China’s Dam Project on the Brahmaputra

China has initiated plans to build a mega-dam on the Brahmaputra River near the Great Bend, raising environmental and geopolitical concerns in the region.

Project Details

The dam is planned near the Great Bend in Medog County, Tibet, under China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025). It is expected to generate around 60 GW of hydropower, making it the world’s largest, surpassing the Three Gorges Dam. The project uses run-of-the-river technology, limiting water storage while generating significant energy.

Environmental Concerns
1. Downstream Impact: Altered flow patterns could disrupt ecosystems in India’s Brahmaputra basin, affecting agriculture and biodiversity.
2. Disaster Risks: The region’s seismic activity increases the likelihood of landslides, earthquakes, and glacial lake outburst floods.

Geopolitical Implications
1. India-China Tensions: India fears water diversion or manipulation, which could reduce availability downstream.
2. Water Security: Bangladesh and India, dependent on the Brahmaputra, could face severe socio-economic impacts from altered flow patterns.

India’s Response

India has raised the issue diplomatically and is increasing hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh to safeguard its interests. Additionally, India and Bangladesh are collaborating on shared concerns regarding the river’s flow and ecological stability.

The responses to the poll have been truly encouraging, and I’m thrilled to see your enthusiasm! Based on your feedback, I’m excited to announce that we will be starting the program from tomorrow.

_Sometimes your night dreams make you smile. Once I saw a dream where Ratan Tata was interviewing me and finally offering a very fine job in his company. It felt so real and warm. The next day I woke up and I was smiling almost all day thinking about that dream. Today with that smile I would bid him the farewell.
