Nearly 1.2 million people lose their lives on the world’s roads every year.

They set out on a regular trip – to work, to school, to go shopping, to see a friend or to go on holiday – but that journey becomes their last.

My call to Ministers attending the 4th Ministerial Conference on #RoadSafety: The solutions are not always easy or popular, but we know they work, they save lives and are a good long-term investment in sustainability and productivity: bit.ly/4i3Lt1O

Together, we can work for a world in which everyone reaches their destination safely.

Every day, WHO scans the world for health threats.

And we respond to dozens of outbreaks, conflicts, disasters and more.

Here are some highlights of how our teams across the world serve the most vulnerable people.

-it has no medical benefits;

-it violates their rights.

Since Saturday, WHO has supported the medical evacuation of 104 patients - large majority of them children – out of Gaza via the Rafah crossing to receive specialized care in Egypt. 172 companions travelled with the patients.

Around 12000-14000 people still need medical evacuation. We continue to urge for scaled-up approvals via all possible routes, including restoration of medical referrals to the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, so the lives of thousands of patients can be saved in time.

WHO staff are working around the world to help the people we serve to:
- breathe cleaner air, eat healthier diets, drink safer water and use safer roads;
- get the safe, quality health services and products they need, where and when they need them, without worrying about what it will cost;
- stop outbreaks and deliver lifesaving care in the most difficult and dangerous situations.

Yesterday, I presented my report to the WHO Executive Board, summarizing what my colleagues have achieved in the past year: https://bit.ly/3CLOogp

We remain committed to achieve #HealthForAll and everywhere. #EB156

With WHO's support, Uganda’s Health Ministry has started a vaccine trial against #Ebola Sudan virus today. The trial will enroll contacts of people with the disease, and contacts of the contacts.

This vaccination trial was initiated with record speed, only three days since the outbreak was declared, while ensuring full compliance with international and national regulatory and ethical requirements. It is also the first trial to assess the clinical efficacy of a vaccine against Ebola Sudan virus disease.

This trial demonstrates the importance of investing in R&D for vaccines and treatments and outbreak response preparedness, as well as partnerships. We thank Makerere University and UVRI for their leadership, as well as Africa CDC, CEPI, EU HERA and IDRC for their collaboration on this lifesaving effort.

WHO will continue supporting the government in a comprehensive response to bring the outbreak under control.

This #WorldNTDDay, WHO verifies #Niger as the first country in the African Region to eliminate onchocerciasis.

I congratulate the government and dedicated health workers for their commitment to liberating its population from this blinding, stigmatizing illness that causes so much human suffering among the poorest.

Over the past 20 years, more than 50 countries have eliminated one or more neglected tropical disease, with support from WHO and dedicated programmes funded by generous donors.

We’re calling on all partners to Unite, Act, Eliminate -- because neglected tropical diseases still affect over 1 billion people, mostly in the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities.

WHO expresses deep concern about the implications of the United States government’s immediate funding pause for #HIV programmes in low- and middle-income countries. These programmes provide access to life-saving HIV therapy to more than 30 million people worldwide.

This funding halt can put people living with HIV at immediate increased risk of illness and death and undermine efforts to prevent transmission in communities and countries.

Such measures, if prolonged, could lead to rises in new infections and deaths, reversing decades of progress and potentially taking the world back to the 1980s and 1990s when millions died of HIV every year globally, including many in the USA.

We call on the US government to enable additional exemptions to ensure the delivery of lifesaving HIV treatment and care: https://bit.ly/42yxxIz

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease occurring in over 120 countries, with around 200 000 new cases reported every year.

But we can eliminate leprosy. That's why on #WorldLeprosyDay, we call on all countries to unite and act to achieve this goal.

Tanzania has gained experience in controlling Marburg previously, as this is the second reported outbreak of the disease in Kagera. The first outbreak was in March 2023. I hope this experience will help Tanzania to bring the current outbreak under control quickly.

I pledged WHO’s continued support for the response, and I released US$3 million from the Contingency Fund for Emergencies. We thank our partners for their support.

I thanked the President for her leadership and commitment to health.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

I am in #Tanzania and had a productive discussion with President Samia Suluhu covering a wide range of areas concerning her government’s work to strengthen its health system; the enactment of the Universal Health Insurance Act 2023; launch of the Community Health Workers Program in 2023 and investments made in emergency preparedness.

We also discussed the #Marburg Virus Disease outbreak in the northwestern Kagera region, during which she told me they had confirmed one case of the disease. Following our meeting the President made the announcement in the press conference.

The government is scaling up its response by enhancing case detection, establishing treatment centers, setting up a mobile laboratory for testing samples, and deploying national response teams.

The ceasefire in #Gaza and the start of the hostage and prisoner release process bring great hope for millions of people whose lives have been ravaged by the conflict.

It is a moment I have been calling and hoping for.

However, addressing the massive health needs and restoring the health system in Gaza will be a complex and challenging task, given the scale of destruction, operational complexity and constraints involved.

WHO calls on all parties to uphold their commitment to fully implement the ceasefire agreement and to continue working towards lasting peace.

Today, WHO and partners supported medical evacuation of four patients and five companions to Jordan, and six children patients and five companions to the USA where they will receive specialised health care.

Over 12,000 people in Gaza still need medical evacuations. We continue to urge Israel to:

2) Expedite the process of approvals for medical evacuations;
3) Allow all possible corridors and border crossings to be used for safe medical evacuations.

Today we managed to evacuate our UNHAS colleague who was injured in yesterday’s attack on Sana’a airport in #Yemen. We are now in #Jordan, where he will receive further medical treatment.

Deepest gratitude to the UNHAS team for their service and swift evacuation from #Yemen, where we were on a UN mission to negotiate for the release of detained colleagues. Attacks on civilians and humanitarians must stop, everywhere. #NotATarget

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

Our mission to negotiate the release of UN staff detainees and to assess the health and humanitarian situation in #Yemen concluded today. We continue to call for the detainees' immediate release.

As we were about to board our flight from Sana’a, about two hours ago, the airport came under aerial bombardment. One of our plane’s crew members was injured. At least two people were reported killed at the airport. The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge — just a few meters from where we were — and the runway were damaged.

We will need to wait for the damage to the airport to be repaired before we can leave.

My UN and WHO colleagues and I are safe.

Our heartfelt condolences to the families whose loved ones lost their lives in the attack.

WHO and partners reached Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern #Gaza two days ago, amid hostilities and explosions in the vicinity of the hospital during the mission. The team delivered 5000 liters of fuel, food and medicines, and transferred 3 patients and 6 companions to Al-Shifa Hospital.

In the last week, four WHO missions to Kamal Adwan have been arbitrarily denied, including the re-deployment of the international emergency medical team, which had self-evacuated from the hospital on 6 December due to hostilities. This has left the hospital without specialized personnel for surgical and maternal care.

Hostilities around the hospital continue and recent attacks have further damaged the oxygen supply, generators, and broken windows and doors of the patients' rooms.

The conditions in the hospital are simply appalling.

We urge for the protection of health care and for this hell to stop! Ceasefire!

While the climate crisis is multi-faceted, from the perspective of WHO, it is fundamentally a health crisis.

I was privileged to appear before the International Court of Justice today and present the evidence on the health impacts of climate change that my colleagues have collected for over 25 years: https://bit.ly/3Bq1uzq

Mitigation is not yet on pace to be effective to avoid the most catastrophic impacts.

Only rapid and equitable #ClimateAction, including the phase out of fossil fuels, can protect the health of both people and the planet — for a healthier world now, and for the future we leave our children.

When you need health services, can you access them?

Can you afford them?

Shockingly, for too many people, the answer is no. Many have to choose between health care or their next meal; between medicines or their children's schoolbooks.

It feels like yesterday, when President Emmanuel Macron and I held a corridor conversation at the G20 Leaders Summit in Argentina in 2018 about the potential to revolutionise training for health professionals by setting up an academy.

In two weeks time, on 17 December, the journey will reach its first key milestone -- the #WHOAcademy inauguration in Lyon.

The Academy’s vision is straightforward yet ambitious: a world where every health and care worker, policymaker and WHO team member is equipped with the skills and competencies they need to achieve health for all.

I invite all Member States and health professionals around the world to join us in celebrating this moment and help us make the WHO Academy a centre of excellence for the whole world!

An additional 17 patients from Gaza were evacuated to Jordan yesterday for specialized medical treatment. 12 will continue receiving care in the US.

Arrived in Rio for the #G20 leaders summit. I am inspired by the beautiful welcome by my friend, Health Minister Nisia Ttrindade, as #Brazil illuminated the iconic Cristo Redentor in solidarity with WHO and the global movement to eliminate #CervicalCancer.

This is the one cancer we have the tools to eliminate. We call on G20 leaders to support access to HPV vaccines for all girls in all countries, and access to screening and treatment for all women who need it.

Let’s make cervical cancer elimination a reality!

Why does climate change matter?

We care because, ultimately, climate change is about human health, as President Pedro Sànchez said.

Rising sea levels and temperatures contribute to cardiovascular disease, and fuel the spread of communicable diseases to new places.

Extreme weather events take lives.

Air pollution fills our lungs with poison.

The climate crisis is not sometime in the future. It’s right here and now. #COP29

Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza is receiving a constant stream of trauma patients due to ongoing hostilities in the area. The hospital has just 1 pediatrician, 1 orthopedic surgeon & limited nursing staff - WHO team assessed. The hospital building & equipment sustained damage during the most recent siege, & its 4 ambulances were destroyed.

WHO transferred 23 critical patients from Kamal Adwan to Al-Shifa Hospital, & 16 patients from Al-Shifa to Nasser Medical Complex in a multi-day mission to north Gaza in the past 2 days.

We’ve provided medical supplies, food & water for patients at Kamal Adwan - but much more is needed. This week we’ve also provided 40,000l of fuel & medical supplies for 6 six hospitals in Gaza City.

As the situation continues to worsen across Gaza, esp. in the north, keeping hospitals functional is of utmost importance.

I will repeat again: the only path to safeguarding the health care system in Gaza from collapse is an immediate & unconditional ceasefire. Lives depend on it!

Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza is still under siege, but we managed to get in touch with the staff. Three health workers and another employee have been injured, 44 health workers have been detained and four ambulances damaged. Around 600 patients, health workers and individuals are currently sheltering in the hospital.

The siege and attacks on health workers occurred just hours after the WHO-led mission which delivered essential supplies to keep the facility operational and took critical patients to Al-Shifa Hospital.

We urge for hospitals, health workers and patients to be protected. Ceasefire!

On World Polio Day, I have one urgent ask for world leaders: please join Team #EndPolio.

Your leadership, political will, and investment are critical to protect every last child from polio in Afghanistan, in Pakistan, in Gaza.

To deliver vaccines, we need safe passage. To ensure their futures, we need peace.

Let's unite for both: vaccines and peace. The world’s children are counting on us.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

23 Oct, 13:37

Intense bombardments, mass displacements and lack of assured humanitarian pauses have forced the postponement of the second-dose polio vaccination in northern Gaza, which aimed to reach over 119 000 children under ten years.

Having a significant number of children miss out on their second vaccine dose will seriously jeopardize efforts to stop the transmission of poliovirus in Gaza.

We continue to call for an immediate ceasefire.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

WHO and partners transferred 14 critical patients and 11 companions from Kamal Adwan Hospital to Al-Shifa Hospital - as part of a two day mission, amid hostilities and access restrictions, which forced the team to stay at Kamal Adwan hospital over night with heavy bombardment in the vicinity of the hospital. This was a fourth attempt to reach Kamal Adwan.

Despite an initial agreement, the delivery of critical medical supplies, blood, and fuel, which are essential for keeping Kamal Adwan Hospital operational, were denied just a few hours before the mission departure.

The health situation in northern #Gaza is horrific, with precarious access to essential health care.

Health care continues to be attacked and hospitals starved of supplies and fuel, while WHO’s ability to regularly reach health facilities is severely compromised due to consistent mission delays and denials.

We urge for a sustained and safe humanitarian access. Ceasefire!

I returned this morning from Kigali, where I witnessed firsthand Rwanda’s response to the Marburg outbreak. We’re pleased that there have been no new cases and deaths in the past six days; and I could see the outbreak is being managed under strong leadership.

But we are dealing with one of the world’s most dangerous viruses, and continued vigilance is essential.

WHO will continue to support the government. Enhanced surveillance, contact tracing and infection prevention and control measures must continue at scale until the outbreak is declared over.

The oral vaccination campaign that started in August has now been interrupted by the escalation in violence.

The solution to the suffering of people in Lebanon is not aid, but peace.

The total number of children who received a second dose of polio vaccine in central Gaza after two days of vaccination is 156,943. The vaccination continues today.

At the same time, 128,121 children received vitamin A supplements.

We call for the humanitarian pauses to continue to be respected.

We call for a ceasefire and peace.

Encouraging news from Rwanda: world's first clinical trial for #Marburg virus disease treatment started today, as a result of WHO’s partnership with the Ministry of Health.

The trial involves testing the safety and efficacy of Remdesivir—a drug against viruses already used to treat COVID-19, and MBP091—a special antibody designed to fight Marburg virus.

This trial is the result of two years’ work by nearly 200 researchers, developers, ministry of health officials and partners globally and from 17 African countries at risk of outbreaks of filoviruses such as Ebola and Marburg.

Vielen Dank, Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz, for your personal engagement and commitment to #InvestInWHO.

We welcome Germany's commitment to fund WHO with $400 million over the next four years, including more than $260 million in new voluntary funding.

We are deeply grateful for your leadership to mobilize countries to sustainably finance WHO, and to co-host the Investment Round and the #WHS2024 Signature Event.

Prior to the event, the Chancellor and I used the opportunity to touch base on WHO’s work in humanitarian crises, as well as the ongoing #PandemicAccord negotiations.

Thank you, Chancellor, for making the 'All for Health, #HealthForAll' slogan real!
