Pollination is a crucial process in reproductive cycle of flowering plants in which pollen from male part (anther) transfers to female part (stigma) of a flower. This can occur in two ways:
1. Self-pollination: when pollen from anther of a flower lands on stigma of same /other flower on the same plant. This does not require external agents like wind, water, or animals.
Advantages: Ensures genetic consistency, eliminates need of pollinators and ensures efficient reproduction.
Disadvantages: Lack of genetic diversity, results inbreeding depression.
2. Cross-pollination: when pollen from anther of one flower is transferred to stigma of other flower on different plant of same species through external agents like insects (entomophily), wind (anemophily), water (hydrophily), birds (ornithophily), humans (Anthropophily) or other animals (zoophily).
Advantages: promotes genetic diversity and result in hybrid vigor
Disadvantages: dependence on pollinators and energy intensive
