selection of the verb in the introduction. I am sure your examiner doesn't care much for the introduction, so there is no point in trying to impress or show off here. So words like "elaborate" or "dilienate" or "demonstrate" are not any better than "show" or "compare". So please stick to normal words.

4️⃣ The next problem also relates to the obsession with overparaphrasing. Candidates want to start each sentence with some sort of cohesive device, sometimes so much so that they want to come up with harder alternatives to fixed bridging words like "To begin with" and write "To commence with", which makes no sense. Some candidates even wrote "By way of an example" instead of "For example". These "harder" alternatives are doing more harm than good.

P.S. The list can be longer, but I have a place to go. Wait for the post about the common mistakes made in the reports/essays written by candidates who took the mock test today at our center.
