THE PASSING OF SHAYKH AKRAM ʿABDUL WAHHAB AL-MAWSILI (1954-2025)

Shaykh Akram ʿAbd al-Wahhab al-Mawsili, the shaykh al-muhaddithin of Mosul and a scholar of the highest calibre, passed away last night. He was a polymath and a bastion of sunni scholarship with an incredible interest in preserving and sharing the Iraqi ʿilmi legacy for which he authored massive volumes containing his chains of transmission. Though I personally didn’t spend much time with him, I did have opportunities to be with him in multiple private settings and he was a gentle giant, a man of prophetic character, and a true inheritor of the tradition. May Allah Most High accept him, elevate him, shower him with mercy, and enter him into the highest of stations of Paradise, amin!

My six year old daughter gave me a fatwa the other day to justify her actions. Note that the answer was given during the act and not prior, so that means she already knew the “ruling”…

Her: Well, tickling makes people get happy, and being happy is a sunna!

قال الشيخ الإمام أبو منصور رحمه الله: (إنّ العلماء في هذه الأمّة لإِبانة الأحكام ومعالم الدِّين كالأنبياء المتقدّمين، وكما كان إذا انقرض رسولٌ وبقيت الأحكام وليس فيهم رسول آخر ولم يبق لهم هادٍ ومعلّم جاءهم رسول آخر، كذلك في هذه الأمّة إذا انقرض الفقهاء والأئمة في كلّ عصرٍ أوجبت الضّرورة ظهور قرن آخر إلى قيام الساعة؛ لأنه لا يجوز أن يترك الله تعالى عباده سدىً لا هادي لهم ولا مبيّن للأحكام). لا يكاد يخلو متكلّمٌ من خطأ، ومفكّرٌ من عثرة، وفي البشر خصالُ التسرع، والتوهم، وتمر بهم لحظات يزول فيها الفهم، وأوقات يحصل فيها شتات الذهن.

وهذا النوع من الأخطاء يسهل تداركه وتجنّبه من الأستاذ بالتحضير، وجمع الهم، وتقليل الشواغل قبل الدرس، وحسن الالتجاء لله تعالى، ما دام المعنى مستقرًا في النفس قائمًا في العقل.

THE FIFTEENTH NIGHT OF SHA‘BAN

The night of mid-Sha‘ban is one of the most blessed nights of the islamic calendar; it is a night of special mercy in which the faithful are forgiven, save one with a soiled heart, a heart veiled from the prophetic light and busied by nafs and dunya.

Many fuqaha have written treatises explicating the virtues of this night, including [from amongst the Hanafis]: Muhammad Ibn Tulun al-Salihi (Tahliyat Shab‘an), Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari (Fath al-Rahman), Nuh b. Mustafa Effendi (‘Iqd al-Marjan), Zayn al-‘Abidin al-Khalifati (Ifadat al-Mannan), and others.

It is recommended (mandub) to bring this night to life, so to speak, with all kinds of devotion, such as, prayer, charity, remembrance, recitation of the Qur’an [or translation or exegesis] and Prophetic Traditions (ahadith), conferring blessings upon the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), and seeking much forgiveness. It is also praiseworthy to bathe on this night to enter into the highest state of outward purification before engaging in acts of righteousness.

It is best to engage in such worship for most of the night, namely, more than half [between maghrib and fajr], and if unable, some extra devotional acts with a heart present and engaged in the moment is better than nothing. The greater the struggle and the greater the service, the greater the Divine gifts.

May Allah grant us all a tremendous forgiveness, may He grant us facilitation in upholding the noble shari‘a, in accordance with the inward and outward prophetic state, and may He grant relief and victory to the oppressed in Gaza and elsewhere, amin!

يُروى عن القاضي أبي الحسن أنَّه قال:
كنتُ أتفقَّه بنيسابورَ، فعُرِضَ لي عارضٌ مَنعَني مِن التَّفقُهِ والتَّعلُّم.
فذكرتُه للأستاذ أبي القاسم القُشَيريِّ رحمه اللَّه تعالى، فقال لي ادعُ اللَّه بهذا الدعاءِ:
(لا تُعِقْنَا عن العلم بعَقائقٍ ولا تَمْنَعْنَا بمَانِعٍ، واختُم لنا بخيرٍ، واجعلْ عواقبَ أمورِنا كلَّها إلى خيرٍ، واكفنا همومَ الدُّنيا وأحزانَ الآخرةِ).

قلتُ: وهو دعاءُ الإمامِ أبي محمدٍ الجُوَينيِّ في قُنوت الصُّبح كما ذكر ذلك الإمامُ تاج الدِّين السُّبكيُّ في طبقاته الكبرى،
وهو ودعاءُ الإمام أبي حامدٍ الإسْفَرَايينيِّ في قُنوتِه أيضًا كما ذكرَ ذلك الإمامُ الخَطِيبُ الشَّرْبِينيُّ في كتابِه مُغني المُحتاج.

«أقل منافع الأستاذ الفاضل أن يدلّ على الكتاب الصالح والطريق الصحيح، وهذا من إرشاده أعظم شيء مع قلته وخفّة مؤونته، فلو قال لك الأستاذ: "اشتغل بهذا الكتاب وارفض هذا الكتاب" = فقد أفادك فائدة جليلة، ونبّهك على فضيلة استحق بها منك الشكر على الأبد، وبهذا المقدار يستحق رئاسة الأستاذية، ويوجب عليك حقّ التلمذة، وتصير من أتباعه، ولو لم يفدك في الكتاب شيئًا أصلًا سوى الدلالة عليه= لكفى ذلك شرفًا وحقًا واجبًا»

" وكان سيدي عليٌ الخواص رحمه الله يقول:

(ما مِن حامل علمٍ إلا وهو يعمل به، ولو في حق نفسه إذا ارتكب المعاصي؛ وذلك لأنه يتوب ويندم إذا وقع فيها، فلولا علمه بالحكم ما اهتدى لكون ذلك ذنبًا، ولا كان تاب منه) .

فقد عمل مثلُ هذا بعلمه من هذه الحيثية، وإن كان من ارتكب المعاصي لم يعمل بعلمه على مصطلح الناس، فافهم؛ فالعلم نافعٌ لصاحبه على كل حال، ولم يزل علم الإنسان أكثر من عمله في كل عصر، والحمد لله رب العالمين " .

[THE SCHOLARS OF HANAFISM: 24A] HASAN KAFI AQHISARI

The accomplished shaykh and established faqih who was born and raised in his native Bosnia, and then studied with great scholars in Istanbul. He was appointed as a judge in various cities, he authored numerous texts, and he participated in multiple military campaigns. In his later years, he was appointed as the permanent judge in Akhisar, and he devoted his time to writing and teaching.

IBN AL-HUMAM’S ZAD AL-FAQIR

I was very honoured to recently complete the teaching of Zad al-Faqir with the dedicated students in Level 2 of the HLCP. The text is very useful and it covers a wide range of issues; you can see Ibn al-Humam (d. 861) making various riwaya choices at different points, and you also see something of his spiritual state manifesting! The text has an important, published commentary by Shams al-Din al-Tumurtashi (d. 1004)—author of the Tanwir al-Absar—as well as others. May Allah allow us to benefit from the works of the righteous, amin!

THE HEADGEAR OF IMAM ABU HANIFA, COLOURS, AND SUNNA VS CUSTOM

In both reports regarding the headgear of Imam Abu Hanifa, as recorded by Ibn Abi al-ʿAwam (d. 335) in his Fadaʾil Abi Hanifa, he is seen wearing a tall black hat. Such reports are useful because they help us to recognise how the fuqaha understood sunna, and also how context played a part in determining the right type of dress. Elsewhere in the fiqh [see: Multaqa al-Abhur], we also learn generally about the praiseworthy nature of black clothing. Interestingly, Haskafi (d. 1088) expresses that black is encouraged because it was the mark of the Abbasids, and thus the colour of power, conquest, and authority. What is fascinating is that the praiseworthy nature of white is established through the texts (nass), but the jurists still deemed both colours to be equivalent in terms of what is recommended. There is much to learn here from the engagement with tradition vis-à-vis society. May Allah Most High grant us a deep understanding of fiqh, amin!

في المعرض كتب كثيرة جميلة ومفيدة، ولو يقبل مني الإخوة الأفاضل نصيحة فأنصحهم بأن لا يفوتهم هذا الكتاب العظيم" الأمد الأقصى" للإمام الجليل أبي زيد الدبوسي الحنفي، والكتاب من نمط الكتب الجامعة للآداب والأخلاق بنفَس أصولي، على طريقة الإمام الغزالي رحمه الله، بل يفوقه في بعض الجوانب، وحسب هذا الكتاب فخرا أن مؤلفه هو أبو زيد الدبوسي، وهو إمام جليل القدر جدا يضاهي أبا المعالي الجويني والغزالي وهذه الطبقة من الفحول، للدرجة التي يقول فيها عنه تلميذه أبو بكر ابن العربي المالكي:" اعلم أن ربَّ النِّعمة على أهل خراسان، بل على أهل العلم في غابر الأزمان، في الكشف عن أسرار العلوم هو القاضي أبو زيد الدّبُّوسي ... ".
وهذا الكتاب ليس موضوعه الفقه، فهو ليس خاصا بالفقه الحنفي، بل يصلح للجميع، فهو من نمط إحياء علوم الدين وهذه الشاكلة، فخُذه ولن تندم إن شاء الله.

[THE SCHOLARS OF HANAFISM: 23A] HAJI EFFENDI

The righteous ustadh and noble ʿalim who studied in Istanbul and eventually became the official reviewer (muʿid) of the lessons of Kemalpaşazâde (d. 940)–his most important instructor and guide–and the one chosen by him to be responsible for collating and preserving his legal edicts. He would pray and fast frequently, and he was known for his piety and gracious character. He became sick later in life, but he would persevere with his teaching, and he lived to over 100.

[THE SCHOLARS OF HANAFISM: 21A1] MUHY AL-DIN KHATIB ZADA

The master-shaykh and scholarly authority who studied initially with his father and then with the luminaries of his time until he became an accomplished expert himself. His fame eventually spread such that the sultan appointed him as his private tutor. He engaged in many scholarly debates, he managed multiple seminaries in Istanbul, he retired with a large stipend, and he died and was buried in Istanbul.

THE COMING OF THE ʿABDROIDS!

In a recent class, I had remarked to the students that we might soon find ourselves amidst a new kind of “slave,” namely, the ʿabdroid! Many of the issues discussed by the jurists pertain to human beings in bondage, but there are many underlying maxims and theories which might help us understand how to respond to ʿabdroids, for example, being hired by others to complete certain tasks, having a car accident and injuring other people or animals, destroying property, running away or going rogue, or even forming groups and causing mayhem(!) AI is developing fast and it won’t be long before such questions will begin to arise. There is a lot of work to be done, but we might be able to unearth all kinds of treasures if we deeply engage with the fiqh. May Allah grant us true openings, amin!

THE SECOND ANNUAL US HANAFI INTENSIVE (2024)

Prior to heading to Toronto (CA) I had travelled to New Jersey (US) to conduct the second annual Hanafi intensive. My sincere gratitude goes to Wajahat, Uthman, and the dedicated team of volunteers from Darul Fath and the Safina Society who once again, in stalwart fashion, organised an excellent event in the lands beyond the sea (ma waraʾ al-bahr)! Alhamdulillah, some sixty or so brothers and sisters gathered together for three days in order to read and study multiple legal treatises including Kınalızâde’s Risalat Tabaqat al-Masaʾil, Minkarizâde’s Risalat fi Wujub Istimaʿ al-Khutba, Tumurtashi’s Risalat fi Ahkam al-Lihya, and more! The benefit one gains from live classes, as opposed to online, is stark, and anybody who has travelled and sacrificed of their time and self to attend such a gathering knows that the benefit is often amplified and extended to others. It was wonderful to meet otherwise virtual students in the real world, and to be able to enjoy their company as we critically analysed both technical and practical issues pertaining to the practice of religion in the modern world. One amazing highlight from this year was the beautifully published collection of rasaʾil for the event. May Allah Most High grant us the tawfiq to maintain our ʿilmi connections for His sake, and may He grant us many more opportunities of meeting and benefitting from each other, amin!

ZANDAWISATI’S RAWDAT AL-ʿULAMA

The Bukharan faqih, al-Zandawisati (d. 382), was significant in status and had multiple important works, but, interestingly, his published works to date circle primarily around ideas of propriety and wisdom. The Rawdat al-ʿUlama is one such example. These works are noteworthy as they give us something of an insight into early notions of piety amongst the fuqaha. I recently dipped into it in order to read his comments pertaining to both Rajab and Shaʿban.

[THE SCHOLARS OF HANAFISM: 20A2] MULLA KHUSRAW

The erudite faqih and peerless scholar of his time who was referred to as the “little Abu Hanifa.” He taught first in Edirne, and was then later appointed as an instructor in the Ayasofya in Istanbul. As well as becoming a judge–which he strongly disliked–and issuing legal edicts, he held the post of şeyhülislam for some twenty years. He taught many students, and he was buried in Bursa.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE TORONTO TOUR (2024)

Alhamdulillah, I was most honoured during my recent visit to Toronto to be invited by multiple seminaries and institutions of sacred learning. The GTA is a bustling place with many pockets of learning, and I often found myself amidst tens of keen students of knowledge, may Allah preserve and increase them. I spoke at Jame Abu Bakr about the legacy of Imam Abu Hanifa, and at Qasimul Uloom about genuineness in seeking sacred knowledge; I gave a lesson on Marghinani’s Hidaya to advanced-level female seminarians at Madina Masjid, and also conducted other seminars in the city. In the coming days, I hope to be able to share some of these sessions. In addition, there are multiple podcast episodes which should also be hitting the social feeds in due course, too! And all success is from Allah Most High.

THE FIRST TORONTO INTENSIVE (2024) – PATH TO HANAFI FIQH

I’ve just recently returned from a beautifully organised #Hanafi intensive in Toronto (CA), and I must commend Ustadh Danyal and his committed team of brilliant volunteers who put together such an excellent programme spanning four days, and catering to some 130 or so men and women.

We got started at 6pm on the Thursday and Friday evenings, and at 9am on Saturday and Sunday, and managed to keep each other’s company for some 30 hours or so! During this time, and after an introduction to the sciences of the shariʿa and some comments on the madhhab, we covered a significant portion of Mankubars b. ʿAbdullah al-Nasiri’s (d. 652) al-Muqaddima fi al-Fiqh (we hope to complete the last sections in the near future!). We had multiple, open Q&A sessions, and further nasiha sessions on both the Saturday and Sunday evenings, and there were also opportunities to resolve personal queries and the like.

The organisers had prepared an excellent study pack containing an original copy of the text (shipped directly from the publisher!), bookmarks, writing materials, a notebook, and a schedule for the classes, as well as a personalised name tag and lanyard. The food was excellent, and they even had a “coffee bar!” For the entire event, every attendee could go and ask for a hot drink of their choice and it would be brought to them at their table so they could focus on the lessons. It was all impeccably thought through, and everybody was deeply appreciative.

I thoroughly enjoyed being with such a wonderful group of students, and I truly benefitted from the interactive atmosphere of learning, mashaʾAllah, and given the feedback I’ve since received from attendees, organisers, and volunteers, the feeling seems to be mutual! Alhamdulillah for opportunities to serve, and I pray that Allah Most High keeps us steadfast on the path of knowledge, amin!

(Some reached out to ask, “What to do next?” My response to one and all is the same: find a teacher you can benefit and seek direction from, and continue on the journey of learning until you find transformation in your life such that the sunna manifests inwardly and outwardly. The path is long, but it only takes a step to begin. May Allah guide our hearts!)

The famed, accomplished, and authoritative shaykh who graduated and became peerless in his knowledge, particularly in the obscure sciences. After a dazzling performance in the sultan’s presence, he was appointed as a mudarris in Bursa, and then Edirne. After the conquest of Constantinople, he was appointed as its first judge and he remained in the position until his death.

[THE SCHOLARS OF HANAFISM: 19A] MUHY AL-DIN YAGHAN

The gifted and noble ustadh who studied extensively with al-Fanari and was honoured by the sultan such that he became the authority after him in teaching lessons, issuing legal edicts, and in serving as a judge. He was accepted by one and all, but he eventually left his posts and travelled to the Hejaz. Upon return, he did not serve in any official capacity until he died.

The peerless ustadh and foremost shaykh of his time. He served as a judge in Bursa, and taught and issued legal edicts, and his fame spread such that he became the first Şeyhülislam. He was extremely wealthy but would only wear a small turban and humble clothing. He later became blind but his sight then returned.

THE STUDENTS OF IMAM ABU HANIFA

al-Tahawi (d. 321) relates from Asad b. al-Furat (d. 213) that some forty individuals were in the circle of Imam Abu Hanifa (d. 150) and involved in the discussion and recording of issues.

The most significant amongst these were ten: Abu Yusuf, Zufar, Asad, ʿAfiya, Dawud, al-Qasim b. Maʿn, ʿAli b. Mushir, Yahya, Hibban, and Mandal. Although many others are listed in the works of Tabaqat, I’m sharing below a list of forty in order of their date of death.

The accomplished shaykh, remnant of the mujtahid imams, and the majestic ustadh, began his studies at home before leaving for Aleppo and then Cairo. The recognition of his tremendous scholarship meant that he became the first shaykh of the al-Madrasa al-Shaykhuniyya, but he refused judgeship posts. He left a great legacy of students and writings, and he died in Cairo.

TRANSMITTING MEANINGS, CONCEPTS & ʿILM VERSUS MERE WORDS & PSEUDO-ʿILM

It is easy to sometimes imagine that ancient #Hanafi jurists of Central Asia were sitting in their circles discussing intricate masaʾil of fiqh, kalam, or usul, in perfect and eloquent classical Arabic; but the truth probably lies somewhere else. In this short passage, and despite authoring his al-Kafi Sharh al-Bazdawi in Arabic, Sighnaqi (d. 714) conveys his teacher’s explanation of an usuli issue in its original Persian! Though Arabic was the medium of written scholarly engagement, lessons were likely occurring in a local language. In reality, the purpose of instruction is to relay not the words but the maʿani of the science. The words are mere receptacles which carry said meanings but they are not sought of in and of themselves. An instructor is expected to transmit the meanings and concepts, and not just translate the words. May Allah grant us true depth in knowledge, amin!

The masterful faqih and imam of guidance who studied with teachers in Termez and elsewhere before heading to Cairo where he became the imam at the Jamiʿ al-Mardini. From that post, he spent the rest of his life teaching the madhhab and issuing legal edicts. He passed away in Cairo.

Join us for a special seminar on #Hanafism and #Hanafis from the Horn of Africa with our guest, Shaykh Mohammed Abdullah Artan.

While the Ḥanafī scholarly tradition in the Horn produced notable figures such as the Cairene scholars Fakhr al-Dīn ʿUthmān b. ʿAlī al-Zaylaʿī (d. 743/1342) and Jamāl al-Dīn ʿAbdallah b. Yūsuf al-Zaylaʿī (d. 762/1361), much about their personal lives and education remains unknown. Similarly understudied are the many other Hanafi scholars from the Horn who settled in Shām, Ḥijāz, and Yemen teaching and refining Hanafi texts in various famed Hanafi madāris.

و«النهر»: هو جيحون يخرج من جبال بدخشان ويمر إلى المغرب والشمال إلى أرض بلخ وترمذ، ثم ينعطف إلى الجنوب ثم إلى المغرب، وينصب في بحيرة خوارزم، وقد ينصب في بحيرة طبرستان.

والبحيرة: مالح وسيع الطول والعرض، غير متصل بالبحر المحيط.

ومحيط بحيرة طبرستان ألف وخمسمائة فرسخ.

وهذه البلاد على شمال النهر، والتسمية بما وراء النهر: إما من أهلها، أو من أهل البلاد الجنوبية؛ فإنَّ «وراء» من الأضداد يطلق على القدام والخلف، وقد نشأ بما وراء النهر من لا يحصى عددهم من الفقهاء الحنفية"اهـ

The masterful jurist and theologian who studied with major authorities and was authorised to issue legal edicts (fatawa) in his youth. He dictated a commentary on Husami’s Muntakhab, he taught at the site of the grave of Abu Hanifa, and he then travelled for the hajj pilgrimage. He died in Merv.

A NOTE ON SEEKING KNOWLEDGE AND POOR SCHOLARS

I shared a post which said that seeking ʿilm without money is like engaging in war without a sword. Somebody had objected as scholars were poor. This was my comment:

On the contrary, the general trend with respect to scholars of the past was their being financially well-off because they were supported through the provision of government stipends and the like. Scholars being poorer is a recent phenomenon. The point in the OP stands in that seeking knowledge is not possible without funding, and that's also the reason why Imam Zarnuji dedicates a whole chapter of his work on the proper manners of a student to earning a living. Even now, you cannot go and study at a traditional seminary unless you have funding actually or effectively, namely, the individual pays or their relatives support them, or they are granted a third-party scholarship. Nothing is free. No teacher can teach for free. No institution can run for free. And no student can attain knowledge for free.

The righteous faqih and masterful muqriʾ, born in 1925, studied extensively with Shaykh Salih and graduated at his hands. He taught lessons after fajr and between maghrib and ʿishaʾ at the Umayyad Mosque for some 60 years. Along with his teacher, he founded the Maʿhad al-Fath al-Islami where he taught, served, and issued fatwas, and he then eventually took charge. He served in multiple posts in Damascus, and he died in 2012.

A NOTE ON EXPERTS

Somebody asked me about recognising experts so I sent them a brief message. I’m sharing the response below for anybody interested:

Firstly, most of their serious ʿilmi engagement will be in that science, and they aren’t just a jack of all trades. Secondly, they are clearly very well read and able to recall the masaʾil (istihdar). Thirdly, they actually have production of knowledge through writing and teaching (and students have actually acquired the ʿilm, not just masaʾil of a particular book—even one student is sufficient!). Fourthly, they critically analyse and actively engage with the science (know how to tafsil/taʾwil/tarjih where needed), and they don’t just read for baraka. Finally, the ʿilm speaks for itself as they are coloured by it—they aren’t seeking dunya thereby. God help us!

FIQH, RESOLVE, AND ABSTINENCE

It is reported that Imam Abu Hanifa was asked about that which aids a person in learning fiqh and being able to recall it, so he responded by saying, “gathering and strengthening one’s resolve.” So the questioner followed up by asking what the means to that is, so he responded, “lessening one’s connection to things.” Finally, he asks what the means to that is, and Imam Abu Hanifa responds, “taking something when you have a need, and not going beyond that.”

At the heart of becoming a talib al-ʿilm is abstinence (zuhd). Wanting more dunya [material or spiritual] only leads to a decrease, and an occupation of dunya in the space of ʿilm and akhira. Things distract one from singularity in purpose and direction, and they should only be used as a means and not as an end-goal. Strengthen your knowledge through sincere practice, continually ask for an increase, and gather and strengthen your resolve because the path is long and fraught with danger.

May Allah grant us well-being, amin!

حين يحث #أهل_العلم طالبه أن يواظب على الدروس ولا ينقطع؛ فذاك مبني على مواظبة الشيخ أصلًا، وما نراه اليوم من حال بعض المدرّسين من التهاون في إقامة المجالس، وتضييع أعمار الطلاب، والمماطلة في إنهاء الكتب، وتكثير المجموعات بغير طائل: أقرب للبطالة، مما يعوّد الطالب الكسل!

الأصل أن يعمد الشيخ لتربية عقل تلميذه، ويراقب فيه هذا النمو، ويسعى لترقيته في الفهم والقدرة على صياغة العلم، فإذا تباعدت المجالس وتناثرت الفوائد وتزاحمت الفنون في الذهن بغير ترتيب، فأنى يكون الانتفاع!

[THE SCHOLARS OF HANAFISM: 32] ADIB AL-KALLAS

The faqih and noble ascetic, born in 1921, he worked with his father and studied sacred knowledge in the mornings and evenings, and later dedicated himself to ʿilm completely and taught in the Maʿhad al-Fath from its inception. He was a noted jurist, and particularly acknowledged for his brilliance in ʿilm al-kalam. He held many posts in Damascus, he was well-known for his incredible humility and gracious character, and he died in 2009.

The noble mufti and medical doctor, and grandnephew of the famed Ibn ʿAbidin (d. 1252). UNTO THE MERCY OF GOD: SHAYKH MUHAMMAD ʿADNAN DARWISH

May Allah Most High shower His tremendous mercy upon the Damascene Hanafi scholar, Shaykh Muhammad ʿAdnan Darwish, who has passed away. He had graduated from the Maʿhad al-Fath al-Islami in Damascus at the hands of the likes of Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razzaq al-Halabi (d. 2012) and others, and then from al-Azhar, and was well known for his involvement in the building of hundreds of mosques. He also taught at the Maʿhad al-Fath for some twenty years. Like other significant scholars of the region, he was forced to migrate to Turkey but he continued to set up traditional seminaries as well as teaching extensively himself and holding different posts. Given his long career, he was the teacher of many, and he brought many works of the madhhab into print. May Allah have mercy upon him, accept his efforts, and enter him into His vast Gardens of Eden, amin!

THE #HANAFI CREED OF THE SUFIS

In his explication of the path of the saints, Abu Bakr al-Kalabadhi (d. 380)–himself a student of the Bukharan faqih Muhammad b. Al-Fadl al-Kamari (d. 381)–explains that their creed entails affirming the eternality of the Divine Creative Act (takwin). This is the transmitted Hanafi position as conveyed in books of Hanafi-Maturidi creed (including the Tahawiyya), and expressed by Saʿd al-Din al-Taftazani (d. 792) as being a position they ascribe to their early madhhab authorities. The Taʿarruf is an important manual of tasawwuf which was widely accepted, like the Qut al-Qulub, and subject to multiple commentaries–including one by the author himself. It had also been said: “Were it not for the Taʿarruf, tasawwuf would not have been known.” May Allah inspire us to acts and states which draw us continually nearer to Him, amin!

SHEFFIELD EVENT: THE FIQH OF EVERYDAY LIFE

We had a full house at a recent day-long seminar organised by SeekersHub in Sheffield where we studied the fiqh of everyday life. We had attendees ranging from teenagers to university-students, parents to students of knowledge, and perhaps some more in-between all of that!

Alhamdulillah, we managed to cover the laws pertaining to food and drink, clothing, earning a living, learning sacred knowledge, gender interaction, and more. The attendees were well fed(!) and the organisers did a great job of keeping things running to schedule such that we were able to complete the content.

The feedback I’ve received from the attendees has been very positive, and I look forward to any future events and opportunities to serve. May Allah Most High grant us continued tawfiq, amin!

The blessed shaykh from a noble family who, after studying extensively with many scholars and teaching in multiple locations, founded a charity and then the Maʿhad al-Fath al-Islami, an institution for instruction in the Islamic sciences. Shortly thereafter, he opened a similar institution for ladies. He left a legacy of students, and he died in Damascus.

TABAQAT AL-HANAFIYYA: THE NAZM AL-JUMAN OF IBN DUQMAQ

This is a beautiful compendium of #Hanafi scholars by Shaykh Ibrahim b. Muhammad, Ibn Duqmaq (d. 809), the student of Qurashi (d. 775) who, incidentally, is also the author of the al-Jawahir al-Mudiyya. He dedicates the entire first volume to the manaqib of Imam Abu Hanifa, a significant contribution in and of itself, and then proceeds to compile four volumes on the scholars of the madhhab. He remarks that his shaykh did not cover many of the jurists, nor did he order them into their respective tabaqat, and this is what he resolves with his work. An important publication for those interested in early, Hanafi, biographical dictionaries.

DO YOU HAVE THE NUMBER TO THE HEAVENS?

In this short clip, the late Shaykh Fathi Safi (may Allah have mercy upon him) explains that he has the phone number for the heavens: 222–namely, two rakʿats and two drops of tears at two in the morning. For the mentally challenged, there is no actual “phone number.” This is a reference to sincere seeking and worship by getting up and praying in the night when others are asleep. The shaykh explains that if you don’t receive, then the issue is with you; Allah is the Giver, and He gives. As we know from the hadith, Divine gifts are dispensed at this time, and, as the poet said, they dished them out whilst you were asleep! May Allah Most High awaken our hearts and souls, amin!

Shaykh Muhammad ʿAdnan Darwish, the Damascene editor of numerous Hanafi works, is very ill and seems to be in an intensive care unit in a hospital in Istanbul—may Allah grant him a complete shifaʾ, amin! Many years ago, I was blessed to able to study some usul al-fiqh with him, alhamdulillah. In my first class, he unexpectedly started testing me on fiqh and asked some quite nuanced questions. Thankfully, he was happy with my answers!

[THE SCHOLARS OF HANAFISM: 30B] ABUʾL KHAYR ʿABIDIN

The faqih of Damascus, the noble sharif, and the Mufti of Syria. He studied with the Damascene luminaries of his time, and became well-known for his mastery of fiqh. He took up his father’s former post in leadership and teaching at the Jamiʿ al-Ward, and he was appointed as a judge multiple times. He was responsible for fatawa for some 35 years.

THE INTER-SCIENCE CONSONANCE OF #HANAFISM

It is important to recognise that the Hanafi authorities are explaining issues across sciences, and it is only when you bring everything together under one roof that you begin to see patterns and the application of consistent premises to arrive at conclusions. An example of this is found in the Mukhtasar al-Hikma al-Nabawiyya by Shaykh Ishaq al-Hakim al-Rumi (d. 950), an Ottoman scholar who authored a commentary (or two!) on the al-Fiqh al-Akbar ascribed to Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah be well-pleased with him!) Throughout his text, he quotes the shaykhayn–Sarakhsi and Bazdawi–extensively to make his points and to share the Hanafi method and usul application; in doing so, he demonstrates the importance of being connected to the differing sciences within the overarching umbrella of Hanafism. May Allah Most High grant us a deep understanding of faith, amin!
