William Butler, (1535β1618) a man with no official medical degree and who was known to be an eccentric drunkard, somehow became known as the 'greatest physician of his age'. His miracle "purging" remedy (that apparently cured physical ailments) was sold in his various pubs. Be he a con artist or genuine, tales such as this are an important insight into the stranger parts of British Pub history.
