Meanwhile, there was another of Martin's favourites in the previous message. Did you notice it?

Thank you my lord, the wine is very choice. (c)

Martin loves 'coice' as an adjective. Was first thinking that it's obsolete, then took effort to google and found out that it was revived in 2000 as a synonym for 'pretty/nice'.

As a person whose Russian is not typical and (pray) vivid, I could use that! You?

So, you can say that:
-your friend picked a choice spot for a picnic
-your little brother always gets the choicest cut of meat when it comes to steak
-that blogger has a choice sense of humor
-you wouldn't have bought it if it weren't choice vintage clothing
-your husband refused to pay for the choice suite with a sea view
-you wanted a choice role in the upcoming play staged, but didn't get through casting

Any of this is true? If not, then what choice do you have but to come up with your own fact about you?

How to Work with Wordlists

The WLs on the levels B2+ - C2 are voluminous.

When a teacher composes a WL for you (just like I do in my tracks—I know this firsthand), they do not want to deprive students of the nice phrases that abound in qualitative sources (live podcasts, The Guardian, books).

Learning all the phrases by heart (whether there are 35 or 80 in a wordlist) is nearly impossible.

So, here are the essentials of working with vocab at higher levels once you have your selected portion = a Wordlist (I can share tips on how to create a WL on your own later if you're interested).

➡️First, copy the WL somewhere you can edit it and enjoy the satisfaction of watching your collection grow.
➡️Then, skim through the phrases on the topic, reflecting on your own experiences in relation to it and the possible situations surrounding it.
➡️Scan the WL for 5-7 expressions which you will trigger with the topic. This means that when asked to write or speak about Topic X yourself, you will remember them and use them naturally in your answer / text.
These expressions you cherry-pick are best to be neutral collocations (meaning, applicable to many situations; using them is my technique to activate the vocabulary on the topic and tackle the WLs efficiently through prioritization).

How can we check that an expression is neutral?
✔️ You could open any set of questions on the topic (e.g. here you'll find collections of questions on various topics: 🔗https://esldiscussions.com/) and see if you can use the phrase in the asnwers more often than not.
✔️You could watch this part of my lesson in which we learn to tell apart the neutral and specific collocations: 🔗https://disk.yandex.ru/i/WnmWbqWKCRsgfQ

Good luck with your tasty - and, as to 5-7 expressions per a WL, neutral - vocabulary!🧡

In the statements below you'll find two examples of using this phrase. Read the sentences and respond to one of the questions (or both) in comments!

1 Being set in your ways means the loss of so many new experiences. This phenomenon is showing up at ridiculously younger ages. (@ The Irish Times) Do you agree that young people can be set in their ways too?

2 We like what we know, no question. But you know what the scariest thing in life is? The thing in life that frightens us the most? Change. I think most people are set in their ways. I know I need change to come along and kick me in the ass to get me moving. (@ Internship) And what about you? Are you set in your ways or do you welcome change in any form?
