This is a very deep and painful observation.

Today in the masjid, I saw a middle-aged man working with Yandex Eats, a company which gave good jobs to thousands of people and made our life so much easier.

Companies like Yandex make our lives better and also give people jobs, and the West is full of them. That’s the core tenant of Islam: helping people.

However, we have shrank the religion to just praying and fasting.

Addiction to devices such as smarphones and laptops is on the rise these days, with people devoting to them excessive amounts of spare time. This situation mainly stems from the addictive nature of two kinds of apps: games and social media platfroms, and it is important that steps are taken to channel one's free time into more productive pursuits.

Examining the root causes of the ever-increasing screen time, there are two culprits to blame. One is the advent of social media and its intrusive presence in people's everyday lives. Companies that run these platfroms, such as Meta and Google, invest millions of dollars in Research and Development with one single aim in mind: making their products as engaging as possible. This research involes finding out the most effective triggers that force users to keep coming back to the said websites, often causing them to waste a lot of their free time.

Another reason is related to gaming platforms, which deploy more or less the same strategy of creating addictive gameplay. Modern gaming apps are all designed to grab the attention of players in a way that is difficult to resist. They start out very simple in order to allow more people to enjoy the winning sensation, but gradually become harder so that gamers don't lose their interest. This and other manipulative tactics employed by creators glue millions of people around the world to their smarphones and similar gadgets.

To counter these problems, people should take the following measures. Firstly, they should try using special apps built to help users spend their time more productively. These can easily be found on App Store and cost little to no money to install, and their primary function is to limit your screen time by blocking distractive applications discussed in the previous paragraphs.

Another effective remedy is to seek counsel from professionals who deal with addictions. More often than not, how people spend their leisure time is not actually in their hands, just like alcohol addicts are not capable of controlling their impulse to imbibe, without them realizing it. This form of addiction requires professional help, and thankfully, there are numerious organizations worldwide that specifically aid people trapped in their devices.

In conclusion, prolonged screen time can be attributed to the addictive contents of gaming and social media platfroms. The way forward is to utilize apps designed to curb our screen time, and in severe cases, people should turn to companies that focus on recovering from addictions.

In some countries, the numbers of children aged 15 and younger are increasing dramatically.
What are the current and future effects of an ever-increasing population?

Numerous countries around the world are seeing a significant growth in the population of their youth these days. This development leads to a number of adverse effects both now and in the future, which range from a possible rise in crime rates, excessive pressure on public facilities, to escalating property prices and resource depletion.

One of the main repercussions of an ever-increasing population is strain on infrastructure. As the population of countries grows, the demand for many facilities, such as public transport, schools, and hospitals, goes up accordingly. This puts an enormous pressure on local governments, often causing various problems like traffic congestion or even the collapse of the whole system in worst case scenario.

Another problem that stems from this situation is increased criminal activity, especially among the children and teenagers. This is because young people have a tendency to turn to crime as they are not fully mature to grasp the gravity of their actions, and thanks to their curiosity to try out new things. For example, I read an article on statista.com which mentioned that 123,000 violent crimes in the USA are perpetrated by the youths between the ages of 12 and 17, a scary consequence of growing population.

When it comes to future effects, the foremost of them would be soaring prices for housing. When these young people grow up, they are likely to move out from their parental home, which entails renting or acquiring a new place. Either way, this will raise the cost of accommodation in addition to putting pressuring on city planners to provide their residents with adequate housing.

Furthermore, the rise in population can result in resource scarcity and potential conflicts for these resources. This is particularly true for developing nations where water, oil, and other natural resources are limited or in high demand. A case in point would be the countries located near water bodies (e.g. the river Neil) such as Egypt and Ethiopia whose populations are surging. With both countries trying to use as much water as possible, the tension between them is growing, which could eventually give rise to armed conflict or a full-scale war.

In conclusion, the outcomes of ever-rising population are manyfold, and they are mostly negative. In the present, it is putting a serious strain on infrastructure and contributing to crime rates, while in the future it can make property prices skyrocket and exhaust the limited resources.

IELTS language is everywhere; learn to notice it.

I believe that there are IELTS-specific words - words that I think every candidate taking the test should know. Words like ‘taxpayer money,’ ‘carbon footprint,’ or ‘juvenile delinquency.’ Not knowing these types of words means that you might fail to demonstrate the breadth of your vocabulary.

If you look at the sentence in bold, you can identify two useful things related to Task 1.

'Nearly 80% of Americans over the age of 12 are now aware of podcasts — up more than 30% from a decade ago.’

What are they?

Most domestic animals are naturally social. Their wild ancestors lived in groups, with individuals responding to each other – some led, others followed. In domestic animals, the tendency to submit to others is especially strong. Generations of breeding have encouraged them to let people take the lead.

Can you identify the advanced sentence structure (underlined) used above and explain how it can be used in Task 1?

Q: Why is General English often neglected in test prep classrooms, especially when preparing for exams like IELTS?

A: Most language learning should take place outside the classroom.

Here is what you can do to improve your general English skills:

1. Reading at least one article a day can help you improve your English significantly! There are a number of great sources but if you are uncertain, just read through the passages in Cambridge practice books.

2. Start watching a TV show (preferably a sitcom) in English!
SUITS is the most widely
recommended sitcom, but it may not be for everyone else. So, if you want to watch something else, here is some food for thought!

3. Listen to a podcast of your interest
. My favorite podcast apps used to be 'Podcast Republic' and 'Google Podcasts'; now I'm using 'Apple Podcasts'. Just download one of these apps, and subscribe to a few podcasts. My all time favorite is '50 Things That Made the Modern Economy' by Tim Harford.

This is a fun way of learning English, but you should also be studying grammar and vocabulary from books of your choice.

The whole report:

The line graph shows changes in the amount of per capita CO2 emissions produced by 4 European countries between 1967 and 2007. Overall, while the UK and Sweden started as the highest emitters, their emissions declined over the period. Conversely, Italy and Portugal experienced steadily increasing trends, with the initial gap between countries considerably shrinking over the study period.

In 1967, the United Kingdom was the largest producer of CO2, producing on average around 11 metric tons (MT) of CO2 per person. Over the subsequent four decades, the UK's emissions gradually declined, ending the period at approximately 9 metric tons. Sweden followed a similar pattern but with a more pronounced initial increase. Its emissions rose sharply from 8.5MT to over 10MT in 1977 before falling significantly to below 6MT by 2007.

Italy and Portugal, starting from lower emission levels, experienced substantial growth. Italy's emissions increased significantly from just over 4 metric tons in 1967 to nearly 8MT in 1997, plateauing thereafter. Portugal's emissions followed a similar trajectory, rising from slightly above 1MT to over 5MT in 1997. By the end of the period, Portugal's emissions converged with Sweden's.

#OCTOBER13
#COMMONMISTAKESINMOCKWRITING

1️⃣ Task 1 was about losing hearing ability, and most people wrote "loose hearing". Lose and loose have different meanings.

lose (v) - be deprived of or cease to have or retain (something).
I've lost my appetite
loose (adj) - (of a garment) not fitting tightly or closely.
she slipped into a loose T-shirt

2️⃣ The best word to show the start of an overview paragraph is Overall or In general.

Most candidates go for overly lengthy options such as "From an overall perspective, it can be readily seen that.." or "what stands out from the graph is that". Neither of these adds any substance to your overview. My suggestion is to simply start with "Overall" and write the first key feature - the most general one, if possible.

3️⃣ Another common mistake relates to the selection of the verb in the introduction. I am sure your examiner doesn't care much for the introduction, so there is no point in trying to impress or show off here. So words like "elaborate" or "dilienate" or "demonstrate" are not any better than "show" or "compare". So please stick to normal words.

4️⃣ The next problem also relates to the obsession with overparaphrasing. Candidates want to start each sentence with some sort of cohesive device, sometimes so much so that they want to come up with harder alternatives to fixed bridging words like "To begin with" and write "To commence with", which makes no sense. Some candidates even wrote "By way of an example" instead of "For example". These "harder" alternatives are doing more harm than good.

P.S. The list can be longer, but I have a place to go. Wait for the post about the common mistakes made in the reports/essays written by candidates who took the mock test today at our center.
