🤬 Until now, videos in channels were displayed in exactly the same format they were uploaded, often requiring users to wait and download gigabytes just to watch a short clip ☹️

😎 If I had to give one piece of advice to people in their 20s who want to build something great, it would be: “Never drink alcohol.” 🍸

🤮 I haven’t drunk alcohol in nearly 20 years, but I’ve seen many successful people ruin themselves with it. Alcohol clouds your mental clarity and intuition for days after consumption. While it might lift your mood temporarily, it’s like taking out a loan — you’ll pay it back with interest. The short-term pleasure brings long-term misery 😵‍💫

🍔 I know it’s hard not to yield to social pressure: humans have evolved to copy the behaviors of those around them. But the habits of the majority are self-destructive — most people around us drink alcohol, eat fast food, and have passive lifestyles. And that’s fine. If you want to achieve something extraordinary, however, you’ll boost your chances by keeping both your mind and body healthy 😼

3) Development

this is a phase every programmer loves, including me! :) during this stage, one or multiple engineers start to build the entire system using a chosen programming language. the requirements and high-level architecture design usually serve as input for this phase. not to mention, during this stage, it’s common to establish coding guidelines for the project or company. this is important because you’ll likely have more than one engineer involved, leading to different strategies and shortcuts to get to market faster—this is known as technical debt.

what is technical debt?

technical debt is a concept in software development that reflects the implied cost of additional rework caused by choosing an easier (but limited) solution now instead of using a better solution that would take longer.

4) Testing

this phase might come after development, but the reality is that testing starts during development to automate some aspects. generally, in this stage, we check each requirement to ensure it functions as intended. if any defects are found, they are assigned to a developer to fix.

testing involves not only verifying the new functionality but also ensuring that other parts of the system still work as planned, which is why we start testing during development.

there are different types of testing, including:

- Unit Testing: testing individual components or functions.

- Integration Testing: testing how multiple components work together.

- System Testing: testing the complete, integrated system.

- Acceptance Testing: validating the system against user requirements and business needs.

- Performance Testing: validating system responsiveness, speed, stability, etc.

5) Maintenance

the last phase in the SDLC is maintenance, which comes after deployment. however, i plan to cover the deployment topic in a different post.

maintenance, as the name suggests, is about keeping the product free from unwanted activities or behaviors. in other words, it’s about providing support for the product you’ve delivered. during this phase, you might receive bug reports that weren’t found during development and testing, or you may need to address new versions or vulnerabilities in the technologies you use.

you've often heard me say, "build small projects to learn quickly," whether to pick up a new technology or show your skills on a resume. but what if you want to go beyond that? what if you're ready to build a serious product and put it out there for the world to use?

that’s where this new series comes in. i’m gonna walk you through how to build high-quality software that's production-ready. yes, am talking about the software development life cycle (SDLC) the step-by-step approach to turning your idea into a fully functional piece of software.

now, SDLC covers different stages or you can say phases, each building on the last. skipping any of them could mean trouble down the line (yes, i’m looking at you, testing-avoiders 😂). so let's break it down, starting with the first stage.

1) Requirements

to build a software people actually want to use, you need to understand what your customer really needs, not just what you think would be cool. this means identifying client needs and clearly listing them out.

the output of this stage? a detailed plan of how your application will look and behave: what elements go where, what color to use, and how the application should function etc..
usually, this is where a product manager or product owner steps in to define these details.

2) Software Design / Architecture

next comes software design or architecture, don’t mix this up with UI/UX design. this phase is all about the structure of the software. you’ll be deciding on the technologies to use, how complex it is, and choosing the right tools for the job. think of it as the blueprint that sets the foundation for everything else.

NOTE:
software architecture involves making key structural choices that are costly to change later, so try to get it right the first time!

typically, this responsibility falls on engineers, either a senior software engineer or a team of experienced devs. by the end of this phase, you’ll have a detailed software design ready to go.

Do you know about WebGPU?

so I’ve been thinking about it and recently took a deep dive into the technology. it’s not really new, but compared to all the hype around things like ChatGPT and LLMs, WebGPU hasn’t gotten as much attention lately. so let me tell you what I’ve learned so far.

At a high level, WebGPU is all about using GPU power directly from the web. You might be familiar with WebGL, which is great for rendering 3D graphics, but WebGPU takes it a step further. In the modern day, GPUs have gotten way more powerful and complex, and each operating system has its own native graphics API:

windows → DirectX
Linux → Vulkan
MacOs → Metal

the problem is that each of these APIs has a different structure and way of communicating, making it tricky for developers who want to build cross-platform apps. that’s where WebGPU steps in. It’s designed to make things easier by providing a common API that lets you write code closer to what native APIs offer. basically, you write it once, and it works everywhere.

but there’s more to it. one of the biggest advantages is that WebGPU supports general-purpose computation on the GPU. this is a game-changer because it means you can use the GPU not just for graphics but for all kinds of data processing. unlike WebGL, which was mostly about rendering, WebGPU lets you do things like machine learning, physics simulations, image processing, and more.

imagine running a complex machine-learning model or a real-time physics simulation directly in your browser. that’s the kind of potential we’re talking about.

That’s it for today. I just wanted to share a bit of what I’ve learned because i think this technology deserves more attention. if you’re curious and want to start experimenting, I highly encourage you to check out Google’s code labs—they have great tutorials to get you started.

they’re really easy to follow, and three.js is even working on their own shader language (tsl), which is pretty exciting.
