In the modern world, it is no longer necessary to use animals as food or other products, such as medicine and clothing. Agree or disagree?
With the advent of technology, using animals as a food source and for the production of other goods, including medicine and clothes, is seen by some to be no longer important. While I agree that modern technology can replace animals in numerous fields, I also believe that some animals are still necessary for manufacturers and scientific research.
On the one hand, animals have already been replaced by technology in several fields, rendering their use unnecessary. Making clothes out of animalsโ skins, for example, is not prioritized in many countries any longer. This can be explained by the high costs involved in maintaining specially designated farms for the animals, and by massive criticisms from nature conservationists, for whom killing animals for their skin is reprehensible. In the modern world, however, there are ways to cut costs and content environmentally-friendly individuals: using technology and synthetic materials to manufacture products. A case in point can be using artificial leather to produce shoes. In retrospect, some animals like alligators had to be killed to make shoes, which is no longer a must.
Similarly, animals have long been used in medicine for experimentations. Mice, rabbits and monkeys, for instance, have obtained a common connotation with experimental tests for vaccines and other drugs. These animals, however, are less favored as laboratory subjects in many countries, as the tests might harm the animals. The history has showed that conducting experiments can lead to detrimental, or even fatal consequences for animals. Therefore, most countries are working on developing special computer simulations using artificial intelligence in order to avoid using animals to test medicines in the long run.
On the other hand, I am convinced that using animals is still important in a number of spheres. In textile industry, for instance, there are some fabrics that cannot be mimicked or replaced. The wool taken from ewes can be a good example. Manufacturers tend to utilize the wool to produce clothes, such as coats of high quality, whereas the ones made of synthetic fabrics or cotton cannot produce garments of the same standard. Moreover, shaving off the wool is also useful for the ewe, since these animals have a propensity to grow heavy wools within a short time span, which hinders their mobility and respiration.
In addition, animals are still an indispensable part of producing medicine against many highly lethal diseases. For example, snakes and scorpions have been used in the production of antidotes and vaccines for thousands of years. Even today, despite the existence of modern medical devices, the venom of these animals is still ubiquitously extracted for the production of medicines. On a similar note, even non-poisonous animal species are vital for medicines. To provide an example, special oil of several fish species is used worldwide to cure visual impairment, and other similar health issues.
In conclusion, although modern technology can replace animals in several industries like textile and in medical experimentations, I am adamant that we need to continue to use them, particularly in clothes production and medicine.
