The word "crook" or "cruck" originates from the Middle English term crok(e), which comes from the Old Norse krฤka, meaning "hook." This term also gave rise to the word "crooked," referring to something bent, twisted, or deformed. Additionally, it is the source of the "crook" used by shepherds and symbolically by bishops.

Crucks were primarily used during the medieval period in the construction of timber-framed buildings, such as houses and large tithe barns.

They were also employed in the roofs of stone-walled structures like churches. However, these bent timbers were relatively rare due to their high demand in the shipbuilding industry.

When naturally curved timbers were readily available, carpenters continued to use them long after the medieval period. For example, base crucks can still be found in the roofs of the residential range at Staple Inn Buildings, Nos. 337-338, High Holborn, London.

These crucks date back to 1586, with notable alterations in 1886 by Alfred Waterhouse, as well as further restorations in 1936 and 1954-55. Despite these modifications, renowned expert Cecil Hewett has confirmed that the 16th-century crucks remain original.

This rare Irish needlework instruction book from 1833 contains samples of sewing, darning, embroidery, knitting and miniature clothing, and was used at the Female Model school in Kildare Place, Dublin.
It is called 'A Concise Account of the Mode of Instructing in Needle-Work', and was printed by Thomas I. White of Dublin in 1833. The cover is inscribed 'Sarah Darby 1837'. These are normal needlework instruction manuals that the students would paste their work into.
In May last year this book was auctioned by Freeman's Hindman of Philadelphia, PA, with an estimate of $3,000-$5,000!

โœจ PลANETNICY

Slavic Mythology

Pล‚anetnicy (singular form: pล‚anetnik, pronounced pwa-net-neek) are the โ€˜shepherds of the cloudsโ€˜, described in numerous Polish folk tales. They are believed to be ancient spirits with a great power over various atmospheric phenomena, able to control the clouds by moving them around on long ropes. That way they can bring for example nourishing rain or damaging ice storms to the crop fields, or maintain a good weather for villages.

They belong to a group of neutral spirits. Pล‚anetnicy were seen as friendly to the people, but on the other hand could be very easily enraged if facing rudeness or depravity. In such a case, they might act mischievously and bring a storm over a village or a crop field โ€“ and could potentially destroy them on a whim.

Local Polish people bestowed a great respect for these spirits and always tried to gain their favours. They practiced various forms of magical actions. For example , it was common to throw a bit of flour into the air as an offering for the pล‚anetnicy, to burn special compositions of herbs for them, and then ring local churchโ€™s bells in order to โ€˜markโ€™ an area where the clouds should be dispersed.

Pล‚anetnik would sometimes visit a house, always in dripping wet clothes even if the weather was hot and dry. In such situations it is necessary to greet him as one would greet a dearest member of the family or a closest friend โ€“ to feed him, to provide a good company and prepare a place to rest. However, it is forbidden to ask him anything about his identity (maybe unless he would start talking about it first). When appearing on the earth, pล‚anetnicy are usually taking a shape of tall and old men, wearing simple clothes (usually traditional outfits made of white linen) and straw hats with a wide brim that are protecting their eyes from the sunlight.

Polish legends say that there are different ranks of pล‚anetnicy. There are groups responsible for different types of clouds creating either rain, snow, hail, storm, and so on. Some of them are binding together lightnings and preparing them for a later use. Some are doing basic work like shaping up the clouds out of fog that they โ€˜take outโ€™ from seas, lakes, rivers and swamps. The strongest pล‚anetnicy are pushing the heaviest of storm clouds. Sometimes a group of them is chosen to escort a captured evil dragon over the clouds to a place of its execution โ€“ then, strong hailstorms are appearing under the clouds as a side effect.

Sometimes an โ€˜earthly pล‚anetnikโ€™ is born. It is a human being who has an unusual ability of predicting or even controlling the weather. Polish people believed that such abilities could be gained by making a pact with the spirits of pล‚anetnicy. Such a human being โ€“ the โ€˜earthly pล‚anetnikโ€™ (Polish: โ€˜ziemski pล‚anetnikโ€™) โ€“ is easy to recognize by their calmness, devotion, wisdom and kindness to the others. One of the last well-documented cases of a man considered to be an โ€˜earthly pล‚anetnikโ€™ comes from a village of Przysietnica in southern Poland, where the local people recognized the unusual abilities in Mr. Wojciech Rachwaล‚, who passed away in 1973. Old stories about Mr. Rachwaล‚ say that he was able to stop storms from entering the village by making signs of a cross into the direction of the sky or holding up a gromnica (thunder candle), and was always able to predict the weather. His grave in a local cementery contains a line: โ€˜the last pล‚anetnikโ€™.

๐ŸŽจ "Queen Guinevereโ€™s Maying" by John Collier (1900)
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Location: Private Collection.

๐Ÿ” The Story Behind the Artwork
John Collierโ€™s "Queen Guinevereโ€™s Maying" captures a scene from Arthurian legend, showing Queen Guinevere leading a traditional May Day procession. Dressed in resplendent white and adorned with flowers, she symbolizes purity, beauty, and the renewal of spring. The atmosphere of celebration and natureโ€™s rebirth is juxtaposed with the underlying tension of her fateful role in the legendโ€”her love affair with Sir Lancelot that ultimately leads to the fall of Camelot.

Collierโ€™s meticulous detail, from Guinevereโ€™s flowing gown to the delicate blossoms, highlights his ability to blend Romanticism with historical and mythical narratives.

๐ŸŽจ "The Priestess of Bacchus" by John Collier (1885)
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Location: Private Collection.

๐Ÿ” The Story Behind the Artwork
John Collierโ€™s "The Priestess of Bacchus" vividly brings to life the mystical and intoxicating world of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, revelry, and ecstasy. The painting portrays a confident priestess, adorned with a laurel crown and draped in a tiger peltโ€”a symbol of Bacchusโ€™ wild, untamed power. She holds a thyrsus (a staff tipped with a pinecone), a traditional emblem of Bacchic worship, which highlights her role as a spiritual and ritualistic figure.

The priestess stands in a lush, rocky landscape, embodying a balance between human beauty and the primal forces of nature, as Collier explores themes of devotion, vitality, and hedonism.

This Kurdish "community centre" a few years ago was briefly in the headlines because they had a political training day for Antifa and they happened upon Tommy Robinson and Lucy Brown around the corner and attacked them. The British far-Left and Kurdish Marxists have long been linked and many went to Syria to volunteer with the various arms of the 'International Freedom Battalion' in Rojava. Some were killed including an *Antifa girl from Brighton. This has been known to authorities for almost a decade, so the question must be: why now?

An elaborate Iron Age shield found in an impressive warrior grave in Yorkshire in 2017 was declared "the most important British Celtic art object of the millennium".
Careful conservation work has revealed the intricate pattern carved with a hammer on the bronze shield - it is an asymmetrical, swirling texture used for decorative purposes
The extraordinary 75cm shield was found in the 'warrior's grave', unearthed in Pocklington, Yorkshire, on the building site of Persimmon Homes, nicknamed 'The Mile'.
The tomb also contained an upright chariot, two ponies, a bronze and red glass brooch, and various other precious artifacts.
The shield was found in the chariot, covered by the skeleton of its owner around 320-174 BC. about.
Experts believe the "warrior" was over 46 years old and likely a highly respected member of his community, as he was buried with an offering of six pigs and an additional grave of a younger man next to him.
Experts believe the design was achieved by hammering the shield from the reverse, allowing an asymmetrical pattern of mollusc shells to be created around a central scaffolding.
โ€œWe don't know how the man died. There is some blunt force trauma but it wouldn't have killed him,โ€ said Paula Ware of the MAP Archaeological Practice, who completed the excavation.
Furthermore, Ware added, ''the nature of the burial is indicative of a belief in an afterlife.
The shield features a scalloped edge. This previously unknown design feature is incomparable to any other Iron Age find in Europe and this makes it truly unique''.
"Previously such elaborate shields were thought to be purely ceremonial, reflecting social status, but not used in battle," she added.
'Our investigation however found evidence of a sword-like mark and also signs of repairs, suggesting that the shield was well maintained and not just for decorative purposes.

In 1972, while on vacation, Stefano Mariottini, an engineer from Rome, snorkeling off the coast of Monasterace near Riace, noticed a human hand sticking out of the sand. Deciding that it was a corpse, he called the police. From the bottom of the Ionian Sea, two statues of "Warriors from Riace" were raised - ancient Greek bronze statues of the 5th century BC.

Painted in 1903, Janis Rozentฤls' The Black Snake (Melna ฤลซska) stands as a haunting and deeply symbolic piece within the Latvian Symbolist movement. Rozentฤls, known for blending folklore, personal anguish, and universal themes, crafted this painting during a time when he was exploring darker psychological and mythological themes.

The work portrays a solitary figure gripped by despair, entwined with a black serpent while stranded on a barren rock in turbulent waters. With its bleak palette and stark composition, the painting captures an emotional and existential struggle, channeling universal fears of isolation, guilt, and mortality.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Symbolism and Details

The Serpent: The black snake coiled around the central figure is a vivid metaphor. In Latvian folklore, serpents often symbolize misfortune, death, or sin. Here, the snake could be interpreted as the manifestation of inner turmoil, regret, or entrapment.

The Solitary Figure: The anguished, half-naked figure grips the rock desperately as waves crash around them. Their expression of despair and the vulnerability of their posture emphasize their physical and emotional helplessness. The person could symbolize humanity's struggle against fate, nature, or inner demons.

The Stormy Sea: Surrounding the rock, the turbulent ocean symbolizes chaos and the uncontrollable forces of life. The cold, foamy waves battering the figure amplify the feeling of vulnerability and hopelessness.

The Dark Sky and Golden Horizon: While the storm clouds loom overhead, a faint golden light on the horizon suggests a glimmer of hope or redemption amidst despair. This interplay between light and darkness reflects the duality of despair and resilience.

I need a lot of time alone, to sit in silence and think about things and then donโ€™t think at all and just try to merge with nature and observe it haha. From Slavic folklore, Rusalka are believed to be girls who have drowned themselves because of unrequited love. Rusalka are often described as beautiful maidens with pale skin and greenish hair. Malicious and hateful towards mankind, Rusalka are said to be at their most dangerous in early June. They would leave their watery depths in order to sleep and comb out their hair in willow trees, it was forbidden to swim during these times. However, before the 19th century, they were seen as being kind and benevolent. It was believed they loved children and would protect them in every possible way and would sometimes save those that were drowning.

A:Johann Guntermann (31), the suspected head of the notorious Leipzig โ€œHammer Gangโ€, was caught travelling on a train near Weimar by a German police task force.

Described as Germanyโ€™s most dangerous left-wing terrorist, Guntermann was brought before a Federal Court of Justice judge in Karlsruhe on Saturday morning, the Bild newspaper reports.

According to the top German tabloid, the โ€œAntifa Eastโ€ radical had โ€œHATEโ€ tattooed on his right hand and โ€œCOPSโ€ on his left.

Greetings, everyone.

Millenniyule X will begin on the 12th of December 2024. It will be broadcast live on Twitter, Odysee, Telegram, Dlive and Rumble. There will be 52 interviews, taking in a broad swathe of the Dissident Right as well as a few figures from outside it.

The format will initially be the usual one: four interviews a night, along with a sprinkling of solo AMAs and one "Christmas cards" stream. But there will be a new feature this year...

After Christmas there will be six "banquet" hangouts with many guests from Millenniyule past and present. These will be themed: Scottish, English, Canadian, American, Germanic, and "open to all". The latter will hark back to the anarchic beginnings of Millenniyule - it will be a hangout open to the public.

There will also be a 1-hour "countdown" video immediately preceding the first interview. That video has already been completed so there is no chance of it not being ready on time - as has sadly happened in previous years - and this year it is something quite special, commemorating a decade of the festival.

The structure will be something like this (times shown in British):

11th Dec - Prologue AMA (10pm)
12th - countdown video (7pm)
12th-24th - 4 interviews each evening
25th - Christmas cards stream (2am)
25th - Christmas Day AMA (10pm)
26th - Boxing Day AMA (10pm)
27th - banquets 1 + 2
28th - banquets 3 + 4
29th - banquets 5 + 6
30th - Morgoth (8pm)
31st - Outro AMA (8pm)

The full schedyule will be published around the 8th of December. The guests will be announced each day up till then, both on this Telegram channel and the recently-recovered Twitter profile.

Millenniyule needs your support.

Dear mothers,
When your daily life feels mundane or a struggle, remember these words of Ven. Fulton Sheen:
"A woman is capable of more sustained sacrifice than man. Man is more apt to be the hero in one great, passionate outburst of courage. But a woman is heroic through the years, months, and even seconds of daily life, the very repetition of her toils giving them the semblance of the commonplace. Not only her days but her nights, not only her mind, but her body, must share in the Calvary of Mothering. She, therefore, has a greater understanding of redemption than man, for she comes closer to death in bringing forth life."

Your daily existence as a mother is heroic, and never forget it.

๐Ÿ‘ป Dziady โ€ข Dzyady โ€ข Dedy โ€ข Didy โ€ข Ilgฤ—s ๐Ÿ‘ป

Dziady (the most common version of the word used in various dialects, so thats the one Ill use here) is a Slavic festival occurring twice a year, around spring and autumn. The word literally means grandfathers or eldfathers but is often translated as Forefathers Eve.

Early Slavs believed souls returned from the underworld of Nawia (or Nav), during certain times of the year, and the end of October was one of those times. This celebration with the spirits of the afterlife took place in graveyards, where great fires were built to provide light for the deceased and for them to warm themselves.

Slavs feast and eat plentifully, and will drop food on the graves. The giving of sacrificial blood, as well as clothes and food such as kasha (a type of porridge), eggs, honey, and even vodka is meant to offer ease to the souls as they make the difficult travel to Nawia. While Nawia is considered a positive afterlife, the journey to it is difficult.

Another crucial part of the festival is showing the way for the souls back to Nawia through dances around the fires. The Slavs didnโ€™t have pumpkin carving, but they did carve Karaboshka masks. People would wear these masks, made of wood or clay, come night to imitate the dead. Then, with torches in hand, they would lead the dead to the underworld. On their way back home, people would leave out offerings for the wandering spirits who had no family to give them gifts or show them home.

When the souls of Nawia returned, they were the people who died natural deaths and lived typically natural lives. But murderers and those who died unnaturally lingered on Jawia (earth) as demons. These could strike many nights, but the danger was much stronger on a night like Dziady. To prevent these attacks, people dropped green branches on the graves of those murderers that they passed. Then, fires were set on those graves and at crossroads (considered powerful in Slavic culture) to keep away the demons.

๐Ÿ‘น

In the context of the Slavic holiday of the dead, the most popular name is "Dziady". The word "dziad" comes from the Proto-Slavic word *dฤ›dัŠ (pl. *dฤ›di) meaning primarily "father of the father, father of the mother", "an old man with an honorable position in the family", "ancestor" and "old man". Second meaning is "spirit or demon.โ€

The following day, MacIan gathered his bow and arrow, and did as he was told, accompanied by his dog. Upon arrival, he spotted the Glaistig one final time amid a large herd of deer. At the head of the herd was the legendary white stag. MacIan drew his bow and shot at the trophy, whereupon the Glaistig cried out, โ€œStick in the stomach arrow!โ€ The arrow found its mark, rewarding the hunter with his greatest prize. The Glaistig never again haunted MacIan, though he was sure to bring his dog to the summer pastures thereafter.

The Green Lady of Dunolly Castle, in Oban, Argyll, was thought to be a Glaistig of a different kind. The castle was the site of many a bloody battle throughout the centuries and was haunted by many other spirits. But, while no one knows how she died, this Green Maiden was thought to be the spirit of an innocent young chamber maid, and the Sith allowed her to continue her tasks following her death. She tidied the castle and cleansed the dirty cloths by night, while caring for certain occupants. One such occupant, a feeble-minded child, was a particular charge of the spirit. She ensured he was well fed and protected during jaunts outside the castle. Meanwhile, it was common for rumors to circulate about sharper witted occupants, who had crossed the spirit, to have their food mysteriously tainted with dust.

The malevolent nature of the Glaistig is illustrated in the tale of the spirit who haunted a bridge near Ben Nevis, in Lochaber. Believed to have been the victim of an unnatural and premature death, the woman was said to have been responsible for the deaths and disappearances of many travelers who dared to cross her bridge. After awhile villagers from surrounding settlements became desperate to be free from its wrath. A brash local blacksmith, by the name of Big Kennedy, emerged to deal with the ghostly maiden. He was a fearless man, who often bragged about forging the strongest iron weapons infused with the magic of the Sith. For this mission, he created the strongest sword belts, with which he would be able to control the Glaistig at the bridge.

As the blacksmith approached the bridge on horseback, the bedraggled looking woman appeared before him. She appealed for a ride to her destination, as she was tired and could walk no more. Kennedy, alert to the Glaistigโ€™s treachery, hoisted her up, but before she could trick him, he bound her with the belt, which prevented her escape. The desperate spirit begged to be released, promising all sorts of rewards. Finally she offered him the finest of houses and a herd of cattle unmatched in all the land. The haughty blacksmith agreed, but only if the rewards came before the night was over. And they were to seal the deal with a handshake.

The Glaistig gave out a yell that echoed throughout the realm, summoning help from all the fae folk. Answering the call multitudes of faeries and worked tirelessly through the night to complete the task. Meanwhile, as morning approached and the work was nearing its completion, Kennedy stoked a new fire and forged iron. The Green Lady finally summoned a herd of the finest cattle, and the deal appeared to have been completed.

When the time came for the handshake, Kennedy suddenly took the still hot iron and thrust it into the Glaistigโ€™s hand. The Green Lady let out the loudest of shrieks and cursed the blacksmith. Before she succumbed, she proclaimed that Kennedy would not only die too young, but he would also witness the deaths of his sons. The name of Kennedy would no longer occupy Lochaber.

Stories of the Glaistig permeate throughout the Scottish Highlands, side by side with those of the more well known Brownies and Urisks. Almost all castles and manors, and their surrounding lands, are thought to be haunted by their own Green Lady, displaying different characteristics. So, if you are traveling through the misty glens and exploring the magnificent ruins of Scotland ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ, beware of the Glaistig. Is she friend or foe?

In one such tale, a man farmer named Donald MacIan of Lochaber was attending to his cattle in his summer pastures, when he was suddenly approached by a Glaistig. The frightened young man attempted to hide behind a bush, but the spirit was not to be deterred. While MacIan hid his eyes, the apparition danced over him, repeating a strange lyric over and over. After some time had elapsed, the spirit began drifting away, still repeating the rhyme. When he had the opportunity, MacIan gathered his herd, and quickly retreated to his shieling.

During the night, the Glaistig once again visited the young farmer in his summer retreat, entering and standing over the sleeping cattle herder. Before she could lay her ghostly hands on the man, MacIanโ€™s black dog leapt to his defense, pouncing on the Green Maiden. Before the guardian canine could do any damage, the Glaistig pleaded for mercy, offering to leave and never return if the dog was called off. The weary and confused farmer accepted the offer and dragged his protector away. In gratitude, the maiden told MacIan to go to a certain location, where he would have the opportunity to hunt a mythical, large white stag.

In Scottish Folklore, the spirit is similar to Brownies, the Urisk, and the Banshee.

In her more positive roles, the Glaistig is viewed as a goddess of fertility and a guardian of cattle, often in exchange for sacrificial offerings of milk. Each night the milk would be left either in the barn or out in a field, to entice the spirit to care for the creatures and protect the herd from illness or predators. Sometimes milk would be left in bowls, other times poured over boulders. The tale of the Glaistig of Ardnadrochet is one such example.

The Green Maiden was also believed to be a goddess of the hunt in some areas of the Highlands. She could be seen herding and hiding great herds of deer through the forests and glens of Scotland, sometimes causing them to disappear during times of unnecessary peril She could become violently enraged if a hunter killed a doe, rather than a stag. She allowed hunting to those deserving of the privilege, sometimes even aiding the hunter, guiding his arrow to the target.

The Glaistig (pronounced โ€œglaโ€”s(h)teegโ€) is one of the lesser-known figures in Scottish Highland folklore. The Glaistig is a haunting woman with a pale complexion, even with a greenish tint, and yellow hair reaching to her feet. In fact, due to her viridescent color and green attire, she is known as the Maighdean unaine, or the Green Maiden.โ€ Traditionally, she was described to have the upper body of a woman, while her lower extremities were of a goat with cloven hooves. In later tales, she is characterized as all human. Depending on where one is in the Highlands, she can be a stout, petite figure with underestimated strength and a deafening yell or a tall, emaciated spirit, somewhat meek under that power of a male deity the Gruagach. People often mistakenly identify her as one of the Fae folk, with similar comparisons to the Irish Banshee, but folklorists believe her to be more human, possibly a woman of a respectful position, who had been touched by the Fae Folk.

The Glaistig usually appears solitary, though at times, she can appear with a little one, a child of her own. And though the term, โ€œGlaistig,โ€ is commonly translated to โ€œthe Water Imp,โ€ and many sitings of her is said to be around bodies of water, breaking down her label suggests something entirely different. โ€œGlas,โ€ meaning grey or pale, while โ€œStig,โ€ translates to sneaking of crouching, hints at a more haunting spirit. The Glaistig is not restricted to rivers or lochs, also being connected to castles or mansions and their surroundings.

THE GLAISTIG; SCOTLANDโ€™S SPECTRAL GREEN LADY

The pale, wraithlike figure observed the scene with great apprehension. A suspicious group of men had sailed from Lorn and disembarked not far from the Lamont farm of Ardnadrochet, on Mull. The Glaistig, who had been bestowed with the gift of foresight, knew of the menโ€™s intentions to steal the cattle in her charge. For years, the spirit had nurtured the cattle to the point where they were known far and wide. And so, she rounded up her prized stock and attempted to flee into Meall na Lรฌre. The guardian had the perfect place to stash her kine, a dell called Glaic nan Gaisgeach. Much to her dismay, however, the rustlers threatened to overtake he before she could reach the sanctuary

Rather than suffering indignation of having her stock stolen, the Glaistig struck each cow with her hand, instantly turning the beasts to stone, visible even today. When the bandits arrived, and believing that their prey had escaped, the leader of the thieves struck one of the stones, splitting it into two. He was sure it was the bed of Bo Bahn, or the White Cow. At the sight of seeing one of her charges killed, the Glaistig died of a broken heart. Her remains was later retrieved by Lamont of Ardnadrochet, to whom she was beholden, and buried among the unbaptized children on a small plot of land overlooking the Sound of Mull, never again to haunt Ardnadrochet.

๐Ÿ‘ป Guising

Halloween has its roots in the Celtic threshold festival of Samhain, and dressing up in costumes, likewise, is linked to guising.

Initially unique to Scotland and Ireland, guising traditionally involved dressing up and pretending to be malicious spirits so the ones visiting the world of the living during the liminal period would think they were among familiars, leaving the guisers safe from harm.

๐Ÿ‘ Folklorist Margaret Fay Shaw documented guising in the Hebrides. Young people would use items like sheepskins, hay, old clothing, and rope to make their costumes. They would carry lit peats to guide them from house to house, where they sang or told a joke in return for a treat.

In Nordic and Germanic Polytheism Loki, Loptr, or Hveรฐrungr is a god or jรถtunn (or both). Loki is strongly associated with fire. Loki is the son of Fรกrbauti and Laufey, and the brother of Helblindi and Bรฝleistr. By the jรถtunn Angrboรฐa, Loki is the father of Hel, the wolf Fenrir, and the world serpent Jรถrmungandr. By his wife Sigyn, Loki is the father of Narfi and/or Nari. By the stallion Svaรฐilfari, Loki is the motherโ€”giving birth in the form of a mareโ€”to the eight-legged horse Sleipnir. In addition, Loki is referred to as the father of Vรกli in the Prose Edda. Loki's relation with the gods varies by source; Loki sometimes assists the gods and sometimes behaves in a malicious manner towards them. Loki is a shape shifter and in separate incidents he appears in the form of a salmon, a mare, a seal, a fly, and possibly an elderly woman named รžรถkk (Old Norse 'thanks'). Loki's positive relations with the gods end with his role in engineering the death of the god Baldr and Loki is eventually bound by the gods with the entrails of one of his sons. In both the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, the goddess Skaรฐi is responsible for placing a serpent above him while he is bound. The serpent drips venom from above him that Sigyn collects into a bowl; however, she must empty the bowl when it is full, and the venom that drips in the meantime causes Loki to writhe in pain, thereby causing earthquakes. With the onset of Ragnarรถk, Loki is foretold to slip free from his bonds and to fight against the gods among the forces of the jรถtnar, at which time he will encounter the god Heimdallr and the two will slay each other.

One of the most significant archaeological finds in Cymru came all the way back in 1869 when a Welsh farmer near Dolbenmaen, Gwynedd, discovered Lunula Llanllyfni in a bog at Llecheiddior-uchaf farm.

Lunula Llanllyfni is made from solid gold (believed to be Welsh gold) and weighs in at 185.4g (6.5 ounces), whilst measuring at 24cm (9.5 inches) in diameter. Its weight means that Lunula Llanllyfni is the heaviest lunula discovered on either the island of Great Britain and the island of Ireland.

White Marble Sculpture, "The Sleeping Hermaphrodite (Borghese)", attributed to Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Naples 1598 โ€“ Rome 1680), 1700 AD.

In 1620 AD, at the age of 22 Gian Lorenzo Bernini was asked to make a mattress for the Hermaphrodite. He was paid sixty scudi for making the buttoned mattress upon which the Hermaphrodite reclines, so strikingly realistic that visitors are inclined to give it a testing prod. Around the world there are about twenty copies of Hermaphrodite but only one is Berniniโ€™s mattress and itโ€™s at the Louvre.

Original Irish Jack-o-Lanterns made of turnips were truly terrifying.

The Jack-O-Lantern story comes from Irish folklore and the original was a far cry from the cute friendly Halloween decoration we know today!

A far cry from the grinning pumpkins of Halloween today, the original folklore version of Jack-o-Lanterns, named for Jack Oโ€™Lantern of the Irish myth, were actually quite terrifying. They were carved from turnips or beets rather than festive orange pumpkins and were intended to ward off unwanted visitors.

According to Irish folklore, a man called Jack Oโ€™Lantern was sentenced to roam the earth for eternity. A ghostly figure of the night, Oโ€™Lantern walks with a burning coal inside of a carved-out turnip to light his way.

As the tale goes, a man called Stingy Jack invited the devil for a drink and convinced him to shape-shift into a coin to pay with. When the devil obliged, Jack decided he wanted the coin for other purposes and kept it in his pocket alongside a small, silver cross to prevent it from turning back into the devil.

Jack eventually freed the devil under the condition that he wouldnโ€™t bother Jack for one year, and wouldnโ€™t claim Jackโ€™s soul once he died. The next year, Jack tricked the devil once more by convincing him to climb up a tree to fetch a piece of fruit. When he was up in the tree, Jack carved a cross into the trunk so the devil couldnโ€™t come down until he swore he wouldnโ€™t bother Stingy Jack for another ten years.

When Jack died, God wouldnโ€™t allow him into heaven and the devil wouldnโ€™t allow him into hell. He was instead sent into the eternal night, with a burning coal inside a carved-out turnip to light his way. Heโ€™s been roaming the earth ever since. The Irish began to refer to this spooky figure as โ€œJack of the Lantern,โ€ which then became โ€œJack Oโ€™Lantern.โ€

The mummies of Venzone!

In 1950, the residents of Venzone, a quaint Italian village in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, lived in harmony with their ancient mummified ancestors. These mummies werenโ€™t objects of fear or superstition; they were treated as part of the family, with villagers eating, praying, and going about daily life alongside them.

The story began in the 14th century, when the Black Death swept through Venzone. With the cemetery full, 42 bodies were placed in the crypt of San Michele chapel. Three centuries later, in 1647, when the crypt was reopened for renovations, the villagers were astonished to find the bodies perfectly mummified. Believing this was a divine sign, the villagers saw their ancestors as protectors, sent back to watch over the town.

For generations, the mummies were honored like village elders, offering guidance and luck to the community. This unique tradition continued until 1950. Today, five of these mummies remain on display in the San Michele chapel, preserving the mysterious and fascinating legacy of Venzoneโ€™s past.

In 2015, archaeologists made an extraordinary discovery in the Champagne region of Franceโ€”a lavishly furnished tomb belonging to a Celtic prince dating back to the 5th century BC. The exact identity of the prince remains unknown, as no inscriptions or written records were found to directly identify him. However, the wealth and grandeur of the burial suggest he held significant power and status.

This burial site, located in Lavau, held incredible artifacts that offered a rare glimpse into the wealth and power of the ancient Celtic elite. The prince was buried with a chariot, surrounded by treasures that included an intricately decorated bronze cauldron, Greek and Etruscan pottery, and a golden torc, one of the most iconic symbols of Celtic royalty. Among the remarkable finds was a unique 5-foot-wide bronze cauldron, adorned with the head of the Greek river god Achelous, featuring large, exaggerated horns. This cauldron, believed to have been imported from Greece or Etruria, likely served a ceremonial purpose for feasts or rituals involving the consumption of wineโ€”a significant luxury among the Celts.

These artifacts suggest the Celts had far-reaching trade connections, even with Mediterranean cultures, highlighting their significance in early European history. The discovery of the tomb not only sheds light on the burial practices and craftsmanship of the time but also reinforces the Celtic tribes' sophisticated status during the Iron Age.

Cernunnos (thought to be Celtic: โ€œHorned Oneโ€) is the Celtic god of fertility, life, animals, wealth, and the underworld. He is widely worshipped as the โ€œlord of wild things.โ€ He wears stag antlers and is sometimes accompanied by a stag and by a sacred ram-horned serpent that is also a deity in its own right. He wears and sometimes also holds a torque, the sacred neck ornament of Celtic gods and heroes.
