🌍Journal Entry: Peace vs. Justice: A Deep Dive 🌍
🗓️ Date: December 22, 2024

📚 Event: Hawassa University Law Students Association: Events Team

The Team recently hosted a lively discussion exploring the age-old dilemma: Peace vs. Justice. In the aftermath of conflict, societies face the agonizing choice of prioritizing healing or accountability.

🔍 Key Arguments:

⚖️ Prioritizing Justice ⚖️

* Accountability is Non-Negotiable: Impunity for serious crimes is simply unacceptable. Victims deserve justice, and accountability is essential for true reconciliation.

* A Deterrent to Future Crimes: Allowing perpetrators to escape justice sends a dangerous message. It signals that such crimes are acceptable, increasing the risk of future violence.

✌️ Prioritizing Peace ✌️

* Healing is Paramount: Focusing solely on justice can deepen societal rifts. Lengthy trials and harsh punishments may hinder the healing process.

* Reconciliation is Key: Prioritizing reconciliation, perhaps through amnesty and restorative justice, can foster national unity and prevent future atrocities.

Diverse Perspectives:

* Mr. A: "Let's be real, if we go all-in on justice, there's bound to be some hurt feelings. I think we should prioritize peace, let God be the judge, and let the government focus on building a more peaceful society. Peace gives us hope for a better future."

* Mr. B: "Peace has been around forever, right? Justice is a newer concept. It makes sense to me that peace should come first."

* Mr. C: "Peace without fixing the root problems? That's like building a house on quicksand – it's not gonna last. We need to address the core issues, and that means holding people accountable. Justice needs to come first."

* Mr. D: "Ideally, we'd have both, but if we have to choose, I'm team justice. It's the right thing to do."

* Mr. E: "It's not just about choosing peace or justice; it's about how we go about it. Both are good in theory, but the government needs to implement them effectively. The methods we use really matter."

* Mr. F: "Justice sometimes feels like just a way to make people feel better in the short term, like revenge. In Ethiopia, it's often just for show. We need to focus on preventing crime in the first place, not just punishing people after the fact."

* Mr. G: "I don't see peace and justice as opposites. A truly just society is more likely to be peaceful. And to achieve justice, you need some level of peace to begin with."

💬 Moving Forward:

The discussion highlighted the complexity of this crucial issue. There is no easy answer, and the most appropriate approach may vary depending on the specific context and circumstances.

Let's continue to advocate for change, peace, and justice! 💪

🌍 Journal Entry: Discussion on Marital Rape
🗓️ Date: December 8, 2024

📚 Event: Hawassa University Law Students Association
: Events Team

The team hosted a significant discussion on the complex issue of marital rape. The conversation explored the intersection of societal norms, human rights, and legal frameworks within the Ethiopian context.

🔍 Key Areas of Discussion:

1. Defining Marital Rape:

A central point of contention was the definition of marital rape itself. Participants debated whether implied consent exists within marriage and whether the absence of consent constitutes rape, regardless of marital status.

2. Arguments Against Criminalization:

Focus on Private Resolution: Some participants argued that marital rape should be treated as a private matter best resolved within the family or through civil means.

Impact on Family Structures: Concerns were voiced about potential disruptions to family stability and societal repercussions.

Cultural and Religious Considerations: The discussion acknowledged the significant influence of deeply ingrained cultural and religious values in Ethiopian society on perceptions of marital rape.

Evidence and Due Process: Participants raised concerns about the challenges of gathering evidence in marital rape cases, emphasizing the need for due process to prevent false accusations.

3. Arguments in Favor of Criminalization:

Human Rights and Bodily Autonomy: Advocates emphasized the fundamental human right to bodily autonomy and the necessity of consent for any sexual activity, including within marriage.

Legal Reform: There was a strong call for revising the current legal definition of rape, which excludes acts occurring within marriage.

Protection for Victims: Supporters argued that criminalization is essential for providing legal recourse and protection for victims of marital rape.

Societal Impact: While acknowledging potential challenges, proponents asserted that criminalizing marital rape could foster a societal shift towards greater respect for women's rights and a reduction in domestic violence.

4. Scope and Limitations of Criminalization:
The discussion also addressed the need for clearly defining the parameters of marital rape, considering factors such as physical harm and clear evidence of non-consent.

💬 Conclusion
:
The discussion on marital rape highlighted the multifaceted and deeply rooted nature of this issue. It underscored the need for ongoing dialogue, critical examination of existing laws, and a commitment to protecting the human rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their marital status.

Let's continue to advocate for change and raise awareness! 💪

Get Together, ባህል vs ህግ
