We are excited to announce that CoL will be taking part in the 9th Annual National Moot Court Competition, organized by Mizan-Tepi University, in collaboration with Federal Justice and Law Institute to be held from May 1 to May 3, 2017 E.C at Mizan-Tepi University.

Hence, all interested 3rd and 4th year students are encouraged to apply.

- If you are interested, please register with the CoL Secretary until Thursday February 20, 2025.

- Since the oral round of this competition is conducted in Amharic, good Amharic speaking skill is necessary.

A massive congratulations to Haramaya University College of Law for emerging as the 2025 National Champion of the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition.

In determining the national champion, the results of both oral pleadings and written memorials were assessed cumulatively. Haramaya University secured the championship based on the combined result of their oral and memorial submissions.

This victory secures Haramaya University’s place on the international stage as they prepare to represent Ethiopia at the 2025 Jessup International Rounds in Washington, D.C., USA.

Annual International Refugee Law Student Writing Competition

The American Society of International Law's International Refugee Law Interest Group (IRLIG) is pleased to announce the tenth annual International Refugee Law Student Writing Competition, co-sponsored by:

American Society of International Law (ASIL);

Global Migration Centre, ASIL Academic Partner Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies;

Eligibility and Requirements

Papers may address any topic related to international law and refugees, stateless persons, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and/or forced displacement.

Particular consideration will be given to papers authored by people who have experienced forced displacement and to student scholars in the global south.

Student authors must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited university at the time of submission.

Papers must be written solely by the candidate, in English, and may not have been submitted for publication elsewhere.

Submissions may range from 7,000 to 12,000 words, including footnotes.

Each candidate is limited to a single submission.

Candidates should only resubmit previously unsuccessful submissions following substantial revision.

Deadline and Method of Submission

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time, 15 February 2025.

Articles should be submitted to [email protected] as Microsoft Word attachments. Questions should be directed to the same address.

By submitting papers, candidates represent that they fulfill the eligibility requirements of the Competition. The organizers may request formal proof of eligibility.

Competition Procedures and Selection
The administrator will detach the first page, and each submitter will be assigned a number. Reviewers will refer only to those numbers in their communications.

Award and Announcement

The winner of the International Refugee Law Student Writing Competition will receive complimentary admission to the 2025 ASIL Annual Meeting, to be held in Washington, DC, from April 16-18, 2025; a complimentary one-year student membership provided by ASIL; and a £300 book credit with Oxford University Press.

If the winner subsequently chooses to submit the paper to the International Journal of Refugee Law, it will be promptly reviewed by the Editorial Board and independent reviewers. If deemed suitable for publication, the Board will work with the winner with a view to bringing the paper forward to publication.

The award will be formally presented at the 2025 ASIL Annual Meeting.

To enable the winner to attend the ASIL Annual Meeting, the Global Migration Centre at ASIL Academic Partner Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies Geneva will contribute up to 400 Swiss francs toward travel expenses.

In association with our partners at the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) and the GQUAL campaign, ILSA is pleased to announce a networking webinar entitled “Empowering Women in International Law.” This webinar will bring together top women jurists and legal professionals from around the world to discuss opportunities in international law.  It will feature a keynote panel, followed by three 25-minute “breakout sessions” where small groups of attendees will meet in a smaller setting with professionals to get answers to their questions about their future international legal careers.

As many of you have heard, last week we tragically lost our fellow student, Biruke, who graduated in accounting last year. She was fatally stabbed seven times by her friend.

Unfortunately, incidents like this are becoming more frequent in Ethiopia, though they are only now gaining significant media attention. This is not a new issue, but its growing visibility calls for urgent action, from the government to each one of us.

Even though this tragic incident didn’t happen on our campus, as HU community, it is our responsibility to protect one another and speak up for each other. We must all condemn any form of violence or abuse against women and children, regardless of the circumstances. We should all refuse to stay silent in the face of violence.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of our friend Biruke, and I hope we can come together to prevent further tragedies.
