2001 was a significant year in the history of Ethiopiaโ€™s banking.

This is because ATMs were first introduced in Ethiopia in 2001.

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) introduced local ATM services with a fleet of eight ATMs in Addis Ababa.

In 2005, CBE became authorized to issue Visa-branded cards and facilitate transactions on the global Visa network. While CBE pioneered ATMs in Ethiopia, private banks later became leaders in modernizing banking services.
