Ethiopian Federal Police enhance DNA testing capacity

In the first six months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year, 169 DNA tests were conducted. The results were recorded by laboratories that were established and staffed with qualified professionals both domestically and abroad through training programs.

It is also noted that the ability to provide DNA testing services within the country has eliminated the need to send samples abroad, which was previously the case due to the lack of such facilities locally.

The Ethiopian Federal Police report that the capacity to conduct DNA testing has been developed, enabling the identification of individuals, verification of criminal cases such as rape, and resolution of disputes and family matters related to paternity.

Ethiopia and the Republic of Azerbaijan held their third political consultations led by State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mesganu Arga and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic Azerbaijan, Yalchin Rafiyev today in Addis Ababa.

Mesganu noted that the bilateral relations between the two countries is showing steady growth over recent years. He underscored that the current political consulation platform is serving as a key instrument in further enhancing the bilateral cooperation, facilitating exchange of views and collaboration on mutually important agendas. He also emphasized the importance of exploring new venues of cooperation, including agriculture, mining, ICT, manufacturing and green economy.

He also highlighted Ethiopia's comprehensive economic reforms and called on Azerbaijani public and private companies to leverage the country’s attractive investment opportunities.

Mesganu further congratulated Azerbaijan on successfully hosting COP29 and noted the shared commitment of both nations to addressing climate change. He mentioned Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, through which over 40 billion seedlings have been planted over the past six years.

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has announced that its dams are full following the recent rainy season, ensuring sufficient water for power generation to meet the planned target this year.

According to EEP Planning Bureau and Power Plant Operation Sector Manager Tiruwork Shiferaw, the dams have absorbed enough water during the rainy season to support full-capacity power generation. EEP is actively managing water levels in the dams to optimize power output.

Starting tomorrow, the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) will permit forex traders to sell 50% of their foreign currency earnings immediately, while the remaining 50% can be held in Ethiopian accounts for an indefinite period.

According to NBE Governor Mamo Mihretu, the previous regulation required traders to sell half of their foreign currency earnings to banks immediately and the remaining half within a month. This measure was initially implemented to ensure a steady supply of foreign currency within Ethiopia.

However, with the revised rule, forex traders now have the flexibility to retain 50% of their earnings without a time restriction, thereby removing the one-month selling requirement.

Dr. Gedion recalled the strong and unwavering “All Weather Strategic Partnership” between Ethiopia and China, emphasizing the commitment to elevate this robust relationship to a higher level.

Dr. Gedion highlighted that efforts are underway to implement the directions set during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit to further strengthen Ethio-China relations. He also briefed the Ambassador on the current situation in the Horn of Africa."

Ethiopia collaborates with China not only on a bilateral level but also multilaterally, particularly on issues of peace and security in the Horn of Africa, the Minister added.

Ambassador Chen Hai delivered a congratulatory message sent by the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs.The Ambassador also expressed his commitment to working toward the implementation of the agreements reached by the leaders of the two nations during the FOCAC meetings on economic, trade, and investment sectors.

The 46th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) opened this morning at the Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa.

The occasion was graced by the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Taye Astke-Selassie. The President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino was also in attendance.

In his opening remarks, CAF President Patrice Mosepe, thanked the People and Government of Ethiopia for graciously hosting the historic continental congress. He also called upon the participants to observe a moment of silence to honour fallen football heroes of Africa.

In his welcoming remarks, the President of Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF), Isayas Jira said, Ethiopia holds a special place in African football and expressed his gratitude to one of the pioneering figures in African football, Yidenekachew Tessema, a founding member of CAF in the late 1950s and the 4th CAF President.

He underscored that Ethiopia has long been the cornerstone of African football and continues to play a pivotal role in its future. He added, the collaborative efforts between CAF and FIFA need to be further strengthened, and stressed Ethiopia's unwavering commitment to host the 2029 edition of African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Chief Guest of Honour, President Taye Astke-Selassie, warmly welcomed the esteemed participants to the Land of Origins. While expressing Ethiopia's continued commitment to further advancing African football, President Taye stressed the fact that sports including football serves as a unifying force across Africa, transcending boundaries and differences. He added, this dividend falls in line with Agenda 2063.

President Taye also called upon CAF to endorse Ethiopia's bid to host AFCON 2029.

FIFA President Infantino, on his part stated, Ethiopia contributed significantly to CAF and the unity of Africa. He further urged African countries to invest in youth football to nurture the stars of tomorrow.
