WebSockets are ideal, even when using a pub/sub model scaling web socket is a headache ( might be skill issue ). However, using HTTP polling can sometimes be a better alternative. In fact, many WebSocket use cases can be replaced by HTTP polling, which is quite interesting. Personally, I hate seeing my VPS server's CPU working at 100% 🤦♂️.

I've built a simple anonymous secret-sharing app using Better Call and Next.js. I have to attend work now, but I'll share the project tomorrow. This was just for testing Better Call, it's incredibly easy to write, offers amazing type safety, and includes a fully typed RPC client also 🔥

As a starting step, we could organize a monthly session like Mella, where the focus is purely on technical stuff, appreciating the tech behind everything. We could ask @alxethiopiaofficial for a space and host it once a month on weekends, maybe for 2-3 hours in the evening. No fluff, just technical deep dives. The goal isn’t networking or a typical meetup, it’s about learning new tech, appreciating dev culture beyond the online world, and making meetups easy and accessible. No refreshments, no merch,No sponsors just keeping everything super simple. It could even be coding sessions or tech talks. AGAIN, NOT A MEETUP, IT'S A SUPER TECHNICAL EVENT. SIMPLE TO THE CORE. No preparation needed, just show up, attend, and head home afterward. and @codenight can make the new podcast comeback like this

Man, sometimes I feel like the Ethiopian startup scene is just stuck in this endless loop of pitching, raising money, and doing it all over again, without much of that engineering fun, you know? It’s like the focus is more on playing the bureaucratic game to secure the next round of funding rather than building something truly innovative or technically exciting. Don’t get me wrong, there are companies with cool engineering behind them, like Gebeta Maps, Teraki, and a few others, that could totally scale and sell to markets outside Ethiopia. And yeah, building for the international market is 100% an option, especially since technology is democratizing resources like never before

Why don’t we (here in Ethiopia) have a legit dating app? Forget those Tinder clones, our culture isn’t the same as the West. Or maybe it just won’t work here at all? But honestly, this feels like the perfect time for it. Internet access is everywhere now, and it’s way cheaper than it was 3-5 years ago. People are more aware and ready for good UX, they’d adapt in no time (just look at how TikTok blew up here). It doesn’t even have to be just a web or mobile app. But I feel like if we don’t figure this out, the next generation will still be stuck with the same problem. So, what do you think? 😁

If you're starting your personal channel or just got started, let me tell you something—you don’t need 10,000 people to write about what you like, what you do, or whatever’s on your mind. This is a blog, not some viral content factory. Whether you have 1,000 followers or 10, it really doesn’t matter.
Just be yourself and write. No need to drop your channel in every group chat.
And if you're thinking about monetization, come up with a better plan. From my experience, it’s way better when people find your channel organically instead of you spamming every chat.

So, I’ve been learning Flutter and building this AI-powered note-taking app. The idea is that you can write notes with your voice and choose a style on what should your note turn in to, like a professional email, academic essay, social media script, and more. The AI will then rewrite it for you, but you can always keep the original if you don’t want the AI feature. I’m about 90% done now!

Starting the day, and here’s what’s on my VSCode tracker. I was using Nvim earlier, so it only shows 28 minutes for Dart. Thanks to Tele, we couldn’t download the model. But I noticed something weird—whenever I start downloading the model using Ollama, the internet just dies, not just for me but for everyone in the house, PCs, phones, everything. 😁
I tested it like 3-4 times, and every single time, everyone in the house started complaining about the internet. The moment I stopped the download, they’d be like, ‘Yup, it’s back.’
Am I missing something here, or is this just how it works? 😁

I’m using Turborepo to build this project, and I’m keeping the backend server separate from the WebSocket server. Instead of using Socket.io, I’m going with WebSockets library ( ws ) . This way, my HTTP backend handles authentication and all the non-real-time stuff, while the WebSocket server takes care of anything that needs to happen in real-time.
For the database, I’m using PostgreSQL with Prisma as the ORM. The app will let users create study rooms where they can join and mess around with an Excalidraw-like interface (basically a collaborative whiteboard).

So now OpenAI is trying to make our DeepSeek experience the worst by DDoSing DeepSeek servers, huh? 🤔 I mean, I can't say they wouldn't do this, especially since the market is falling them. In the meantime, I'm gonna try running DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen locally (the 7B version). It's around 4.7GB, so my PC is going to have a hard time handling it 😁. This is just for experiment, I’m not planning to use it on a regular basis or anything like that. 😁

I can't stand my laptop screen . it has this weird layer, like a plastic film or sth, and the colors are way off. It looks so strange, especially when I'm designing or coding. The difference is huge when I send my work to someone else. it doesn’t even come close to how it should look. Might be time to get a monitor or change this one.

Hi everyone I have been discussing to organize dev meetup version 3 with the organizers, who is up for it? 😁
so looking back our last event, it was really amazing and I hope everyone had a great time what really made it special was the hard work of all the organizers, especially in managing sponsorships and we are happy the outcome was great.
but this time we all are quite busy and tbh, since we hassled too much last time we’re hoping to avoid handling sponsorships ourselves this time, we all have a lot on our plate
so me and other organizers are thinking to make it a half day event, but if there is anyone here who would like to sponsor or can help secure sponsorships to make the event happen we’d love to have you so feel free to comment here, we might also need some volunteers if it is even a half day event so let us know here

They don’t know the difference between an MVP and real production quality, and they rely on tools like Firebase or Vercel without realizing how easily they could spike up charges from silly mistakes.

First off, thanks for differentiating between having a degree and actually pursuing something to learn and grow. My real problem with education (and I’ve said this a thousand times, and I’ll say it again) is that it takes the fun out of failing.
How on earth are we supposed to evolve as a society when we’re stuck in a system that not only discourages failure but actively punishes it for not following the same old ways?
The main reason this whole 'skip school and get rich' mindset is trending these days is because society measures success by money (which is honestly sad). Let’s be real: education has become the last thing people think of when it comes to making money.
The solution? Change the whole 'education for money' narrative. Start teaching kids for the sake of knowledge, creativity, and a better future. Give them a mission—like making humans an interstellar species. Inspire them! Tell them if they become doctors, they could cure diseases like cancer, instead of just promising them a paycheck.
Because let’s face it, the numbers don’t lie. (If you don’t believe me, go check the net worth of some TikTokers here in Ethiopia 😁… for what?) Let’s stop fooling this generation into thinking school is all about making tons of money. (Not saying you can’t, but that shouldn’t be the point.)
My point is: money should be a by-product of knowledge. If not, we’re in big trouble as a society. We’ll end up with geniuses who are broke and (sorry to say this) dumb people with a camera on TikTok, spending their days insulting others while sitting in houses full of money. To me, that’s an apocalypse.

And my Secret Santa was @mr_naty… let me tell you, this dude gave me one hell of an experience! 😁👌. It all started with an app he developed specifically for the game. When I opened it, the app showed me a map and prompted me to go to a specific location. Following the map, I ended up at an Indian restaurant called Korak around Bole. And guess what? I got to try Indian food for the first time!
But that wasn’t it—after the meal, I had to open the app again and solve a series of puzzles. It was wild! I had to decode a Base64 string to find a word that served as my password to unlock the gift. Finally, I got my gift, which turned out to be: A 1-month gym membership (in cash), 30 eggs, 🥚 The source code of the app
Seriously, it was such a fun and creative experience. I loved every single part of it! And to top it all off, we even paid 2000 ETB for kita and Indian doro wot 😁🔥. Man, this was hands down the best Christmas experience ever!

Next.js makes writing client components feel like a crime sometimes 😁. My brain is constantly scheming, 'How can I turn this into a server component?'—even if it means wrapping the whole thing inside another component and adding unnecessary layers, just to make sure it’s a server component again (which it probably was in the first place).

It's been years since I checked this channel fr. Back in freshman year, 1st semester, I used to read vents all the time—then stopped. Today, a friend sent me one, and I decided to revisit it.

Been thinking a lot lately 😁... instant gratification seems to be the issue of our generation (and Gen Z + Gen Alpha too). What if we made life a bit less sweet or even bitter by adding some delayed gratification? Like a browser extension that adds a 10-second buffer before the suspenseful or hook part of a video.

Is it just me, or is everyone facing the same issue? I haven’t had this much trouble with Next.js in a long time.
With React 19, I constantly have to force installations for every package because of compatibility issues, not to mention the deployment problems. For now, I’m sticking with Next.js 14 and React 18.

People who think React Native is trash really need to see a doctor, fr 😁. Have you seen the new architecture yet? Or checked out Expo DOM? What about API routes on Expo? For a lot of us, it’s a skill issue that makes us think it’s not ready for production. i used to think that way. My advice for those of you still doubting—why not just try it? This is 2024, bruv. Do you actually delete data from the production database, or do you just add a column to mark data as deleted, check that column, and then show users that it’s deleted? (I mean, we all know this is what most companies do, but just in case you're not using it 😁 here’s a tip).

Back to where we started... let’s start with the bright side: it was awesome! Met a lot of new students, awesome guests, and worked with an amazing team. Super glad it happened, fr
Now, there were definitely issues—like the mic, time management, and the venue setup. Behind the scenes, it was the worst: God i hate beaurocracy. guests almost got blocked from entering, the banner and other stuff barely made it in. We only got full access to the venue around 7:30 when we expected it to be at 6:30 🤦♂️.
But hey, shoutout to everyone who’s breaking that Habesha time habit 😁. I was surprised to see so many students almost 60% showing up at 7:30 for an 8:00 event. That gave me huge hope for our future here .

Thank God I'm turning 21 today
🥳( so does my brother @natyiu0 😊 )! Man, what a ride! It’s wild, exciting, and kinda frustrating getting older. Like, I'm officially not a kid anymore—what? But honestly, I still feel like a kid inside most days. You blink, and suddenly you're like, 'Wait, when did I become an adult?' The years fly by, and life gets real, fast. But through it all, God’s been doing His thing—pulling me through, even when I had no clue what I was doing!
Now it’s time to step up, get out of that cozy family zone, and build my own path. With God backing me up, I’m ready to take it on. And yeah, I’m feeling like a wannabe poet today 😁 (I used to write, believe it or not).

Bruh, I seriously don’t get our Ethiopian fear of English compared to how chill Indians are with their accents! Like, they speak English confidently, accents and all. But if you check out any Ethiopian content on social media, and the creator dares to sprinkle in just a few English words, the comments are wild! People be like, 'English isn’t knowledge!' Like, who even said it was? 😂 Why is that always the comment? Truth is, we Ethiopians treat English like it’s some kind of horror movie, and let’s be real—that fear is too real! 😁

Bro, I've been watching a lot of Indian content lately. It's mostly coding, podcasts, and tech-related stuff. I used to have a wrong perception ( based on most of the stereotypes ) of Indians as scammers (even though they do exist), but now I feel like they're probably some of the most genius and intelligent people out there. I mean, you can't deny how incredible some of their work is. You see so many developers, designers, engineers, astronauts, videographers, and more—and it's really inspiring. So, let this post be my way of admitting I was wrong. We shouldn't let the scammers and negative people represent the smart, brilliant minds out there.
