Imam Hassan Al-Basri, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “there is a group of people whose delusions about being forgiven [without any action] will distract them until they leave this life, and they will not have a single good deed. One will say, “I have a good opinion of my Lord,” but he lies. If he had a good opinion of his Lord, he would have rectified his actions. He then recited the verse, “This was your assumption that you assumed about your Lord. It destroyed you and you were among the losers.” [Al-Fussilat, 23]”

If Allah puts you in a position where you are teaching, then be sincere and want good for your students. You should want them to surpass you, so do not hold back in what you give unless it is for an educational purpose. One should have a goal to get their students to where they are in a shorter period of time than they did so that the student can go on to seek knowledge from those more learned and benefit the ummah more.
You don't teach for yourself; you teach for the sake of Allah and for the ummah. Your students are an amanah from Allah, not extras in a movie where you are the main character.

In the desert here in Adrar, it’s very easy to measure the prayer timings. You can very easily see the disk of the sun dip below the horizon line. When I compared this to my prayer app, the app was early by around 2 minutes. One should expect this in every place.
Shaykh Khalil says:
وإن شك في دخول الوقت لم تجز ولو وقعت فيه
“If one has doubt in the entrance of the time, it [the prayer] is not accepted, even if it [coincidentally] did enter.”
Imam Dardir adds to this, saying that even if someone had dhann (probabilistic belief) that the time came, it still wouldn’t be accepted, unless it was very strong dhann.
More people need to be mindful about this especially when it comes to breaking their fast during Ramadan. Why risk spoiling your fast by two minutes?

Shaykh Hassan is in Inzigmir, less than a quarter mile away from Shaykh Al-Maghili’s madrasa. Both of them were classmates and students of Shaykh Muhammad Bilkabir who without a doubt was a Wali and Qutb. This region called Adrar is huge they said it’s bigger than France and has 600,000 people. The entire city is from the baraka of Shaykh Bilkabir. The airport is even named after him and has a big picture of him, Shaykh Hassan, and Shaykh Al Maghili hung up inside. Shaykh Hassan and Shaykh Al Maghili both teach all the ulum of the Shariah and their madaris are filled with tullab ul ilm focused on memorizing Quran. I’ve never seen so much Quran being recited in a place my entire life. Funny enough, Shaykh Hassan is known for his Tasawwuf and Shaykh Al-Maghili is known for his Fiqh, but Shaykh Hassan is also a mufti at the highest level and Shaykh Al-Maghili is a complete shaykh of Tariqa.

After Maghrib, he does the adhkar with the students, after which he sits and teaches for another 2 hours until Isha. After praying Isha, he returns back to his home and sits with guests again and answers their questions. If someone gives him a bottle of water or their misbah for tabarruk, he recites Quran over it. If someone gives them a lawh (memorization slate), he opens it with beautiful calligraphy of the basmala and Salawat.
After sitting with guests and dinner, he retires to his living quarters where he teaches classes to some students. On certain days, he even teaches between Asr and Maghreb. He has a day reserved for when all the Imams from the province visit him and he teaches them and answers their questions.

Visiting my teacher Shaykh Al-Maghili and Shaykh Hassan Al-Ansari has been a truly incredible experience. I didn’t think that people and lands like this existed anymore. Some observations about what makes them so special:
- How it’s all centered around the Qur’an
- their honoring of guests
- their accessibility and lack of pride
- their tabarruk through the Prophet ﷺ
- the simplicity of their life and transparency. Everyone knows where they are and what they’re doing 24/7
- the amount of Quran they read on a daily basis
- their consistency in dhikr
- their knowledge as fuqaha and ulema at the highest level and ability to apply it
