"The Silent Struggle: Ethiopian Physicians on the Brink"

Behind every white coat in Ethiopia is a silent battle—a war waged in crowded hospital wards, in sleepless nights, in the weight of expectations that crush the soul. Physicians, the very lifeline of the sick, are themselves bleeding under a system that offers little but hardship.

The workload is relentless. One doctor for hundreds, sometimes thousands. Patients flood the hallways, their pain echoing against the walls of ill-equipped hospitals.

The tools to save lives are often missing—no gloves, no drugs, no machines—only a pair of tired hands and a mind forced to perform miracles with nothing.

And then, there’s the financial reality—perhaps the cruelest cut of all. Years of brutal study, sacrifices made, families left behind, only to earn barely enough to survive.

While the world sees doctors as privileged, Ethiopian physicians know a different truth: the paycheck doesn’t match the burden. Dreams of a better future grow dim under the weight of unpaid bills, rent struggles, and the ever-looming question—is this worth it?

Marriage, too, suffers. What time is left for love when the hospital owns your days and nights? When exhaustion replaces affection? When financial struggles turn promises of a beautiful future into cold silence? Many marriages crumble, victims of a profession that demands too much and gives too little.

And so, one by one, they leave. The best minds, the most dedicated hearts—gone, seeking refuge in lands where their efforts are valued, where their work is not a life sentence of suffering. Ethiopia loses its healers, not because they lack love for their people, but because love alone cannot feed families or mend broken spirits.

Yet, despite it all, many stay. Not out of comfort, but out of duty. Out of a desperate hope that things will change. But how long can hope endure when the system itself is sick?

Exciting News!

The Federal Education and Training Authority (ETA), Dire Dawa University , Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA), Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA), and Ethiopian Association of Anesthetists (EAA) have signed an agreement to digitalize the Accreditation of Health Programs.


This groundbreaking initiative, supported by USAID Medical Excellence Activity, aims to streamline and modernize the accreditation process.

According to Dr. Dunkana Ngusa, Deputy Director General of ETA's Accreditation and Standardization Department, the authority is already actively evaluating applications submitted by higher education institutions.

This new digital system will help improve the quality of health education and training in Ethiopia!

በድንገት ከዚህ ዓለም በድንገተኛ ህልፈተ ህይወት ለተለየን ለዶ/ር አቤል መልካሙ መታሰቢያ በስሙ ጤና ተቋም እንዲሰየምለት በአስክሬን ሽኝቱ ወቅት ከወዳጅ ዘመዶቹና ከድሬዳዋ ህብረተሰብ በተጠየቀውና የድሬዳዋ አስተዳደር ጤና ቢሮ ኃላፊ ዶ/ር ፅጌረዳ ክፍሌና የቢሮው አመራሮች በገቡት ቃል መሰረት ከዚህ ቀደም ገንደ ቆሬ ጤና ጣቢያ ተብሎ የሚጠራውን ጤና ተቋም በድሬዳዋ አስተዳደር ጤና ቢሮ የዶ/ር አቤል መልካሙ መታሰቢያ ጤና ጣቢያ ተብሎ እንዲጠራ መወሰኑን የድሬዳዋ ከንቲባ አቶ ከድር ጁሃር ይፋ አድርገዋል።

አቶ ከድር ጁሃር ዶ/ር አቤል በገንደቆሬ አካባቢ መኖሩንና በጤናጣቢያው ለሚታከሙ እንዲሁም በተለያየ ችግር ውስጥ ለሚገኙ የህብረተሰብ ክፍሎችም ድጋፍ ያደርግ እንደነበረ አስታውሰው በዚህ መሰረት ጤና ተቋሙ በስሙ መሰየሙንና በተጨማሪም ዶ/ር አቤል የጀመረውን በዝቅተኛ ኢኮኖሚ ውስጥ ለሚገኙና የተለያዩ ችግሮች ያሉባቸው ህሙማንን እንዲሁም ጧሪ የሌላቸውን የመደገፍ ተግባር ለማሰቀጠለ መሆኑንና ለፋውንዴሽኑ ድጋፍ አስተዳደሩም የራሱን ድርሻ እንደሚወጣ ተናግረዋል።

የድሬዳዋ አስተዳደር ጤና ቢሮ ኃላፊ ዶ/ር ፅጌረዳ ክፍሌ በበኩላቸው ዶ/ር አቤል መልካሙ የሚደግፋቸው የህብረተሰብ ክፍሎች በሱ ህልፈተ ህይወት ምክኒያት ድጋፋቸው ፈፅሞ እንዳይቋረጥ በስሙ የገንደቆሬ ጤና ጣቢያ ተሰይሟል ያሉ ሲሆን የቀድሞው የገንደቆሬ ጤና ጣቢያ ያሁኑ የዶ/ር አቤል መልካሙ መታሰቢያ ጤና ጣቢያ የጤና ባለሞያዎችና ድጋፍ ሰጪ ሠራተኞች የዶ/ር አቤልን የቀበጎነት አርዓያ በማስቀጠል የጤና ተቋሙን ገፅታ ከቀድሞው በተሻለ አገልግሎትና ርህራሄ በተሞላበት የበጎነት ሥራ በመሥራት ስሙን ልታስቀጥሉ ይገባል ብለዋል።

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a significant investment to strengthen our health workforce through a direct transition award to the Ethiopian Medical Association, Ethiopian Midwifery Association, and Ethiopian Anesthetists Association.
This award will enable our associations to strengthen the quality of pre-service education, continuing professional development (CPD), accreditation of academic programs, and professional regulation.
The three professional associations have reported using their booth at the event to showcase their work, including strengthening pre-service education by developing evidence-based curricula, providing faculty training, and establishing robust quality assurance mechanisms; enhancing continuing professional development (CPD) through webinars, workshops, conferences, and online courses; improving accreditation processes by streamlining procedures, developing clear standards, and conducting rigorous evaluations of academic programs; and enforcing professional regulations by monitoring ethical standards, addressing disciplinary issues, and promoting professional development.

The launch event was attended and key note speech were given by distinguished guests, State Minister of Health Dr. Ayele Teshome, State Minister of Education Mr. Kora Teshome, Dr. Dunkana Negussa of the Ethiopian Education and Training Authority (ETA), and USAID/Ethiopia’s Health Office Director Jonathan Ross. Partners and board members of the professional associations were also in attendance.
By empowering these associations, USAID aims to contribute to a more skilled, ethical, and responsive health workforce in Ethiopia.

ይህ መድኃኒት በሕጋዊ መንገድ በባለስልጣን መስሪያ ቤታችን ያልተመዘገበ በመሆኑ ጥራቱ፣ ደህንነቱና ውጤታማነቱ አይታወቅም።በተጨማሪም ፣ የዚህ መድኃኒት የጎንዮሽ ጉዳቶች የምግብ ፍላጎት ማጣት ፣ ተቅማጥ ፣ የሆድ ህመም ፣ ማቅለሽለሽ ፣ ማስታወክ ፣ እንቅልፍ ማጣት ፣ ድካም፤ የእይታ መዛባት፤ መፍዘዝ ፣ ራስ ምታት ፣ የቆዳ ሽፍታ ፣ የጉበት ኢንዛይሞች መጨመርና ለረጅም ጊዜ ጥቅም ላይ ሲውል የኩላሊት ጉዳትን ያጠቃልላል። ጥናቶች እንደሚያሳዩት ይህንን መድኃኒት ለረጅም ጊዜ መጠቀም ከባድ የጉበት፣ የኩላሊት ጉዳት፣ የልብ ድካም እና ስትሮክ የመያዝ እድልን ከፍ ሊያደርግ ይችላል።


በመሆኑም ህብረተሰቡ ይህንን መድኃኒት ከመጠቀም እንዲቆጠብ እያሳሰብን መድኃኒቱን በአካባቢዎት ካገኙ በነጻ ስልክ ቁጥር 8482 ደውለው ለኢትዮጵያ የምግብና የመድኃኒት ባለስልጣን ወይም ለክልል ጤና ተቆጣጣሪ አካላት እንዲጠቁሙ በአክብሮት እንጠይቃለን።

The Declaration of Helsinki 2024 Revision has been adopted by the World Medical Association General Assembly in Helsinki, after a 30-month review period.

This global reference for medical research involving human participants has been updated to reflect 2024 realities. Substantive changes can be categorised in two areas:

➡️ Participant-centered inclusion, respect and protection
➡️ Research beneficence and value, including the pursuit of “individual and public health”, upholding scientific rigor and integrity, and considered distribution of benefits, risks and burdens.

The 2024 revision of the Declaration of Helsinki replaces ‘subjects’ with ‘participants' throughout out of respect for the rights, agency, and importance of those individuals.

Special thanks to everyone involved including:

👏 Input from 110 partners, including WMA constituent members from two public comment periods

ዶ/ር ተስፋዬ ተሊላና ባለቤታቸው ዶ/ር ኦብሲኔት መርድ ይባላሉ።

ኑሯቸው በአሜሪካ አትላንታ ነው።

ዶ/ር ተስፋዬ ተሊላ በፒየድሞንት ኒውናን ሆስፒታል ኢንተርቬንሽናል ካርዲዎሎጂስት ሲሆኑ፣ ባለቤታቸው ዶ/ር ኦብሲኔት መርድ ደግሞ በሞርሃውስ የህክምና ትምህርት ቤት የህክምና ትምህርት ባልደረባ ናቸው።

በተያዘው ዓመት ጥንዶቹ የህክምና ሙያቸውን ተጠቅመው ወገኖቻቸውን ለመርዳት ወደ ትውልድ ሀገራቸው ሁለት ጊዜ በመምጣት ከመቶ በላይ የልብ ህሙማን ህክምና እንዲያገኙ አድርገዋል።

ጥንዶቹ ‘ኸርት አታክ ኢትዮጵያ’ የተባለ ግብረ-ሰናይ ድርጅት በመመስረትም ለልብ ህሙማን የሚያደርጉትን ድጋፍ ተቋማዊ አድርገውታል።

ጥንዶቹ በዘርፉ ያለውን ችግር ለማቃለል በግል ከሚያደርጉት ጥረት በተጨማሪ ዓላማቸውን የሚደግፉ የህክምና ባለሙያዎች ቡድንን በማስተባበር እንዲሁም ከአንድ ሚሊዮን ዶላር በላይ የሚገመት የህክምና ቁሳቁስ ይዘው  በመምጣት  ለልብ ህሙማን ድጋፍ በማድረግ ላይ ይገኛሉ።

የድርጅቱ ዋና ስራ አስፈጻሚ ዶ/ር ኦብሲኔት ዓላማቸው በዘርፉ ለሚታየው ችግር ስርዓታዊ ምላሽ መስጠት የሚችል አሰራር መዘርጋት መሆኑን ፎክስ ፋይቭ አትላንታ ዘግቧል።

ዶ/ር ተስፋዬም በበኩላቸው ያስተማረቻቸውን ሀገርና ህዝባቸውን መልሶ መክፈል ስላለባቸው የጀመሩትን የህክምና ድጋፍና የሰው ሀይል አቅም ግንባታ ስራ አጠናክረው እንደሚቀጥሉ ገልጸዋል።

የጉንፋን ሕመም በተፈጥሮ የላይኛውን የመተንፈሻ የሰውነት ክፍሎች ማለትም አፍንጫን፣ ጎሮሮን እና የአየር መተላለፊያ ባንቧን የሚያጠቃ ተላላፊ ሕመም ነዉ።
ሪኖ ቫይረስ ለጉንፉን መከሰት ዋና ምክንያት ሲሆን፣ ኮሮና፣ ኢንፍሉዌንዛ፣ ፓራ ኢንፍሉዌንዛ፣ አር ኤስ ቪ(RSV) ቫይረሶች ደግሞ ለጉንፉን መሰል ህመሞች መከሰት ዋና ዋና ምክንያቶች ናቸዉ። ከተጠቀሱት ቫይረሶችም ለጉንፋን ሕመም መከሰት 50 በመቶ ድርሻውን የሚይዘው ሪኖ ቫይረስ ነው፡፡ በደረቅ ነፋሳማ ወቅት የአፍንጫ የውስጠኛው ስስ ሽፋን “ሙከስ መምብሬን” ስለሚደርቅ የጉንፋን ሕመም እና ተላላፊነቱ ይጨምራል፡፡ የክረምት ወራት ወይም የዝናብ ወቅት ማብቃቱን ተከትሎ መስከረምን ጨምሮ በጥቅምትና ህዳር ወራት እንደዚህ አይነት ጉንፋን መሰል ህመም የሚጠበቅ ነው፡፡
ሕመሙ ከሰው ወደ ሰው የሚተላለፈውም በቫይረሱ የተጠቃ ሰው በሚያስልበት ወይም በሚያስነጥስበት ጊዜ እንደሆነና በተጨማሪም ሰዎች ቫይረሱ ያረፈበትን የበር እጀታ፣ ጠረጴዛ ወይም በሕመምተኛው የተነካካንን ሰው እጅ ከነኩ በኋላ አፋቸውንና አፍንጫቸውን ሲነካኩ ቫይረሱ ለመተላለፍ በሚፈጠርለት ምቹ ሁኔታ ነው።
የጉንፋን ሕመም የመጀመሪያ ምልክቱ ከመጀመሩ አንድ ቀን በፊት ተላላፊ ሊሆን ይችላል፤ ሕመሙ ከጀመረ ከ 5 እስከ 10 ባሉት ቀናት ደግሞ ሕመምተኛው ቫይረሱን ያስተላልፋል። ህመሙ አብዛኛዉን ጊዜ እስከ 2 ሳምንት ሊቆይ ይችላል። ምልክቶቹም እንደ የአፍንጫ ፈሳሽ መብዛት፣ ሳል፣ ትኩሳት፣ ራስ ምታትና ጉሮሮን መከርከር፣ ማስነጠስ፣ አይን ማሳከክ እና መቅላት፣ ማስታወክ፣ ከፍ ሲልም የትንፋሽ ማጠር፣ ከፍተኛ ድካምና የምግብ ፍላጎት መቀነስ ዋና ዋናዎቹ ናቸዉ።
በኢትዮጵያ ህብረተሰብ ጤና ኢንስቲትዩት ከ2003 ዓ ም ጀምሮ የእንፍሉዌንዛ እና መሰል የመተንፈሻ አካላት በሽታዎች ቅኝትና ምላሽ በሁሉም ክልሎች እና ከተማ መስተዳድሮች እየተሰራ ይገኛል። ከመስከረም ወር ጀምሮ መሰል ህመም ተሰምቷቸው ወደ ጤና ተቋማት በመሄድ ናሙና ከሰጡት ታካሚዎች ውስጥ አር ኤስ ቪ የተገኘባቸዉ ቁጥር የመጨመር ሁኔታ ያሳያል፡፡ በዚሁ ወቅት የተከሰተው ጉንፋን መሰል ህመም (አር ኤስ ቪ) በተለይ በህጻናት ላይ በብዛት የተከሰተ ሲሆን ለዚህም ወቅቱ ትምህርት ቤት የተከፈተበት በመሆኑ ለበሽታው መስፋፋት አስተዋጽኦ አድርጓል፡፡ ባለፈዉ 1 ወር ዉስጥ ተመርምረዉ አር ኤስ ቪ ከተገኘባቸዉ ታካሚዎች መካከል 84% ያክሉ እድሜያቸዉ ከ5 አመት በታች ነዉ። እንደዚሁም ባለፈዉ ሳምንት ለአር ኤስ ቪ ከተመረመሩት 81 ናሙናዎች 49 (60.5%) ያህሉ ቫይረሱ ተገኝቶባቸዋል።
አስፈላጊው ጥንቃቄ ካልተደረገ በሽታው የመዛመት እድሉ ከፍ ሊል እንደሚችል፤ በተለይ ቀዳሚ ተጎጅ ሊሆኑ የሚችሉ እንደ ህጻናትና አረጋውያን ያሉ የህብረተሰብ ክፍሎች አና ተጓዳኝ የጤና ችግር እንደነ አስም፣ የስኳር በሽታ፣ ካንሰር እና ሌሎች ሥር የሰደዱ በሽታዎች ያሉባቸው ሕሙማን ከፍተኛ ጥንቃቄ ልናደርግላቸው እና ወደ ጤና ተቋማት በመሄድ አስፈላጊዉን ምርመራና ህክምና ሊያደርጉ ይገባል1፡፡ በተጨማሪም የጉንፋን ሕመም የጆሮ ኢንፌክሽን እና የሳንባ ምች ሕመምን ጨምሮ ለተለያዩ ሕመሞች ተጋላጭ ሊያደርግ ይችላል፡፡
ጉንፋን መሰል በሽታን ከምንከላከልባቸው መንገዶች መካከልም የእጅ ንጽህናን መጠበቅ፣ ሰዎች በተሰበሰቡበት ቦታ የአፍና አፍንጫ ጭምብል(ማስክ) በማድረግና በዕለት ኑሯችን የምንጠቀምባቸውን በከባቢዎቻችን የሚገኙ ቁሳቁሶችን ማጽዳት እና የብዙሃን ማጓጓዣ ትራንስፖርት ላይ መስኮቶችን በመክፈት በቂ የአየር ዝዉዉር እንዲኖር በማድረግ የበሽታዉን የመተላለፍ ዕድል መቀነስ ይቻላል፡፡ ስለዚህ ህብረተሰቡ አስፈላጊውን የጥንቃቄ እርምጃዎችን እንዲወስድና ጠንከር ያለ የበሽታው ምልክት የሚታይበት ሰው በፍጥነት በአቅራቢያው ወደሚገኝ የጤና ተቋም በመሄድ አስፈላጊውን የህክምና ምክር አና ዕርዳታ ማግኘት አለበት፡፡

በመሣሪያ ላይ ብቻ የተመሠረተ የአተነፋፈስ ሥርዓት ማቋረጥን የሚፈቅድ ረቂቅ ሕግ፣ በጤና አገልግሎት አስተዳደርና ቁጥጥር ረቂቅ አዋጅ ተካቶ፣ ለሕዝብ ተወካዮች ምክር ቤት ቀረበ፡፡
በመሣሪያ ላይ ብቻ የተመሠረተ የአተነፋፈስ ማቋረጥ የሚቻለው የታማሚዎችን የልብና የመተንፈሻ አካላት የአሠራር ሥርዓት መመለስ በማይችልበት ደረጃ ሥራቸውን ሲያቆሙ፣ ወይም የአንጎል ሞት ሲረጋገጥ ብቻ እንደሆነ በረቂቅ አዋጁ በአንቀጽ 14 ተደንግጓል፡፡ የአንቀጹ ዝርዝር አፈጻጸም የጤና ሚኒስቴር በሚያወጣው መመርያ እንደሚወሰን ተመላክቷል፡፡
ከዚህ ቀደም በመሣሪያ የታገዙ ታማሚዎች ሕይወታቸው እንደማይተርፍ እየታወቀ፣ መሣሪያውን ለመንቀል ከሥነ ምግባር አኳያ ለመወሰን ይከብድ እንደነበር የሕክምና ባለሙያዎች ይገልጻሉ፡፡

Ethiopian Anesthetists Association Celebrates World Anesthesia Day

Addis Ababa – The Ethiopian Anesthetists Association celebrated the 178th World Anesthesia Day today, centered on the theme "Health Workforce Wellbeing." The event, held at the Ministry of Health, featured a half-day advocacy session.

Dr. Bahiru Bezabih, a board member of the Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA), addressed keynote speech by discussing the challenges faced by health professionals and outlining the support EMA provides to its members.

Dr. Ayele Teshome, State Minister of Health, opened the session by addressing the concerns commonly raised by healthcare professionals and detailed the government's initiatives to respond to these issues.

The program included insightful research presentations and a panel discussion that focused on significant gaps in health insurance coverage for healthcare workers. Key discussions revolved around improving health insurance for those in the medical field.

Delegates from various professional associations expressed their concerns about the difficulties their members encounter, particularly the lack of free health coverage for healthcare professionals while on duty. This highlighted the urgent need for reforms in health insurance to better support those dedicated to patient care.

Dr. Abrham from Hakim Page shared insights into the frustrations felt among professionals and emphasized the necessity of implementing free health insurance for healthcare workers.
