The workshop brought together a diverse group of participants from government sectors, UN agencies, and different partners. The objective of the meeting was to produce the 2024 mandatory state parties annual report for Ethiopia based on the One Health approach, which will be submitted to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Dr. Messay Hailu, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (EPHI) Director General at the opening of the workshop said that the SPAR process is vital in tracking the country's progress and identifying areas that require further attention and improvement. The Director General further stressed that the tool, which will be used by the participants, has been instrumental in monitoring the implementation of the capacities required under the international health regulation. Dr. Messay further mentioned the datas collected have been made available through the Global Health Observatory (GHO), providing valuable insights into the health profiles of countries and regions.
Speaking on his behalf, Dr. Feyessa Regassa, International Health Regulations and One Health Office Head, stated that since the One Health approach acknowledges the interdependence of environmental, animal, and human health, it is essential to attain the best possible health outcomes and tackle the intricate health issues that affect everyone and cut across national boundaries. In addition to expressing their support and commitment to the overall activities, partner organizations from WHO, FAO, CDC, USAID, UKHS, and RTSL Heads & representatives reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining and accelerating the momentum and tackling new issues through cooperation and communication.

Ethiopia Public Health Institute: A Pillar of Community Health
The Ethiopia Public Health Institute (EPHI) serves as a key institution dedicated to enhancing public health in Ethiopia. Established to address health challenges and promote the well-being of the population, EPHI plays a vital role in generating and disseminating health information. The institute's mission extends beyond mere data collection; it actively engages with communities to ensure that health initiatives are tailored to meet the specific needs of Ethiopian citizens. With a focus on disease prevention, health promotion, and health systems strengthening, EPHI's work is crucial in tackling endemic diseases, improving maternal and child health, and responding to public health emergencies. As Ethiopia navigates various health challenges, EPHI stands at the forefront, championing health solutions that contribute to the overall development and resilience of the nation.
What are the main functions of the Ethiopia Public Health Institute (EPHI)?
The Ethiopia Public Health Institute (EPHI) has several key functions that are essential for the country's public health landscape. Firstly, EPHI conducts vital research to generate data on health trends and disease outbreaks, which informs public health policies and strategies. It serves as a repository for health information, ensuring accurate and timely dissemination to stakeholders and the general public. Moreover, EPHI is instrumental in the development and implementation of health programs aimed at addressing various public health issues, such as maternal and child health, infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases.
In addition to research and program implementation, EPHI plays a crucial role in capacity building of health professionals and institutions. The institute offers training and technical support to health workers across Ethiopia, thereby enhancing the capabilities of the health system to respond to emerging challenges. Furthermore, EPHI collaborates with international organizations, NGOs, and government entities to align efforts towards improving the overall health status of the population.
How does EPHI contribute to disease prevention and health promotion in Ethiopia?
EPHI actively contributes to disease prevention and health promotion through various initiatives designed to educate the public and reduce health risks. One of the primary strategies is the implementation of vaccination campaigns, which are vital in preventing communicable diseases like measles, polio, and hepatitis. These initiatives are crucial in increasing immunization coverage and improving overall public health outcomes. EPHI also conducts awareness campaigns that focus on hygiene practices, nutrition, and lifestyle choices that promote better health.
Additionally, EPHI leverages community engagement to ensure that health messages resonate with diverse populations across the country. By working closely with local communities, the institute tailors its health promotion activities to address specific cultural and social factors that influence health behaviors. This grassroots approach is essential for fostering a culture of health awareness and encouraging individuals to take proactive steps towards their health.
What role does EPHI play during public health emergencies?
In times of public health emergencies, such as disease outbreaks or natural disasters, EPHI takes a leading role in coordinating response efforts. The institute develops emergency response plans that outline strategies for containment, treatment, and prevention of further spread of diseases. EPHI collaborates with national and international health organizations to mobilize resources and provide timely support to affected regions. An example of this is EPHI’s involvement during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it spearheaded testing, contact tracing, and vaccination efforts across the country.
Moreover, EPHI conducts regular assessments and surveillance to monitor health threats and their impact on the population. By analyzing health data, the institute can quickly identify emerging crises and respond accordingly, ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to safeguard public health. The ability to rapidly adapt to changing health needs is crucial in ensuring the health security of the Ethiopian population.
How does EPHI engage with the community to promote health?
Community engagement is at the heart of EPHI's approach to public health. The institute actively involves community members in health program planning and implementation, ensuring that their voices and needs are considered. EPHI organizes workshops, seminars, and training sessions that empower community health workers and volunteers to promote health education. This participatory approach not only enhances the effectiveness of health interventions but also fosters ownership and sustainability within communities.
Additionally, EPHI utilizes various communication strategies, including social media, radio broadcasts, and printed materials, to disseminate health information. By reaching out through multiple channels, EPHI ensures that health messages are accessible to a wide audience, including those in remote areas. This commitment to community engagement helps build trust and encourages individuals to actively participate in health initiatives.
What are some of the challenges faced by EPHI in fulfilling its mandate?
Despite its critical role, EPHI faces several challenges that hinder its ability to effectively fulfill its mandate. One of the primary challenges is limited funding and resources, which can impede the implementation of comprehensive health programs. Without adequate financial support, EPHI struggles to maintain its infrastructure and cover the operational costs necessary for conducting research and community outreach. This limitation becomes pronounced during health emergencies when immediate resources are crucial for response efforts.
Another significant challenge is the variation in health literacy and access to health services across different regions of Ethiopia. In rural areas, for instance, there may be a lack of health facilities and misinformation regarding health practices, which complicates EPHI's efforts to promote health education. Addressing these disparities requires targeted strategies that consider geographical, cultural, and socioeconomic factors, demanding a multifaceted approach to health promotion and disease prevention.
