Retail inflation rate surged to a 14-month high of 6.21 per cent in October with a sharp rise in prices of food items, especially fruits, vegetables, meat and fish, and oils and fats, data released by the National Statistical Office.

Core Contributors to Inflation

Food and Beverages:
โ€” Accounts for 45.86% of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) weight.
โ€” Inflation rose to 9.69% in October from 8.36% in September.

Vegetables:
โ€” Inflation jumped to 42.18% in October, up from 35.99% in September.
โ€” Unseasonal rains and extended monsoons were key contributors.

The October CPI print breaches the RBIโ€™s medium-term inflation target band of 4% ยฑ 2% for the second consecutive month. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has emphasized a cautious approach, reiterating that the neutral stance adopted in October does not imply an imminent rate cut.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued new directives for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to ensure compliance when their equity holdings exceed prescribed limits and are reclassified as foreign direct investment (FDI).

FEM (NDI) Rules, 2019:
- FPIsโ€™ investments should remain below 10% of the total paid-up equity capital (on a fully diluted basis).
- Exceeding this limit requires FPIs to either:
โ€” Divest the excess holdings within five trading days, or
โ€” Reclassify the holdings as FDI.

State Bank of India, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank continue to be identified as Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs) in the 2024 list of this category.

What are the capital requirements for D-SIBs?

โ€” Based on the bucket in which a D-SIB is placed, an additional common equity requirement has to be applied to it. The additional capital requirement ranges from 0.20 per cent to 0.80 per cent of risk weighted assets, depending upon the bucket D-SIBs are plotted into.

โ€” On Wednesday, the RBI said, the additional common equity tier 1 (CET1) requirement as a percentage of Risk Weighted Assets (RWAs) for SBI is 0.80 per cent. The additional fund requirement for HDFC Bank is 0.40 per cent, and that for ICICI Bank is 0.20 per cent.

Banking Sector Shortcomings:
- Fraudsters are leveraging KYC documents of unsuspecting individuals to create mule accounts.
- Gaps in monitoring and verification have been identified, with potential involvement of bank officials.

These fraudsters are using Payment Banks Account, CSP centers of PSBs specially SBI to create such mule account and many a times these accounts are based out of Far reaching areas of North East, LWE districts etc.

Note: In short, if you have lost your money to Fraud, then don't expect it to be returned (Chances of return is 0.001% so make sure you don't get defrauded.)
