LEBANON: ANTI ASSAD ACTIVISTS DEMAND RELEASE OF SUNNI PRISONERS
A demonstration has been held in Tripoli, Lebanon, demanding the release of 350 Sunni "Islamist detainees" imprisoned for confronting the Lebanese army amid tensions over the Syria war.
The detainees include Sheikh Ahmad Al Assir and his supporters. Al Assir gained notoriety for his anti-Hezbollah and anti-Asaad stances during the Syrian Civil War.
In June 2013, tensions between Al Assir's supporters and the Lebanese Army led to armed clashes in Sidon. His followers attacked an army checkpoint, leading to a two-day battle that resulted in the deaths of 18 soldiers and over 30 of his supporters.
After these events, Al Asir was accused of forming armed groups, inciting sectarian strife, and killing soldiers.
In 2017, Al Assir was sentenced to death by a military court for his role in the 2013 Sidon clashes. However, this sentence was later commuted to 20 years of hard labour in 2021.

On January 2, Hindu extremists, alongside Revenue Department officials, allegedly raided a mosque in Ambala, Haryana, India.
They demanded the stoppage of construction on the mosque's top floor, alleging it was illegally built on encroached land that was originally a Hindu crematorium.
According to our reporter on the ground in India, the extremists belonged to the Bajrang Dal, a Hindu nationalist militant organisation that forms the youth wing of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).
The ideology of the organisation is based on the sectarian anti-Muslim Hindutva sect.

Nearly 1,000 mosques were damaged in Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip last year, Palestinian authorities said on Sunday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs said 815 Muslim worship places were entirely destroyed and 151 others partially damaged.
The ministry said 19 cemeteries and three churches were also destroyed in Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza in 2024.

The Governor of Damascus, Maher Marwan, has denied promoting peace with Israel after the American NPR media outlet reported that he said Syria wants peace with Tel Aviv.
According to NPR, Marwan said "it was natural" that Israel had concerns about the new Syrian government and that as a result of this fear Israel "advanced a little, bombed a little."
NPR added that Marwan said the new Syrian administration doesn't want "to meddle in anything that will threaten Israel's security."
The Syrian leadership later clarified that Marwan was not speaking on behalf of the government when he made his alleged comments.
The Governor of Damascus, Maher Marwan, has denied promoting peace with Israel after the American NPR media outlet reported that he said Syria wants peace with Tel Aviv.
According to NPR, Marwan said "it was natural" that Israel had concerns about the new Syrian government and that as a result of this fear Israel "advanced a little, bombed a little."
NPR added that Marwan said the new Syrian administration doesn't want "to meddle in anything that will threaten Israel's security."
The Syrian leadership later clarified that Marwan was not speaking on behalf of the government when he made his alleged comments.

Earlier today, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan honoured the Republic's founding father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Ataturk was an arch secularist who abolished the Khilafa and tried to turn Türkiye away from Islam.
The 86th anniversary of his death was commemorated today in a state ceremony at his mausoleum in Ankara.
“August Ataturk, we once again remember your excellency with grace on the 86th anniversary of your passing to eternity," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wrote in the memorial book of Anitkabir.
"We spare no effort to glorify and strengthen the Republic of Türkiye, the legacy of your excellency and our martyrs, in every area, and make it grow bigger in security and stability despite the crises in its near environs," Erdogan added.
“We will neither stop nor rest until we build a Türkiye, where peace, calm, justice, development and brotherhood prevail in every inch of our country. May you rest in peace!," the president wrote.

We understand that in situations like this, the wider public can have questions and rumours abound, so AlMaghrib Institute is issuing this second statement to correct some misinformation around the criminal allegations of Wisam Sharieff.
1. The criminal allegations, as laid out by law enforcement investigators against Wisam Sharieff, were conducted outside AlMaghrib Institute’s educational platform via private communication between the accused adult parties. The alleged minor-aged victim was not a student of AlMaghrib Institute. As such, no law enforcement authorities ever communicated with AlMaghrib Institute prior to filing their criminal complaint against Wisam Sharieff.
2. AlMaghrib Institute continues to enforce its longstanding policy of zero tolerance for instructors having any romantic relationships with their students. Instructors are expected to abide by AlMaghrib Institute’s strict code of conduct in both their public and private lives. As soon as AlMaghrib Institute was notified of a possible violation of its code of conduct by an instructor in his personal life, AlMaghrib Institute conducted its own investigation but did not have access to law enforcement’s investigation. However, AlMaghrib Institute’s own investigation concluded there was sufficient evidence violating AlMaghrib Institute’s code of conduct to terminate the instructor’s employment and immediately publicly disclosed it.
AlMaghrib Institute has catered to the needs of 250,000+ students and will continue to provide a safe-space on its educational platform for all students by enforcing its strict code of conduct policies.

Iran’s Army has announced the deaths of two of its forces in Israel’s attack on a number of military positions across the country.

BREAKING: Leicester Muslim activist Majid Freeman’s appeal case hearing adjourned.
Freeman has been fighting to clear his name after he was freed from prison and granted bail to appeal his conviction related to the 2022 Hindutva-related street violence in 2022.
He was convicted of a Section 4 Public Order offence which occured during the Hindutva-inspired tensions in Leicester.
Freeman expresses his gratitude to all those who have supported him. A new date for his day in court has been provided, Jan 10th 2025.

Hamas has confirmed the killing of leader Yahya Sinwar by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.
But Israeli captives held in Gaza will not return until the war on Gaza stops and Israeli forces withdraw, senior Hamas official Khalil Hayya said.
Hayya described Sinwar as a "fallen martyr" and “steadfast, brave and intrepid."
He added that Sinwar’s “martyrdom” and those of the leaders who preceded him “will only increase the strength and resilience of our movement”.
“The occupation prisoners will not return unless the aggression on Gaza stops, there is a complete withdrawal from [Gaza], and our prisoners are released from the prisons,” Hayya said.
"Hamas will continue until the establishment of the Palestinian state on all Palestinian soil with Jerusalem as its capital.”

He was sitting calmly on an armchair and even managed to throw a stick at the drone in what appears to be a fight to the last breath.
