AAU Libraries Hosts Training in Generative AI, AI Ethics

In an endeavor to close the AI skills gap, AAU Libraries, in collaboration with the University’s E-learning Unit, offered a daylong up-skilling training course to the university’s academic staff and postgraduate students to increase the adoption of Artificial Intelligence in research and scholarship.

The training facilitated by Dr Melkamu Beyene, Director of AAU Libraries and Dr Temtim Assefa, E-learning Unit Coordinator at AAU, also included emerging ethical issues as they relate to AI and the deployment of technological mechanisms to detect ethical violations.

In particular, the trainers said, Turnitin, a leading provider of technology solutions in academic integrity to which AAU has a subscription, has enhanced AI writing detection capacity and will help faculty in the provision of enhanced Similarity Reports to help them identify when content generated by AI writing tools may have been submitted.

Addis Ababa University Launches Presidential Scholarship Scheme

Presidential scholarships have been awarded to 200 first-time freshmen with the highest AAU Entrance Exam scores at a special inaugural event. The fee waiver scholarships will mean awardees will not have to go through cost-sharing procedures.

Dr. Samuel Kifle, the Acting President of Addis Ababa University, told the winners that the university recognizes and rewards those who demonstrate exceptional talent in keeping with its strategic goal of maintaining its high standards as Ethiopia’s most prestigious university.

The president further said scholarship holders must meet the maintenance requirement of a GPA of 3.25 to be eligible for continued assistance, adding the university also assists outstanding students admitted to its various graduate programs.

First-in-Africa International Sign Language Research Conference Kicks off in Addis Ababa

The 15th International Conference on Sign Language Research, hosted by Addis Ababa University in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, is underway at the Inter-Luxury Hotel in Addis Ababa.

Dr. Ergoge Tesfaye, the Minister of Women and Social Affairs asserted that the event serves as a platform for sharing experiences and knowledge aimed at advancing and improving sign language.

Dr. Ergoge further emphasized that sign language is not merely a tool for communication; it also plays a vital role in fostering cultural heritage and safeguarding the rights of individuals with disabilities.

The minister also highlighted Ethiopia's commitment to providing high-quality sign language education to individuals with hearing impairment and hearing loss, adding significant efforts are being made in Ethiopia to ensure that the deaf and hard-of-hearing have access to education and employment opportunities.

For his part, Dr. Samuel Kifle, the Interim President of Addis Ababa University, remarked that the conference will offer valuable research, experiences, and insights that will help to raise the quality of sign language education.

Emergency Medical Center of Black Lion Hospital Partially
The Black Lion Specialized Hospital Emergency Medical center was partially inaugurated in the presence of Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Education and Addis Ababa University Chancellor Professor Berhanu Nega, AAU President Dr Samuel Kifle and other guests.

Addis Ababa University President Dr Samuel Kifle stated that efforts are being made to make the Black Lion Specialized Hospital a center of medical excellence, adding that the partially operational Emergency Medical Center will significantly improve its medical services.

In addition, he indicated that the center will play a significant role in the efforts to make Ethiopia a medical tourism destination.

More than 1.2 billion birr is needed to make the center fully operational and it was noted that the cooperation of stakeholders is crucial.

Black Lion Specialized Hospital has been providing emergency medical services to 14,000 to 15,000 citizens annually.

የጥቁር አንበሳ ስፔሻላይዝድ ሆስፒታልን የህክምና ልህቀት ማዕከል ለማድረግ እየተሰራ መሆኑን የገለጹት የአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፕሬዚደንት ሳሙኤል ክፍሌ (ዶ/ር)፣ በከፊል ስራ የጀመረው የጥቁር አንበሳ ስፔሻላይዝድ ሆስፒታል የድንገተኛ ህክምና ማዕከል የድንገተኛ ህክምና አገልግሎቱን በከፍተኛ ደረጃ እንደሚያሻሽልም ገልጸዋል።

ከዚህ ባሻገር ማዕከሉ ኢትዮጵያን የህክምና ቱሪዝም መዳረሻ ለማድረግ በሚደረገው ጥረት ውስጥ ትርጉም ያለው ድርሻ እንደሚኖረውም አመልክተዋል።

የጤና ሚኒስትር ዶክተር መቅደስ ዳባ፣ የትምህርት ሚኒስትርና የአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ቻንስለር ፕሮፌሰር ብርሃኑ ነጋ፣ የአአዩ ፕሬዚደንት ሳሙኤል ክፍሌን (ዶ/ር) ጨምሮ ሌሎች እንግዶች በተገኙበት ነው በከፊል ማዕከሉ ተመርቆ ስራ የጀመረው።

ማዕከሉን በሙሉ አቅም ወደ ስራ ለማስገባት ከ1.2 ቢሊዮን ብር በላይ የሚያስፈልግ ሲሆን የባለድርሻ አካላት ርብርብም ወሳኝ እንደሆነ ተጠቁሟል።

ጥቁር አንበሳ ስፔሻላይዝድ ሆስፒታል በዓመት ከ14ሺህ እስከ 15ሺህ ለሚደርሱ ዜጐች የድንገተኛ ህክምና አገልግሎት እየሰጠ ቆይቷል።

Addis Ababa University to Host Africa’s First International Sign Language Research Conference in January

Addis Ababa University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, will host the 15th International Sign Language Research Conference, the first of its kind in Africa. More than 600 international speakers and participants are expected to attend.

The conference is expected to provide policymakers with research findings in the field of sign language, while also contributing to the government’s efforts to increase the participation of citizens in political, economic and social affairs in Ethiopia. In this regard, the university is playing its part in the efforts to realize an equitable Ethiopia.

The university’s hosting of the conference supports Ethiopia’s efforts to become a destination for international conferences.

Addis Ababa University was selected to host the conference in recognition of its significant contributions to the field over the past 15 years.

ማሳሰቢያ፡-
1. አዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ አቡነ-ጴጥሮስ አደባባይ አካባቢ በሚገኘው የጋዜጠኝነትና ብዙሀን መገናኛ ህንጻ ለማከራዬት ይፈልጋል፡፡

2. ተጫራቾች የጨረታ ሠነዱን ከታች በተገለፀው አድራሻ ታህሳስ 04 ቀን 2017 ዓ.ም. እስከ 4፡00 ሰአት ድረስ ጨረታውን ለያዘው ሰው ማሰረከብ ወይም ለዚህ ጨረታ በዘጋጀው ሳጥን ማስገባት ይችላሉ፡፡ ዘግይተው የቀረቡ የጨረታ መልሶች ተቀባይነት የላቸውም፡፡ በጨረታው ላይ ለመገኘት በፈለጉ ተጫራቾች ወይም የተጫራቾች ህጋዊ ወኪሎቻቸው በተገኙበት ታህሳስ 04 ቀን 2017 ዓ.ም በ4፡30 ሰአት ይከፈታል::

3. ከዚህ የጨረታ ሰነድ ጋር የታደሰ ንግድ ፈቃድ ፣ የተጨማሪ እሴት ታክስ (vat) ሰርተፍኬት እና ቲን ሰርተፍኬት መያያዝ አለበት፡፡

4. በአንድ ንግድ ፈቃድ መጫረት የሚቻለው ለአንድ ክፍል ብቻ ነው፡፡

5. በጨረታው ቅድሚያ ክፍያ ለስድስት (6) ወር እና ከዚያ በላይ ቅድሚያ ክፍያ ለሚሰጡ ድርጅቶች ቅድሚያ ይሰጠቸዋል፡፡

6. በጨረታው ለትልልቅ ካሬ ቦታዎች ማህበር ላላቸው ተጫራቾች ቅድሚያ ይሰጣቸዋል፡፡

7. የጨረታ አሸናፊዎች የኪራይ ውል መዋዋል የሚችሉት ለጨረታ ባስገቡት የንግድ ፈቃድ ስም ብቻ ነው፡፡

8. በጨረታ ያሸነፉበትን ክፍል በምንም ዓይነት ለሌላ ወገን ስም ማዞርም ሆነ ተከራይቶ ማከራየት የማይቻል ሲሆን ይህንን ለማድረግ የሚሞክሩ ተጫራቾች ከጨረታ ውጪ እንደሚሆኑ እና የኪራይ ውሉ እንደሚሰረዝ ለማሳሰብ እንወዳለን፡፡

9. ፍላጎት ያላቸው ተጫራቾች የተዘጋጀውን የጨረታ ሰነድ ለመግዛት ከዚህ በታች በተገላፀው አድራሻ የማይመለስ 500.00 (አምስት መቶ ብር) በኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ ሂሳብ ቁጥር 1000087392067 ገቢ በማድረግ የባንክ ደረሰኝ ይዘው በመምጣት የጨረታ ሰነዱን መግዛት ይችላሉ፡፡

10. ተጫራቾች በጨረታው ለመሳተፍ የጨረታ ማስከበሪያ መጠን ብር 100,000.00 (አንድ መቶ ሺ ብር) በሲፒኦ ወይም በሁኔታ ላይ ያልተመሰረተ የባንክ ዋስትና አያይዘው ማቅረብ አለባቸው፡፡

11. ይህ የጨረታ መጋበዣ ሰነድ የሚያካትታቸው ዋና የሚከራዩ ቦታዎች ዝርዝር እና የሚከራይ ቦታውን የሚያሳይ ዲዛይን ይሆናል፡፡

12. ይህ የኪራይ አገልግሎት ጨረታ ታሳቢ የሚያደርገው በአገር ውስጥ ለሚፈፀም የአገልግሎት ሽያጭ (የምክር አገልግሎት አይጨምርም) የሚውል መደበኛ የጨረታ ሰነድ ይሆናል፡፡

13. ዩኒቨርሲቲው የተሻለ አማራጭ ካገኘ ጨረታውን በሙሉም ሆነ በከፊል የመሰረዝ መብቱ የተጠበቀ ነው፡፡

1. አዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርስቲ ከላይ በሎት የተጠቀሱትን እቃዎች በግልጽ ጨረታ አወዳድሮ መሸጥ ይፈልጋል፡፡

2. እቃዎቹ የሚገኙበት አድራሻ 6 ኪሎ አዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርስቲ ንብረት አስተዳደር ክፍል ሲሆን ለመግዛት ፍላጎትና ብቃት ያላቸዉ ተጫራቾች በታሸገ ኢንቨሎፕ የጨረታ ሰነድ ለአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርስቲ እንድታቀርቡ ተጋብዛችኋል፡፡

3. ጨረታዉ በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርስቲ ግዥና ንብረት አስተዳደር መመሪያ ሥነ-ሥርዓት መሰረት ይፈፀማል::

4. ፍላጎት ያላቸው ተጫራቾች ከዚህ በታች በተራ ቁጥር 7 (ሀ/ በተገለፀው አድራሻ የጨረታ ሰነዱን የማይመለስ ብር 400.00 (አራት መቶ ብር) በዩኒቨርስቲዉ የኢትዮጲያ ንግድ ባንክ አካዉንት ቁጥር 1000087392067 ገቢ በማድረግና ደረሰኙን ይዘዉ በመቅረብ ስለእቃዎቹ ሙሉ ዝርዝር የያዘዉን ሰነድ መውሰድ ይችላሉ፡፡

5. የጨረታ ሰነዱን ከዚህ በታች በተራ ቁጥር 7 (ለ) በተገለጸዉ አድራሻ እስከ ታህሳስ 8 ቀን 2017 ዓ.ም እሰከ ጠዋቱ 4፡00 ሰዓት ድረስ ማስገባት ይችላሉ፡፡ ዘግይተዉ የሚቀርቡ የጨረታ ሰነዶች ተቀባይነት የላቸዉም፡፡ ጨረታዉ ተጫራቾች ወይም ህጋዊ ወኪሎቻቸው በተገኙበት በቁጥር 7 (ሐ) በተጠቀሰዉ አድራሻ ታህሳስ 8 ቀን 2017 ዓ.ም ጠዋት 4፡30 ሰዓት ይከፈታል፡፡

6. ተጫራቾች ከዚህ በታች በተራ ቄጥር 7 (ለ) በተገለጸዉ አድራሻ ታህሳስ 8 ቀን 2017 ዓ.ም ጠዋት 4፡00 ሰዓት ወይም በፊት በግዥ እና ንብረት አስተዳደር ዳይሬክቶሬት ቢሮ በተዘጋጀዉ የጨረታ ሳጥን ዉስጥ የጨረታ ሰነዱን ከጨረታ መዝጊያ ጊዜ በፊት ማቅረብ አለባቸዉ፡፡ ተጋባዥ ተጫራቾች በጨረታዉ ለመሳተፍ የጨረታ ማስከበሪያ መጠን ለሎት 1 ብር 20,000.00 (ሀያ ሺህ ብር) ለሎት 2 ብር 10,000.00 (አስር ሺ ብር) በሲፒኦ ወይም በሁኔታ ላይ ባልተመሰረተ የባንክ ዋስትና በዩኒቨርስቲዉ ስም አሰርተዉ አያይዘዉ ማቅረብ አለባቸዉ፡፡ በተጨማሪም ጨረታዉ ከተከፈተ በኋላ ማንኛዉም ተጫራች ከዉድድሩ ከወጣ የተያዘዉ የጨረታ ማስከበሪያ የሚወረስ ይሆናል፡፡

7. ሀ/ ሰነዶቹ የሚሸጡበት አድራሻ አዲስ አባባ ዩኒቨርስቲ ግዥ አስተዳደር ዳይሬክቶሬት ቢሮ ቁጥር 313

Information on the AAU Graduate Admission Test (GAT)

1.Applicants are required to take the AAU’s Graduate Admission Test (GAT) and meet the minimum passing requirements.
2.Information about the GAT can be obtained from the Institute for Educational Research’s Telegram channel, Testing Center_IER_AAU, accessible through the link https://t.me/aauGAT
3.The application and test dates for the Graduate Admission Test (GAT) are September 05 to September 11, 2024. Priority will be given to those who register for the GAT as early as possible.
4.To register for the GAT, please follow the steps below:
-Visit https://Portal.aau.edu.et [Open]
-Click on the exam application
-Fill out the Test Taker Registration form
-Upload a passport-size photo of the test taker
-Click submit
-Copy the generated number
-The GAT testing fee of 1000 birr should be paid using Tele Birr. Foreign applicants are required to pay the equivalent of USD 50 in Ethiopian Birr.
-Once payment is made, please download and print your Admission Ticket, which is necessary for admission to the exam hall.

Addis Ababa University (AAU) has opened up the call for the academic year of 2024/25 second semester in Masters (regular and extension) as well as PhD programs listed on the link https://admission.aau.edu.et/GraduatePrograms. Applicants are required to follow the steps described as follows:

The AAU Graduate Admission Test (GAT)
1.Applicants must first take the University Graduate Admission Test (GAT) and fulfill the minimum requirement to pass the exam.

On 27 November 2024, a Russian higher education delegation led by Dr Irina Abramova, Director of the Institute of Africa at the Russian Academy of Sciences, met and held talks with an AAU team headed by President Dr Samuel Kifle.

The two parties conferred on matters of partnership in science and technology fields.

Information on the AAU Graduate Admission Test (GAT)

1.Applicants are required to take the AAU’s Graduate Admission Test (GAT) and meet the minimum passing requirements.
2.Information about the GAT can be obtained from the Institute for Educational Research’s Telegram channel, Testing Center_IER_AAU, accessible through the link https://t.me/aauGAT
3.The application and test dates for the Graduate Admission Test (GAT) are September 05 to September 11, 2024. Priority will be given to those who register for the GAT as early as possible.
4.To register for the GAT, please follow the steps below:
-Visit https://Portal.aau.edu.et [Open]
-Click on the exam application
-Fill out the Test Taker Registration form
-Upload a passport-size photo of the test taker
-Click submit
-Copy the generated number
-The GAT testing fee of 1000 birr should be paid using Tele Birr. Foreign applicants are required to pay the equivalent of USD 50 in Ethiopian Birr.
-Once payment is made, please download and print your Admission Ticket, which is necessary for admission to the exam hall.

AAU and Awash Bank Ink MoU for Knowledge Sharing, Talent Development

Addis Ababa University and Awash Bank signed a partnership to promote strategy-driven capacity development and create opportunities for their professionals on the 20th of November 2024.

Accordingly, AAU’s College of Business and Economics will provide the expertise and skills necessary to further capacitate Awash Bank S in line with the pace of liberalization in the financial sector which would require local banks are able to compete with their foreign peers.

Speaking at the signing event, AAU president Dr Samuel Kifle said, in cooperation with Awash Bank, the flagship university will develop an advanced curriculum focusing on the emerging needs of the banking industry, invite Awash Bank professionals to share their experiences; send faculty in externship to invest their knowledge in the industry; and work on common beneficiary projects including advancing technology.

Dr Samuel Kifle further said AAU has entered into solid long-term collaboration and strategic co-operation agreements with players in the financial industry as Ethiopia’s first autonomous public university, adding the deal with Awash Bank represents a move from plan to action.

Mr. Tadesse Gemeda, Chief Wholesale Banking Officer of Awash Bank, for his part said Awash Bank S.C will provide state-of-the art banking services to the university community and work together in key topics identified for cooperation in areas of the bank’s strategic and R&D needs.

AAU keen to Forge Ties with Brazilian Institutions in Sports, Leisure and Health

AAU launched a seminar under the title “BRICS in the Fields of Physical Activity, Health, Tourism, and Leisure: Opportunities for Integration between Brazil and Ethiopia” at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies meeting hall on November 18, 2024.

Speaking on the significance of the event, Dr. Alem Mebrat Kiflu, the Post Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Sports Science, said the seminar was planned to foster ties between Brazil and Ethiopia in sports and health, adding the event also offered an important opportunity to find ways to address the scholarly publishing challenges facing the Department’s doctoral students.

For his part, Professor Ricardo R. Uvinha, Secretary General of the BRICS Council of Exercise and Sports Science, said the Council was formed to tackle specific concerns of member nations in matters of health and wellness of their citizens. The professor further stated that the BRICSCESS signifies a global alternative coordination of likeminded nations in the promotion of population health through exercise, physical activity, sports, and healthy lifestyles.
Fostering ties with Brazil has immense strategic significance considering the Latin American nation’s global position and legacy in the sports arena. Historical records show that  Brazil held the inaugural BRICSCESS conference in December 2017 under the theme Sports Mega Events and Health Promotion: Policies and Legacies in Exercise and Sports Science, after it hosted several other mega sporting events including the 5th International Military Sports Council World Games (2011), the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Confederations Cup (2013), the FIFA World Cup (2014), the Olympic Games Rio (2016), and the Paralympic Games Rio (2016), among others.

AAU and Moscow Technical University Agree to Bolster, Expand Bilateral Ties

On November 7, 2024, a Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI) delegation met and deliberated with AAU president, Dr Samuel Kifle, on ways of deepening and expanding strategic cooperation in key areas of science and technology in which the Russian Federation has made significant strides.

“We treasure our partnerships with Russian universities in the fields of mining, space, engineering, physics, and mathematics, where Russia has demonstrated global leadership “, the AAU president assured the Russian partners.

There is much Ethiopian universities can learn from their Russian counterparts, Dr Samuel further said, citing the Eastern European nation’ s model of higher education curriculum development which aligns with its culture, history, economy, industry and national aspirations.

Dr Samuel said there is further need for bilateral cooperation in the various subfields of medicine, considering the significant Russian advances in healthcare from which Ethiopia’s health system can draw experiences.

For her part, Dr Irina Sidorkina, the Vice-Rector at MTUCI said the Russian university is a multidisciplinary institution prepared to share its expertise and capabilities with Addis Ababa University.

AAU Signs Partnership with Russia’s Oryel University to Cooperate on Education and Science

Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Oryel State University in the Russian Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on multifaceted educational and scientific areas on the 8th of November 2024.

The partnership agreement was signed at the AAU main campus, Sidist Kilo, by Dr Samuel Kifle, Interim President of AAU, and Dr Lyudmila Vladimirovna, on behalf of Professor Galina M. Zomiteva, Acting Rector of Oryel State University.

The pact between the two institutions focuses on joint research and advanced training in the humanities, social and natural sciences.

Student and staff exchange is also an important area covered by the agreement.

The Ministry of Education has endorsed the Five Million Ethiopian Coders initiative and directed the University to facilitate training for academic staff and students. The program consists of the following four modules:

1.Programming Fundamentals
2.Data Science Fundamentals
3.Android Kotlin Developer Fundamentals
4. AI Fundamentals

Data Science Fundamentals and AI Fundamentals are mandatory for all staff and students.
The other courses may be taken based on individual interest. The program is self-paced and online, with an expected completion period of 7-8 weeks.

School of Commerce Hosts Public Lecture on Ethiopia’s Capital Market Ecosystem

The School of Commerce, in partnership with the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) and the Ethiopian Capital Markets Authority (ECMA), organized a Public Lecture on Ethiopia’s capital market ecosystem on November 8, 2024.
Solomon Markos, PhD, the head of the School of Commerce, stated in an interview that the purpose of the public lecture is to involve students, faculty, and  scholars  to significantly contribute to the capital market ecosystem as prospective investors, service providers, and issuers.

“Through this initiative, we aim to deepen their understanding of how the capital markets operate and demonstrate how they can actively participate in and contribute to the ecosystem”, Dr Solomon said.
He further stated that the lecture aims to enhance understanding of the regulatory framework that oversees the Ethiopian capital market and to promote a dialogue regarding the role of the AAU School of Commerce as a significant stakeholder in the engagement and advancement of the capital market.

Ms Yodit Kassa, Chief Business Development Officer at Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX), for her part noted that ESX plays a major role in facilitating access to capital and providing  support for capital allocation in a manner that fuels Ethiopia’s economic growth.

Ms Yodit emphasized that ESX will enable mobilization of financial resources for both public and private sector institutions while providing investors a reliable platform to invest in an efficient environment.

Visiting Deputy Minister Calls on AAU to Join Russian-African University Network

Russian Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, Konstantin Mogilevsky, visited Addis Ababa University, and conferred with President Dr Samuel Kifle. The two sides held deliberations on strategic areas for cooperation that included technology, health, space science, mining and energy.

During the discussions, the Russian minister extended an invitation to AAU to join the Russian- African University network.

The network is a Russian initiative that brings together Russian and African universities as development partners engaged in educational and scientific cooperation as well as joint infrastructural projects.

Joint MA/PhD programs, academic mobility ventures, intercultural dialogue, as well as joint research and consulting are some of the areas of cooperation between Russian and African universities forming the consortium.

The network boasts 61 Russian universities and 31 higher education institutions from 11 African countries.

AAU Partners with UAE’s Global Studies University to Conduct Joint Research, Develop Curriculum

Addis Ababa University (AAU) and the Global Studies University (GSU) of the United Arab Emirates signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to collaborate in curriculum development, research as well as student and staff exchange.

The MoA was signed at the AAU main campus on the 5th of November 2024 by Dr Samuel Kifle, President of AAU, and Distinguished Professor Salah M. Hassan, Chancellor of Global Studies University (GSU) and Dean of the Africa Institute (GSU), Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates.

The new partnership opens avenues for AAU students aspiring for student exchange opportunities in global and African studies while faculty may harness the pathway to forge research partnerships in the social sciences and the humanities.

In particular, the Africa Institute of the GSU is poised to become an important center for cooperation between the two universities on teaching, research, and the documentation of histories, cultures, and peoples from Africa.

Youth Panel Discussion on Conflict, Reconciliation and Peacebuilding

On November 1, 2024, students from various divisions of Addis Ababa University participated in a panel discussion on the role of youth in conflict resolution and peace building, featuring a senior official from the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission and a researcher from Social Net Consulting.

Mr. Abreham Kebede, the head of project coordination at the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, said that to enhance the credibility of the national consultation, training focused on capacity building has been conducted with diverse community groups, and a significant number of the nation’s youth are being encouraged to participate.

Mr. Abraham indicated that the National Dialogue Commission is engaging the youth of Ethiopia in efforts to foster peace and stability.

He mentioned that the youth are structured within the districts from which they are elected, demonstrating significant engagement in identifying and analyzing minor security issues affecting both society and the youth.

“They subsequently present their findings to the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, ” Mr Abraham further said.

Ato Tesfaye Salomon, a Senior Researcher and Consultant at Social Net Consulting, emphasized that for conflict to yield a positive and constructive result, the approach to conflict resolution must treat all ideas impartially and without prejudice.

He said the process should aim to guide the majority towards a conciliatory position, and it is anticipated that the youth will be instrumental in achieving this success.

Addis Ababa University and Hainan University Ink MOU to Boost Cooperation in Research, Staff and Student Exchange

Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Hainan University (HNU) of China signed an agreement to cooperate in key areas of mutual interest on the 28th of October 2024.

The agreement sets the stage for a strategic partnership focusing on joint research, education, staff and student exchange as well as community engagement.

The pact will extend to include collaboration in the exchange of scholarly publications and scientific information.

The MOU stipulates that the cooperation is for an initial period of five years which may be renewed subject to an expression of mutual interest.

Dr Samuel Kifle, Interim President of Addis Ababa University, and Professor LUO Qingming, President of Hainan University, signed the partnership agreement.

Turkish Agency Makes Donations of Feminine Hygiene Products

On October 30, 2024, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TiKA) donated reusable sanitary pads to AAU, helping to provide hygiene essentials to female undergraduate students who may not afford personal care products.

The donation is hoped to help address “period poverty” defined as the lack of access to safe and hygienic menstrual products.

Following a vote of thanks to the Turkish Agency for the generous donation, the president of AAU, Dr Samuel Kifle underscored efforts being made by the university’s Gender Office to ensure the inability to purchase hygiene products does not pose a significant barrier to the academic progression of female students.

The Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Dr. Ergoge Tesfaye, who attended the donation ceremony, stated that access to sanitary pads for women has significantly improved, adding female students in higher education have not only been able to concentrate on their academic pursuits, but there have also been notable advancements in their health, social interactions, and personal development.

Minister Ergoge further said that the women’s Reusable Hygienic Pads, provided with the assistance of the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency, are designed for reuse over a period of up to two years.

Studies report that sanitary pads make female students feel more confident and significantly reduce their class absenteeism.

AAU, Wollo University Ink Deal with Ministry of Mines to Boost Research and Development

The Ministry of Mines and the Universities of Addis Ababa and Wollo signed a MOU for cooperation in key areas related to the minerals sector on the 29th of October 2024.

H.E. Minister of Mines Habtamu Tegegne outlined six different projects related to research, capacity building and documentation to be implemented in coordination with the higher education institutions for which the Ministry has committed 733 million birr.

Highlighting the significance of the partnership, the AAU president, Dr Samuel Kifle, said the parties shared a vision to keep the nation at the forefront of key minerals supply as a backbone of the economy.

Working in partnership with the mining industry will help AAU to deliver the skills and innovation vital to realize the potential benefits from the minerals sector to the nation’s economic development, the AAU President further said, adding the partnership aligns with the university’s core mission of sustainable development.

On October 22, 2024, the Industry Linkage and Technology Transfer Office of Addis Ababa University, in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, hosted a 10-day training for university students at the Eshetu Chole Hall.

Solomon Kiros, PhD, the Director for University-Industry Linkage and Technology Transfer, articulated that a memorandum of understanding has been signed between JICA, AAU, and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology.

He said the agreement aims to introduce capacity-building initiatives focused on innovation, incubation, and startups.

He noted that the program is designed to provide students with technical training, thereby significantly enhancing their entrepreneurial mindset and fostering their development as business-oriented graduates.

AAU and Institute for Cooperation and Language Agree to Promote Portuguese Language and Culture

Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Camões Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua (Camões — Institute for Cooperation and Language) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish conditions for the promotion and provision of the Portuguese language and culture studies at AAU.

According to the agreement, AAU will promote Portuguese studies through courses, conferences, meetings, publications, exchanges and research.

AAU will Further ensure the logistical conditions necessary for the proper professional functioning of teaching the Portuguese language and culture, as well as the provision of other needs such as the availability of working space and access to libraries.

For its part, Camões — Institute for Cooperation and Language will be committed to bear all the financial costs to run the program, provide scientific and pedagogical support, promote scientific and cultural events at AAU, and consider awarding scholarships with priority being given to Ethiopian candidates wishing to pursue studies in the field of Portuguese Language and Culture Education.

The MoU will be effective as of the date of its signing having an intended duration of three years with possible renewal, modification or adaption in the interest of both signatories in accordance with the legal status corresponding to it.

AAU, Tianjin University of Technology and Education Leaders Hold Talks on Further Strengthening Strategic Ties


A high level Tianjin University of Technology and Education (TUTE) delegation, led by Professor Zhang Jingang, met and held deliberations with the presidential team of Addis Ababa University on enhancing collaboration in science and technology education at the President’s office on the 24th of October 2024.

Samuel Kifle (PhD), President of AAU, welcomed and told the delegation that AAU holds in high regard the bilateral cooperation with Tianjin University of Technology and Education.

AAU is keen to have both staff and student exchange programs in the bilateral agreement, the President also said.

Professor Zhang Jingang, Chairman of the University Council of TUTE, stated that the objective of the visiting delegation is to deeper the cooperation especially in the areas of construction and research.

Jeilu Oumer (PhD), Academic Vice President of AAU, for his part said the cooperation between the two universities is set to prove fruitful, citing as aa success story the Confucius Institute in AAU and the rising demand for Chinese language education it is trying to meet.

The AVP added that AAU has conducted reviews of it’s undergraduate engineering and technology programs and hopes that TUTE would contribute to enriching the flagship university ‘s revised offerings.

AAU and Institute for Cooperation and Language Agree to Promote Portuguese Language and Culture

Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Camões Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua (Camões — Institute for Cooperation and Language) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish conditions for the promotion and provision of the Portuguese language and culture studies at AAU.

According to the agreement, AAU will further promote Portuguese studies through courses, conferences, meetings, publications, exchanges and research.

AAU will. Further ensure the logistical conditions necessary for the proper professional functioning of teaching the Portuguese language and culture, as well as the provision of other needs such as the availability of working space and access to libraries.

For its part, Camões — Institute for Cooperation and Language will be committed to bear all the financial costs to run the program, provide scientific and pedagogical support, promote scientific and cultural events at AAU, and consider awarding scholarships with priority being given to Ethiopian candidates wishing to pursue studies in the field of Portuguese Language and Culture Education.

The MoU will be effective as of the date of its signing having an intended duration of three years with possible renewal, modification or adaption in the interest of both signatories in accordance with the legal status corresponding to it.

Samuel Kifle (PhD), Interim President of Addis Ababa University and H.E. Nuno Sampaio, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal signed the agreement at the Office of the AAU President.

ስምምነቱን የፈረሙት የአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፕሬዝዳንት ሳሙኤል ክፍሌ ( ፒ.ኤች.ዲ) እና በፖርቹጋል የውጭ ጉዳይና ትብብር ዋና ፀሀፊ ክቡር ኑኖ ሳሞፒዮ ናቸው።

ስምምነቱ በትምህርት ዲፕሎማሲው ዘርፈ ብዙ የትብብር መስኮችን ጨምሮ በዓለማችን በአራተኛ ደረጃ ብዙ ተናጋሪ ያለውን የፖርቹጋል ቋንቋን በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ለማስተማር የሚያስችል ነው፡፡

አዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በአሁኑ ወቅት ፈረንሳይኛን ጨምሮ ሌሎች አለም አቀፍ ቋንቋዎችን በአጫጭር ኮርስ እንዲሁም በዲግሪ መርሃ ግብሮች በማስተማር ላይ ይገኛል፡፡

Inaugural Reunion 2024: AAU Alumni Reconnect, Reminisce, Reflect

The first ever university-wide reunion brought together an intergenerational community of notable alumni that included Ethiopia’s president, Taye Atsikesilassie, ministers, civic and business leaders and prominent scholars and others from different walks of life.

Divisions of the university hosted their respective alumni over the weekend to share memories and reunite to create an impact. Keynote addresses, talks, and a cocktail reception added color to the festive occasion and the reunion fun.

The FDRE president said AAU holds a special place in the history of Ethiopian higher education and continues to enjoy a position of national and continental respect as a leading institution of higher learning, adding its graduates have made national and international headlines as leading scientists, researchers and distinguished professors. He urged alumni to continue to contribute to further raise the profile and national role of the university as a flagship university.

For his part, President of AAU, Dr Samuel Kifle said, the Alumni Reunion is being celebrated in the aftermath of AAU’s elevated status as the first autonomous public university in Ethiopia. He further said AAU holds its alumni in high esteem and would cherish their continued affiliation and support as active members of the university alumni association.

He also said, in holding the first reunion in its history, AAU has taken an essential first step to reconnect with alumni and chart a new path forward in the assurance of excellence in scholarship and community engagement as enshrined in the university’s new core mission of excellence .

Korean Traditional Music Orchestra of the Blind (KTMOB) Presents Concert Commemorating Ethiopian Veterans of Korean War


The Special Needs Support Centre of Addis Ababa University (AAU) hosted a performance event by a blind South Korean cultural orchestra , comomorating Ethiopian troops that fought in the Korean War about 75 years ago.

The performance was presented under the theme “The 600-Year History of the Korean People Resounds in Ethiopia, an African Country that Participated in the Korean War”, resonating with the song of King Sejong.

The Director of the Orchestra, Mr. Dong-ic Choi, in an exclusive interview said the Korean traditional musical performance event was held at AAU in memory of the 6,037 Ethiopian troops, 121 of whom were killed and 536 wounded.

Mr. Choi added that Ethiopia was the only African country that participated in the War to help maintain Korean peace and stability by deploying its thousands of soldiers when the very survival of Korea was at stake due to the War broke out in 1950.

The director further said , besides the commemorative performance , the orchestra group came to cooperate with and support Ethiopian disabled citizens through advocacy and traditional music.

He added that AAU, as the best university in the country, can help the Orchestra to establish connection with Ethiopian disabled persons.



Mr. Choi further stated that the group tried to show what disabled people can do and contribute for their country independently like others, promoting disabled people.

Yirgashewa Bekele (PhD), director of the Special Needs Support Centre of AAU, for her part, said the purpose of the event was to create awareness regarding disabled persons and their abilities.

She added that the performance, besides commemorating the Ethiopian role in the Korean War, aimed to promote intercultural understanding between the two peoples.

According to Dr. Yirgashewa, the Korean traditional music performance presented by the KTMOB shows what disabled people can do for others without being hindered by their disabilities.

AAU Signs MOU with South Korea’s Yeungnam University for Cooperation in Agricultural Modernization

AAU and Yeungnam University of the Republic of Korea inked a Memorandum of Understanding to promote academic cooperation in teaching, research, and training in areas related to development at the Academic Vice President’s Office on October 15, 2024.

Dr Jeilu Oumer, Academic Vice President of AAU, said Yeungnam University posseses a rich fund of experience in agricultural development from which AAU can draw lessons to transform the nation’s agricultural.sector.

He stated that the agreement between the two universities is in the main focused on rural development and food self-sufficiency and the Korean university has undertaken to cooperate in providing the necessary technology and expertise.

Yeungnam University President, Dr. CHOI oe-chool , for his part, disclosed that his institution will work with Addis Ababa University in key strategic areas of development to assist in Ethiopia’s efforts to achieve socioeconomic transformation

The president further underscored that South Korea and Ethiopia are committed to long-term social, political, and economic ties.
