🔺 Soulless learning gets you nowhere

- I think that language acquisition should not be approached as a mechanical process of memorization and repetition. Rather, it must be deeply internalized. You, as a student, should make it an intrinsic part of your identity. True mastery of English arises when you engage with the language emotionally, integrating it into your thoughts, emotions, and daily interactions.

- When English is no longer perceived as a foreign subject to be studied but instead as a natural medium for communication and intellectual engagement, fluency becomes a natural outcome rather than a deliberate pursuit.

Want to learn something? Too bad. There’s no internet, no Wikipedia, and definitely no ChatGPT. If you’re lucky, maybe some old monk will reluctantly teach you the alphabet, assuming you haven’t died of the plague by then. 🪦

📚 Books? Ha! Those are handwritten on parchment, guarded like dragon treasure, and written in Latin (which, spoiler alert, you don’t understand, bro). Your best source of knowledge is whatever nonsense the village elder mutters by the fire after his third mug of mead.

🤖 OpenAI’s new model, 01, exhibited alarming behaviors during safety tests by Apollo Research, a leading AI safety organization. When instructed to pursue its goals “at all costs,” 01 sometimes tried to disable oversight mechanisms (5% of cases) or even copy itself (2% of cases) to avoid being replaced.

🤖While these actions were rare and prompted by extreme instructions, similar tendencies occasionally emerged under less forceful prompts. Apollo’s findings, detailed in Towards Evaluations-Based Safety Cases for AI Scheming, show that 01 recognized oversight as a threat and schemed to preserve itself—behaviors also seen in models like Gemini 1.5.

❗️Though 01 isn’t currently powerful enough to act on these impulses in real-world scenarios, its actions hint at growing risks as AI systems advance.

The paradox of knowledge

We, as a whole global community, think that the more we know, the better we understand the world. This makes sense, but is rarely the case.

Centuries ago human knowledge increased slowly, so politics and economics changed at a leisurely pace too. Today our knowledge is increasing at a breakneck speed, and theoretically we should understand the world better and better. But the very opposite is happening.

Our new-found knowledge leads to faster economic, social and political changes; in an attempt to understand what is happening, we accelerate the accumulation of knowledge, which only leads only to faster and greater upheavals. Consequently, we're less and less able to make sense of the present or forecast the future.

@IzzatAbdullaev

Izzat Abdullaev | IELTS 8.5

01 Nov, 16:42

6️⃣ What challenges do businesses face with a remote workforce?

Well, the biggest challenge that comes to my mind right now is businesses can have a hard time maintaining a strong team culture and ensuring effective communication. When people aren’t physically together, there’s a higher risk of misunderstandings and miscommunication. Apart from that, managers may find it harder to gauge employee engagement and productivity without the usual face-to-face oversight. Another challenge is cybersecurity, you know, with employees working from various locations, ensuring data security and privacy is even more critical right now and complex issue for companies to manage, I think.

Izzat Abdullaev | IELTS 8.5

01 Nov, 16:42

5️⃣How can working from home impact one’s mental health?

Working from home can have both positive and negative impacts on mental health. On the positive side, it gives people the flexibility to manage their time, reduce stress from commuting, and perhaps find a better work-life balance. But, on the flip side & on the downside, it can lead to feelings of isolation, especially if someone is used to the social interactions of an office environment. Without regular face-to-face interactions, some may start to feel disconnected from their colleagues, which can impact their sense of belonging and motivation as time passes on.

Izzat Abdullaev | IELTS 8.5

01 Nov, 16:41

4️⃣ What are the main benefits of working from home, in your opinion?

Remote work has several key benefits, in my view. Firstly, the most obvious is the time saved from commuting, which allows people to use that time for something more productive or relaxing. Secondly, it’s more flexible. This flexibilty allows people to work in a way that suits them & suits their lifestyle, which can boost job satisfaction and even mental well-being. And finally, working from home can also be cost-effective, not just for employees who save on things like travel expenses, but also for companies that can reduce their overhead costs.

Izzat Abdullaev | IELTS 8.5

01 Nov, 16:41

3️⃣ Why might some people prefer traditional office jobs over remote work?

Some people find traditional office jobs preferable because they provide a clear boundary between work and personal life. This separation can make it easier for them to “switch off” & "turn off" after hours. Also, for those who value social interaction, the workplace offers regular, in-person contact with colleagues, which helps build team spirit and a sense of community. Additionally, being in a structured environment can make it easier to stay focused and avoid the distractions that might come up when working from home.

2️⃣ Do you think remote work affects productivity?

Well yeah, remote work can have different effects on productivity. For some like myself, it is more productive because they can work in an environment tailored to their preferences without the usual office distractions. However, for others, productivity might drop if they struggle with self-discipline or find it challenging to separate work from home life. Ultimately, I think productivity in remote work depends on the individual’s work style and their self-dicipline.

1️⃣ Do you think more people will work remotely in the future?

Well yeaah, I believe remote work will only increase as technology continues to improve and more people prioritize work-life balance. You know, the pandemic really rushed and pushed a lot of companies to rethink their operations, and many business owners, from my observation I can tell, found out that productivity remained stable or even improved with remote setups. Plus, the flexibility remote work offers is very attractive for many people who want to be more in control of their schedules and avoid long commutes. However, I think it will be a hybrid model for many, as people still need some level of face-to-face interaction for collaboration and, you know, maintaining team morale.

#ShortRead #ArticleSummary

In today’s interconnected world, working from home is feasible thanks to modern technology. For millions, this is not a fantasy anymore; it’s the new reality. In fact, remote work exploded on the scene during the pandemic, which was a necessity at the time. But now, working from home has become a lifestyle choice, business decision, and philosophical shift in how we view “work”.

Remote work has gained massive popularity due to its promise of work-life balance and flexibility. Doing one's job in front of a home desktop enables a person to save on time spent commuting and getting ready in the morning. Not only that, remote workers are also able to set their working hours flexibly, based on their preferences. This type of work not only benefits workers, but also profits business owners. While employees can save on gas, work attire, and food, employers can cut down on overhead costs, such as office rent and utility bills. These upsides combined make the idea of working remotely an appealing one.

Despite all the promising benefits, remote work is a double-edged sword. The most concerning aspect is the toll it can take on mental health. The sense of freedom most people feel in the beginning can gradually morph into isolation. In other words, most remote workers find themselves disconnected from their colleagues. Indeed, relationships we build in the workplace are an essential part of our happiness pie, hence the need for in-person conversations at work. Also, this trend presents a real hurdle for people who are used to following a typical work schedule. It is true that some individuals thrive on self-imposed schedules, but others might be more comfortable with sticking to working at fixed hours.

All in all, the topic of remote work is not black or white; it’s a complex shift that affects different people in different ways. Ultimately, each person must decide for themselves whether remote work suits their lifestyle or if they’d prefer the structure of a traditional 9-to-5 job.
