1. This is a practice-based course, which means you are already expected to have some knowledge of how Task 1 is dealt with. There won't be much theory. All I do is to walk you through real exam questions and provide you with relevant vocabulary and ideas.

2. The course is fully asynthronous, meaning you won't have live classes. All the necessary pieces of information will be taught in video explanations and posts.

3. I will not be your babysitter in this course in that you should be the one to study. Don't expect to be spoonfed in my courses โ€“ my methodology is that students should do the studying.

4. I will not guarantee you a Band 7+ if you complete this course. Nor will we accept students with such requests.

5. As a VIP member, you will get all of your essays checked, so long as you submit your work within the given deadline of 12 hours. You can expect your essays to be corrected within 24 hours of your submission time.

6. All the tasks will be shared at 9.00PM everyday, except for Sunday โ€“ Sunday is fun day. You should complete all the assignments by the next day the same time. There's really not that much workload, with each day's tasks probably taking about 2 hours.

I have been teaching exam preparation exclusively, working mostly with higher levels, for almost eight years now. Over this time, I have worked with a ๐’„๐’๐’๐’”๐’Š๐’…๐’†๐’“๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’๐’† ๐’๐’–๐’Ž๐’ƒ๐’†๐’“ ๐’๐’‡ outstanding students, many of whom have achieved remarkable results in various exams. ๐‘จ ๐’”๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’๐’Š๐’‡๐’Š๐’„๐’‚๐’๐’• ๐’‘๐’๐’“๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’ ๐’๐’‡ what we cover is, of course, related to vocabulary, with its ๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’–๐’๐’…๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’† of collocations and idioms. Yet, hardly a month goes by without me correcting the word ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐š in one of my students' essays.

Donโ€™t get me wrong. Plethora, like ๐’„๐’๐’–๐’๐’•๐’๐’†๐’”๐’” other words in English, certainly exists and is used. After all, there are no inherently bad words in Englishโ€”only contexts where they are used inappropriately. The problem is that plethora does not mean many. Most students come across this word in extensive lists of so-called advanced vocabulary, which YouTube is full of. Some of these lists are even adopted by teachers who, in their attempt to introduce their students to sophisticated words, sacrifice natural usage in favour of pompous complexity. Run from those teachers. Run for your life.

Exam or no exam, English is a means of communication. The primary goal of language learning should be to acquire practical and natural skills that students can use in real-life contexts. Keep in mind that sophistication is never a requirement in any examination. What exams assess is the accurate use of less common lexis, ensuring that candidates can discuss abstract topics and convey precise meanings. ๐๐ฅ๐ž๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐š is a wonderful wordโ€”but only when describing ๐’‚๐’ ๐’‚๐’Ž๐’๐’–๐’๐’• ๐’•๐’‰๐’‚๐’• ๐’Š๐’” ๐’ˆ๐’“๐’†๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’“ ๐’•๐’‰๐’‚๐’ ๐’๐’†๐’„๐’†๐’”๐’”๐’‚๐’“๐’š ๐’๐’“ ๐’†๐’™๐’„๐’†๐’”๐’”๐’Š๐’—๐’†. The closest synonym to plethora is certainly not manyโ€”itโ€™s excess.

Safina participated in my online full IELTS course dating to November of last year. I am proud to have contributed to her progress in some way or another โ€“ she updated her score to an 8.0, up from a 7.0 a few years ago. Given her incredible English, though, it is a little disheartening, at least to me, that she was robbed of an otherwise achievable Band 8.5 due to her speaking being misjudged.

I wish her all the best with her future endeavors, seeing as she is a big fan of grinding.

BAND 9 OVERVIEW

Overall, doctor numbers steadily increased throughout the period in question. Male doctors consistently outnumbered their female counterparts, although the gender gap narrowed over time. A similar pattern can be seen in the ratio of* native to foreign-born doctors.

Fun fact: This is the 2nd time I am scoring straight 9.0s in Task 2, and the best part is โ€“ the essay wasn't even that good. What I have come to understand, having taken the test umpteen times, is that you keep exposing yourself to English over a long period and your outputโ€“ that is your speaking and writing โ€“ gets better intuitively. It's not about whether you do one thing over an X amount of time that gets you to your destination; it's the combination of everything you are doing that then manifests itself on the exam day. So, for those of you looking for some off-the-shelf advice, I am sorry โ€“ there is none. You ensure constant immersion in the language and there you have it โ€“ Band 9.0 at long last. For crying out loud, I didn't use Chat GPT, some cool tricks or anything. I just stuck with the old school method of "eat, sleep, and train".

For whatever reason, in this day and age we have this ever increasing trend of teachers trying to create their own classroom materials and whatnot, and myself is no exception. For too long now have I been trapped in this very swirling vortex. But then it dawned on me โ€“ why should I have to reinvent the wheel when I have the real deal right at my fingertips? I'm sure the same is true for many teachers โ€“ they think they know better; they don't want to resort to a third-party material and think that their students need a personalized approach of sorts. Well, let me tell you โ€“ the professionals have taken care of all this. A textbook created by a credible institution like Cambridge University is subject to years of research, trial, and editing. What makes you think you are better than them? My suggestion is that you actually take the time to study the program of a given textbook well enough to teach effectively โ€“ much too often teachers barely flip through their material. Read the teacher's book (if one is available), watch teacher trainer sessions, and etc. Here is a recommended textbook for Pre-IELTS: Complete IELTS 4-5

Do your due dilligence; see what works for you first and go all in.

๐ŸŽž WATCHING MATERIAL FOR 2025

#replay

A surefire way to up your English skills and, by extension, your IELTS score is to immerse yourself in content that the English-speaking folk themselves regularly engage with. Not those modified and scripted videos for ESL learners such as 6-minute English or Ted-Ed. But the real deal. So, with the new year just knocking on our doors, let me bestow upon you a gift that promises to be a game changer in your exam prep. The list below features some of the best video sources you can ever get your hands on. I've scoured the whole of YouTube for these channels, so make good use of them.

LastWeekTonight โ€“ when academic meets comedic
Big Think โ€“ big ideas through the lense of experts
The Well โ€“ a spin-off of Big Think, where professors sit down for a lengthy lecture
BBC Ideas โ€“ the only BBC content worth watching
Veritasium โ€“ a simple man with thirst for science
Cleo Abram โ€“ an Internet sensation with amazing delivery
First We Feast โ€“ best interview host and best English
Kurzgesagt โ€“ finely animated educational videos
penguinz0 โ€“ weird reaction videos featuring out-of-this-world English
Great Big Story โ€“ an unlimited source of ideas and language
Vsauce โ€“ a seemingly eccentric beardy guy who questions everything

There are, of course, countless other sources you can follow, but these are my personal favorites. Instead of watching the videos for fun, be sure to squeeze as much language and ideas out of them as you possibly can. This is how I recommend you study:

1๏ธโƒฃ WATCH AND PAUSE โ€“ it is essential that you make an effort to understand what you listen to. This is, after all, how you improve your listening comprehension.

2๏ธโƒฃ NOTE-TAKING โ€“ take notes of any nice language and ideas that come your way, even if you know them.

3๏ธโƒฃ RECYCLE โ€“ to put the new words and ideas you've just learned into practice, you should try summarizing the content, either written or spoken. This ensures language activation, as hopeless as you might feel at first.

As trite as reflection posts are at this point, here I am typing away at my keyboard ever so hurriedly, mulling over the many ways this post could be written. Yet I will keep things short and sweet, with the bulk of my message centering on gratitude:

To my mom, for being the most supportive and understanding mother in the whole wide world; To my first English teachers, from Faxriddin Topilov to Baxtiyor To'xtaboyev, for laying the ground for what is now the finest feat of achievement โ€“ Band 9. To Diyorbek Hayitmurodov, my colleague, mentor, and so many other things, for showing his unwavering support from day 1, pyschologically and otherwise. To everyone else who has cheered me on for the past year and beyond! Thank you! Couldn't have done it without you.

To say that Band 9.0 was my sole focus in 2024 is a gross understatment. Not a day went by that I didn't dream of finally getting my hands on it โ€“ not for the reasons you might have in mind, though. In any case, I am grateful I've come this far, and with this band 9.0 under my belt, I hope to benefit even more students and teachers for many more years to come!

Real exam, Dec 21, CDI

BAND 9 SAMPLE ANSWER

The table compares large-scale and small-scale fishing industries across various metrics, including employment, catch volumes, capital costs, fuel consumption, efficiency, and environmental impacts.

Firstly, in terms of employment, small-scale fishing provides jobs to over 12 million people, significantly surpassing the 500,000 employed in large-scale fishing. Despite this, large-scale fishing has a much higher capital cost per job, ranging from $90,000 to $300,000, compared to only $250 to $2,500 in small-scale fishing. Furthermore, small-scale fishing provides significantly more jobs per $1 million invested, with 500โ€“4,000 compared to 5โ€“30 in large-scale operations.

Regarding the annual catch for human consumption, small-scale fishing is slightly less productive, catching 24 million tonnes compared to the 29 million tonnes caught by large-scale operations. However, large-scale fishing also catches an additional 22 million tonnes for industrial purposes, while small-scale fishing contributes almost none in this category.

Fuel consumption shows a stark contrast, with large-scale fishing using 14โ€“19 million tonnes annually, whereas small-scale operations consume only 1โ€“2.5 million tonnes. Despite their higher fuel use, large-scale operations are less efficient, catching only 2โ€“5 tonnes of fish per tonne of fuel consumed, compared to 10โ€“20 tonnes in small-scale fishing.

Environmental impact is another key difference. Large-scale fishing destroys 6โ€“16 million tonnes of fish annually as by-catch in shrimp fisheries, while small-scale operations report no such by-catch destruction.

In conclusion, while large-scale fishing is more productive overall, small-scale fishing is more fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly, and provides greater employment opportunities at a lower cost per job.

The table details the amount of milk produced in four countries from 1990 to 2010 at ten-year intervals. Overall, the Netherlands and Australia produced significantly higher quantities of milk than Tanzania and Guatemala, and the general trend was for all countries to increase their milk production except Australia.

The Netherlands consistently led milk production, with an initial output of 11,262,000 liters. Despite a slight fall by about a hundred thousand in 2000, it then reached 11,466,000 liters in 2010, a record high figure. In contrast, Australia, which had the second largest milk output, experienced an overall decline, from above the 11-million mark in the first two years to 9,165,000 liters in the final year.

At the bottom end of the scale, Tanzania and Guatemala produced two orders of magnitude lower quantities of milk. Despite this, they both exhibited substantial increases โ€“ the former surged to 142,000 from 87,000 liters, followed by a smaller rise to 155,000; meanwhile, Guatemala, country with the lowest milk production, steadily increased such that it had almost quadrupled by 2010 (from 26,000 to 84,000 liters)

One frosty morning last year, I found myself walking along a lake near my old primary schoolโ€”the same lake that would once freeze solid with the immediate arrival of winter. Gulzoda took my one-on-one course, updating her 7.5 to 8.0 in a month. We did weekly speaking and writing correction sessions, and she did daily homework on her own.

She says she was stuck in 6.5 on Writing.

Feruzaxon studied in my IELTS Standard course for about 2 months this summer, where we mostly focused on writing and speaking. Sure enough she did an amazing job in these components. She will be retaking the reading section, as we were hoping for something higher. #results2024

Shahrizoda never skipped a day of my Intensive group, staying after classes to do her homework. While we were expecting higher scores for Listening and Reading, she must have got the exam jitters โ€“ she was scoring 7.5 in each towards the end of the course. But her speaking... It's next level! #results2024

I already appealed my Writing and Speaking, hoping for a change of at least 0.5 in either. Now this doesn't necessarily get me any closer to 9.0 than I already am, but it will be a nice dopamine boost โ€“ seeing another 8.0 in my writing, I mean; 7.5 is a joke...

About that 8.5 in Speaking... Tim broke my heart. I really thought we had something special going on; I guess he played it safe for political reasons, seeing as he had given me a 9.0 before.

Simon Sinek, Adam Grant, Brenรฉ Brown, Malcolm Gladwell, Alain de Botton, and Angela Duckworthโ€”all are compelling public speakers and writers.

Their genius lies in their ability to draw on personal experiences to deliver impactful, relatable ideas. Their speeches and books arenโ€™t merely collections of facts but are vast repertoires of practical insights generated through pattern recognition and synthesis.

The future belongs to curious synthesizers. Let AI handle data collection while you focus on connecting the dots to solve big problems and create novel ideas.

To do this, adopt two powerful habits: read widely and consistently, and recycle what you learn by writing regularly on diverse topics.

One of the easiest ways to practice both?

TO THE SAVED MESSAGES ๐Ÿš€

Ulug'bek Umidjonov

The pie charts show the proportion of people of different age groups using Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. Overall, a similar pattern can be seen across all these apps: while adults and the middle aged used social media the most, the reverse was true for the youngest and oldest categories.

On Facebook, the 35-49 age group ranked first, with 30% of all Facebook users falling under this category, which was followed closely by the 18-34 bracket, at 29%. Then came the 50-64 and 10-17 age groups with respective figures of 19% and 14%. The oldest demographic, however, ranked last, accounting for a mere 8% of total usership.

YouTube almost exactly mirrored this pattern. While all age groups maintained the positions seen with Facebook, the figures on YouTube were higher or lower by 1-3 percentage points.

Twitter, however, bucked the foregoing trend / was an exception. In particular, it was the 18-34 demographic that took the lead here, constituting a whopping 40% of all users. This corresponded with even lower percentages of the oldest and youngest age groups, at 9% and 4%, respectively. In contrast, the intermediate categories (35-49 and 40-64) stood at similar levels to those in Facebook and YouTube.
