Financial Stability Report (FSR) Highlights:

The global economy and the financial system remain resilient. While near-term risks have receded, vulnerabilities such as stretched asset valuations, high public debt, prolonged geopolitical conflicts and risks from emerging technologies pose medium term risks to financial stability.

The Indian economy and the domestic financial system are underpinned by strong macroeconomic fundamentals, healthy balance sheets of banks and non-banks.

The soundness of scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) has been bolstered by strong profitability, declining non-performing assets and adequate capital and liquidity buffers. Return on assets (RoA) and return on equity (RoE) are at decadal highs while the gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio has fallen to a multi-year low.

Macro stress tests demonstrate that most SCBs have adequate capital buffers relative to the regulatory minimum even under adverse stress scenarios. Stress tests also validate the resilience of mutual funds and clearing corporations.

Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) remain healthy with sizable capital buffers, robust interest margins and earnings and improving asset quality.

The consolidated solvency ratio of the insurance sector also remains above the minimum threshold limit.

To bankers preparing for RBI exam

Banking jobs have become quite demanding in the recent past.

Especially after you complete your probation period, things become all the more challenging.

RBI aspirants are not able to focus on preparation (because of work pressure) and are not able to enjoy the bank job as well.

In such a scenario, leaving the bank job to prepare for the RBI Grade B exam seems to be the only way out.

However, this may not be a wise decision.

Even if you reach the interview stage (clearing phase l and phase ll) after leaving your job, the RBI Interview board is critical of such a decision.

This might hamper your chances getting final selection thereby defeating the whole purpose of leaving your job in the first place.

Then what to do?

RBI Grade B exam, with a limited number of seats and its elaborate pattern, has become quite dicey over the years.

So, what can be done is from now- give 6 months to the preparation. Make tight schedules and try to follow them despite the work pressure.

You can get up early in the morning (3/4 AM) and devote 03 hours to preparation every single day.

If you are consistent, this is quite sufficient to get a good score in the RBI exam. Also, your consistent preparation will enhance your confidence which will eventually improve your performance in your current job as well.

(For amid the hustle bustle of preparation and life in general, you may need it on some days)

*

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

QR Topics for tomorrow (13.11.2024- Day 02)

(Next set of target to be shared tomorrow night).

Quant- Profit and Loss (PL)

Relevance- Every year, 01 question (01 mark) is asked in the phase l exam.

The level of question is generally moderate. A typical PL question can take around 2-3 minutes to solve in the exam scenario.

At times, table based DI (4-5 questions) is also asked on this topic.

The topic is conceptual and includes a number of formulae.

If you are able to master it, then you can always score marks in this area.

*

Reasoning- Inequalities

Relevance:- 2-3 questions are asked every year

Level is easy to moderate and you can target these questions to clear the sectional cut-off.

(It is considered a counterpart of syllogism. The topics are asked interchangeably in either shift.).

*

Links to prepare shared/recommended in the PMP group.

(I will keep posting the targets so that you can also align your preparation).

How to tackle Quant in RBI Grade B Phase l? :-

• Total marks/questions- 30
• Total questions- 25

Approx break up of questions-

1. Data Interpretation:- 15 questions (5*3 sets of DI)

2. Miscellaneous:- 10 questions (SI/CI, PL, Boats and Streams, Probability, Work and time, ages, averages, mixture and alligation, mensuration, pipes and cirstens etc)

3. Other questions- 05 (Quadratic Equation, Simplification and number series).

*
Trend-

The difficulty level of the questions is tough in the past 03 years.

So, the idea is to clear the sectional cut-off in quant so that you can move to the next stage.

25% sectional cut-off (7.5/30) should be a safe bet.

The approach-

1. Scan through all the 30 questions in the initial 1-2 minutes of the quant section.

2. Try to find out 01 Data Interpretation that you think is worth doing.

Generally, pie charts or bar graph based DIs ...read more on the PMP group (tuition approach to RBI Grade B)

Minutes of the session (#1) of RBI PMP 2025 held on 05.11.2024

Tackling Phase l General Awareness

1. General Awareness (GA) is a key pillar of Phase l exam preparation.

There is a need to integrate General Awareness with the Phase ll ESI objective (Schemes-10 questions, RBI circulars- 20 questions, Reports and Indexes- 5/6 questions).

2. No matter how difficult the phase l GA is, it is possible to score 30/80 marks and that is enough to clear phase l even if the total number of seats are 60-70.

Profile building for the interview

3. It is important to start working on your profile to avoid any last minute setbacks.

If you are not working currently, in addition to RBI preparation, it is recommended to appear for SBI/IBPS PO exams as well.

It helps in giving you the desired confidence for the phase l exam.

Tackling Quant and Reasoning

4. Those who are struggling with Quant and Reasoning, try to devote around 30 minutes everyday (starting 01 topic/04-05 questions a day). This can be done in addition to the phase ll preparation (from 04 months phase ll planner- starting from January onwards).

Time management for working candidates

5. Working candidates should try to utilise 2-3 hours in the morning before leaving for work. Then revise the morning content for 1-2 hours after returning from work. This should give you enough confidence if you are able to do it on a consistent basis.

For new Bankers

6. If you are new to the Banking industry and your CAIIB exam clashes with the RBI Preparation. For the time being, you can focus on your RBI exam. CAIIB preparation can follow once you have gain decent confidence in the RBI exam.

Place: Mumbai

Profile: M.Tech Industrial and Management Engineering,
IIT Kanpur (2018), 21 months work ex in Strategy and 2.5 years gap for regulatory exam preparation.

Singhal Sir: You did masters in technical field and after that your were working then why did you leave the job?

Me: To prepare for RBI Grade B and other regulatory bodies
He: Why regulatory bodies and not other IBPS exams?
Me (fumbled): Because of work diversity.

He: what is the difference between law and regulations?

Me (again fumbled): Laws are made first and then regulations are made under them.

He made a poker face.
Me: That is the difference between act and law that I said.
Chairman sir left after that and never came back.

M1: Why are you attracted towards RBI? (Don't remember the exact question but something similar to this).

Me: RBI is promoting many innovations in financial sector like regulatory sandbox and innovation hub. Also many iniatives for financial inclusion in recent times.

M1: What is innovation hub?
Me: answered.
M1: Any recent work of RBI?
Me: Talked about card tokenisation and some cross questions over it.
M1: What are capital inflows?
Me: Talked about domestic investments and FPIs and FDIs.
Mam: Asked about my job profile.
Mam: Why forex reserves are declining? Are they sufficient? What constitutes forex reserves? And some cross questions over it.
M2: Again some questions on job profile. What is strategy?
Me: Gave a bookish definition. He asked me to explain in simple terms.
M2: What is vision and mission?
Me: Answered
M2: Which comes first vision or mission?

Me: I got confused and gave wrong answer then he asked me are you sure? I said as far I remember then he corrected me.

M2: Why didn't you prepare for Civil Services?
Me: not much inclination towards administrative fields.

M3: But you will require that in RBI too.
Me: I can learn if the job demands. He interrupted and said it's not about learning. I tried to cover it by saying that I found this exam pattern to be more suitable.

M3: You said about regulation that attracts you towards RBI and when asked you said about innovations and financial inclusion which are the development roles.
Why this contradiction?

Me (That came as a complete bouncer): Said both the roles attract me towards RBI and said something to substantiate.

M3: What are the regulation functions of RBI?
Me: Regulator of financial system and regulator of payment and settlement systems.

M3: On which four parameters are bank evaluated?
Me: RBI currently evaluates banks on PCA framework which has three parameters which I explained.

M3: What should be the fourth parameter?
Me: Profitability
M3: How it is measured?
Me: explained about net interest margin
M3: There are other ways of earnings for bank as well why net interest margin?
Me: I talked about other earnings of bank and said net interest margin comes from core function of the bank
M3: What will happen if net interest margin becomes low?
Me: I said profitability will reduce and said may lead to bank run( I was not sure). When asked the reason why it may lead to bank run, I gave the reason but It didn't seem a convincing answer.
Then Singhal sir and Mam said me thank you. You can go know
Interview duration: around 17 minutes
It was a nice experience overall.

Chairman sir left within 2 minutes of the interview. Rest members grilled a bit on HR questions which I feel I didn't answer properly.

RBI interview marks scatter plot analysis (2023).

There is a wide variation in marks (ranging from 01-10 to even 70+).

Multiple factors determine how you will be assessed/judged in the RBI interview. These can't be developed overnight.

*

RBI preparation has often been centred around the phase ll preparation. However, there is a need for paradigm shift to include interview preparation/Biodata right from Day 01 of preparation.

This will help in saving one from final despair of not getting enough marks in the interview despite performing really well at the phase ll stage.

The upcoming (here and here) Personal Mentorship Program (PMP) aims to address this challenge. On a case by case basis. Customized. One individual at a time.
