All of the experiences I had during this last month have been great. (More detailed reflection post later, sorry)

I am off to US for my spring semester now.

I do not have many friends, neither do I try to make many, but I am so lucky to have the ones who when they speak of me or my small accomplishments, they smile with honor, sincerity, and wish the best for me. I will be forever grateful for having them and will do my best to be on their side in both good and bad days!

Thank you all and will try to write frequently!

P.s. I will respond my DMs as much as I can till flight takes off or will do once I land. Appreciate your patience and understanding!

Once in a while, I talk with someone in Singapore who met Freshman students at the Ivy League and other top universities.

"Oh, this kid's a minor celebrity! Everyone knows them,"

I hear at times and then learn the most unhinged and wild stories about our guys.

I don't know what to make of their legendary status reaching the Singapore shores.

The aesthetics, the space, the peopleโ€”an evening can feel like reading a transformative book.

Meeting Yale-NUS alumni, especially now in post-grad life, has always been a pleasure.

No matter how far apart life may throw us, our shared memories and the intellectual journey we took ties us back together.

On Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is unacceptable. Sure. But also, most of the time, it is unbelievably innocuous.

I used to be somewhat irrationally outspoken before I unfortunately "grew up." So, I received my fair share of internet attacks.

Guess what? None of them, and I mean it, resulted in any real threats in the real world.

Funnily, I even met one of those passionate attackers at a grocery store the next day. Let me say he was a lot more cordial face-to-face.

You see, really dangerous people would almost never signal an attack. Like tigers, they will crawl behind your back. And it is over before you know it.

It is the small animals, and I am not pointing my fingers at anyone, this time. It is they who need to overcompensate by mimicking threats simply because they have little leverage over you.

Moral of the story? Never cyberbully. You automatically lose. It's petty. It's childish. It never works as intended.

And, like in poker, you give away your bad hand.

โšก๏ธAdmissions Season 2025

Hyped for the 2025 season. We have quite a few success stories to post.

We will rework the Admissions Program following last year's curriculum transformation. Same for the Full Support.

We hope to start working with Singapore students and strengthen our efforts in Kazakhstan and China.

Also, we will launch at least one tech product, which is now in the works.

Still traveling across Vietnam with my childhood friends but will return to full capacity at the beginning of next week.

Expect a Freshman Program launch soon.

In general, we have been really lucky to work with talented students but also genuinely nice people who care about each other and their communities. Yeah, the admissions season's slow ending brings out some emotions.

โš ๏ธ Stop Using ChatGPT in Personal Statements

It's obvious when you do:

โ€”Overdramatic tone not backed up by specific examples
โ€”Low density of meaning with many words and little substance
โ€”Polished to the point your character does not come through
โ€”Cliche wording, such as "kaleidoscope of experiences," "traditions woven into every stitch," "what started as a small group turned into a vibrant movement," etc.
โ€”Generic metaphors and ideas, such as "seeds grew into a tree," "music is a universal language," etc.

By using ChatGPT, you actively undermine your admissions chances into selective universities, submitting essays that are:

Soulless. Voiceless. Devoid of meaning.

@valeranotes

Valera Notes

"Congratulations on your first rejection! It's always special."

Trust me, I would know after getting 20+ rejections across two years before I got a single acceptance.

Rejections suck, but they can either demotivate you or wake you up and propel you to grow. I prefer the latter.

Unfortunately, I don't have good news for Yale College's students and fans.

We came very close but, unfortunately, fell short this year.

A few more decisions are out soon. And we have a few more acceptances to announce and cover.

Now, back to sleep and, tomorrow, back to meetings.

Work hard and have no expectations. Such is the nature of the process.

โšก๏ธViral Harvard Acceptance Reaction

Many of you commented that my reaction to Azizbek's acceptance was totally unhingedโ€”ahah, fair enough!

But behind each acceptance I celebrate, I have seen hundreds of rejections, broken dreams, and sleepless nights.

Admissions field is brutal and humbling. It's a rat race. It's painful and anxiety-filled for my students and me by extension.

Even after previous Ivy acceptances, each one remains special. I will never take them for granted. Working with our students, I witness them vulnerable, confused, and hopeful.

They become like my siblings, with all its good and bad. Knowing what it takes, I have to put a ton of pressure on them. It's not always easy, and they may not like me for it in the moment. But that's what they need to grow.

When you watch the video, remember: selective acceptances are an exception, not a rule. For each successful case, there are tears and broken dreams of thousands of deserving students who did not make it.

And yet, even a tiny chance of changing one's life is worth the risk.

๐ŸฅฒSAT English Distribution (UPennโ€™s example)

Stay skeptical when admissions offices claim that โ€œthey consider your exam scores in your unique contexts.โ€

Above is the distribution of SAT scores among UPennโ€™s admitted students. (Source: Common Data Set).

Evidently, only 5% of admitted students received 699 or lower on the SAT English section.

Who are these 5%? I suspect those are athletes, donors, or students who can compensate with A-levels, IBs, or APs.

Your GPA and SAT is, essentially, the first line of defense:

It is never, and I mean it, the reason why someone gets admitted. But it is surely the cause of why many peopleโ€™s applications donโ€™t even get to the admissions officersโ€™ tables.

Admissions is brutal. But it is not like we did not know it.

@valeranotes

Valera Notes

"I just don't perform well on the SAT" are the words that I often hear from students.

Having retaken the SAT five times in 2017, I know how negative self-talk builds up with each attempt.

If you are taking the exam, fall asleep tonight with the mindset that you will give your all tomorrow.

The SAT is the closest experience you have ever had to the American education. Exam preparation equipped you for rigorous undergraduate academics.

Leave for the test center while being curious about what you will learn and excited that you will be challenged.

Hype yourself up. Deliver the best you can. And, as always, have fun!

Full Support 2024: Two More Slots for RD

Because of limited capacity, Full Support applications took us many weeks, if not months, to process.

I worried about our output as a team to devote dozens of hours working on each case.

As Sega and Mishael assumed full-time positions at Freshman, I feel confident we can take a few more cases.

As such, we have streamlined the review and interview process and will share our decision within 24 hours of your application.

Apply on the website, so our team will start working with you asap:

A Yale-NUS graduate and Freshman's second full-time employee, Mishael arrived in Singapore yesterday.

With our increased capacity, I think of potentially admitting a few more Full Support students for this cycle.

On another note, a member of the Alumni Network is coming to Singapore in Novemberโ€”the office will soon host our first guest.

The next few months will be action-packed and volatile. I hope our vigorous push into Singapore will be worth it.

โœˆ๏ธ Urgent business trip on a two-day notice.

The last few weeks have been rough:

1) Logistics of hiring and boarding a new full-time employee

2) Furnishing the New Office and preparing for the Freshmanโ€™s 5th Birthday

3) New Admission Program for 50+ students, sponsored by the Youth Agency

4) Re-building Freshmanโ€™s Media team and re-designing the website.

5) Meetings for the Full Support and Admissions Programs. (Lagging on my July Program meetings. But when this happens, I try to compensate with additional meetings).

This is just the tip of the iceberg of all the tasks I had to be engaged in. A bit overwhelming, but I know I can do better.

๐Ÿ“ˆOn Score Inflation

In short, the IELTS is meant to measure your English level. Yet, it often estimates your test-taking skills, not representative of your linguistic ability.

I argue that the seeming increase in scores only partially reflects genuine improvement in the command of English.

Muhammad Ali and I agree that enhanced scores reflect the progress in English skills and test-taking domains.

Yet, we seem to disagree on which of these two factors are more or less salient in driving this growth.

My Promised Books List

The first four books would not take much toll on your mental state. If anything, they will sway you away from nihilism plaguing the intellectual circles.

The rest of the list is a no-go zone without having an experienced guide helping you navigate the sheer density of provocative ideas and social-matrix-shattering perspectives.

๐Ÿ“šSocratic Dialogues, including "Euthyphro," "Meno," "Phaedo," and "Apology."

๐Ÿ“šAlain de Botton's The Consolations of Philosophy

๐Ÿ“š Fareed Zakaria's In Defense of a Liberal Education
