(June 13, 2025, Bahir Dar): College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bahir Dar University, held today a PhD public defense.

The candidate Desalegn Amare presented his dissertation on "Effect of Integrating Traditional Care with Modern Health Care System on Case Detection, Diagnosis Delay, Cost of Tuberclosis Care and its Acceptability in Northwest Ethiopia".

1ኛ. የትምህርት ደረጃ ሁለተኛ ዲግሪ/ሦስተኛ ዲግሪ (ወይም አቻ) እና ከዚያ በላይ ማዕረግ ያለው/ያላት መምህር/መምህርት፣

6ኛ. ከትምህርት ወይም ምርምር ወይም ሌሎች ጉዳዮች ጋር በተያያዘ መደበኛ የሥራ እረፍት ላይ ያልሆነ/ች እና ለቀጣይ ሦስት ዓመት በኃላፊነት ለማገልገል ፈቃደኛ የሆነ/ች::

College of Medicine and Health Sciences (BDU-CMHS), hosted a public Lecture on "3D Technology for Healthcare in Ethiopia" on January 2, 2025 at the Senate Hall.

The speaker was Prof. Gyeong-Man Kim, a renowned expert in 3D technology in healthcare.

The seminar explored how 3D innovations can enhance healthcare services, education, assisted device production, advanced surgical planning, and rehabilitative patient care in Ethiopia.

Bahir Dar, Ethiopia — November 16, 2024: Prof. Bayile Damtie, former President of Bahir Dar University (BDU) and the current Vice Chancellor of Kepler, delivered an insightful virtual lecture on ‘Organizational Transformation’ to the second cohort of the Leadership Development Program (LDP) fellows at College of Medicine and Health Sciences. 

The session was hosted by Prof. Yeshigeta Gelaw, CED of College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Prof. Bayile shared his extensive experience in higher education leadership with the audience.

The LDP program, now in its second cohort, continues to empower fellows with the tools and insights necessary for tackling leadership challenges.

The college Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Ethiopian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology

Bahir Dar, November 8, 2024 —College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) at Bahir Dar University (BDU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today with the Ethiopian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (ESOT). The MoU aims to enhance collaboration in trauma and injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and community awareness on complications related to traditional bone setting practices.

This agreement formalizes the ongoing partnership between CMHS and ESOT, strengthening their shared commitment to advancing orthopedic and trauma care in Ethiopia. Key areas of collaboration include:

#Joint Educational Programs: CMHS and ESOT will work together to develop and deliver educational programs such as workshops, conferences, and continuing medical education courses, as well as fellowship opportunities in orthopedics and traumatology.

#Research Collaborations: Both institutions will support and encourage research initiatives involving faculty, students, and members, fostering innovation and knowledge sharing in orthopedic and trauma care.

#Clinical Training: CMHS and ESOT will offer enhanced clinical training opportunities for BDU medical students, residents, and fellows specializing in orthopedics and traumatology.

#Community Outreach: The collaboration will extend to outreach programs aimed at improving community health and raising awareness about injury prevention and the risks associated with traditional bone setting practices.

Dr. Melesse Gebeyehu, Corporate Director for Medical Education and Services at CMHS, signed on behalf of the college, while Dr. Ephrem Gebrehana, president, signed on behalf of ESOT.

This MoU marks an important step forward in their efforts to improve orthopedic healthcare services in Ethiopia.

Professor Hearn’s invaluable contributions and dedication to fostering collaboration between Australian and African universities have left a lasting legacy.

The College Hosts External Curricula Review Workshop

Bahir Dar, Ethiopia – November 4, 2024: College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bahir Dar University, hosted an External Curricula Review Workshop.

The workshop brought together academic experts, health professionals, and curriculum specialists to review and provide critical feedback on programs in Emergency and Critical Care Nursing, Clinical Pharmacy, PhD in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

The event opened with welcoming remarks from Dr. Nebiyu Shitaye, Corporate Director for Clinical Services, Academic Quality Assurance and Innovation at the college. Dr. Nebiyu emphasized the workshop’s importance in enhancing the quality of the programs apart from institutional requirements.

He expressed confidence in the programs' success, citing enabling factors at the college, including highly skilled personnel, strong partnerships, and the existence of Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital.

In the morning, the three curricula were presented and reviewed. The MSc in Emergency and Critical Care Nursing was presented by Mr. Solomon Emishaw, and evaluated by Bicks Lyew from University of Gondar and Birhanu Asrat from Saint Paul Millienium Medical college. The MSc in Clinical Pharmacy was presented by Kassahun Bogale and evaluated Alemseged Beyene from Addis Ababa University and Ousman Abubekir from University of Gondar.

The PhD in Nursing was presented by Dr. Worku Animaw and evaluted by Dr. Maleda Tefera from Haromaya University and Dr. Mohammed Hassen from University of Gondar.

The discussions of all the three programs were moderated by Prof. Netsanet Fentahun, Executive Director for Research Affairs at the University.

In the afternoon, Dr. Ashagre Molla presented the curriculum for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, followed by a panel discussion Dr.John Cranmer from Emory University in the United States and moderated by Dr. Worku Animaw.

The audience also actively participated and provided crucial insights to enhance the programs' quality.

The workshop concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Ashagrie Molla, Chief Administrative and Business Development Director at the college who underscored the importance of the programs to produce highly skilled graduates equipped to address the evolving challenges in Ethiopia’s healthcare landscape.

Bahir Dar, November 01, 2024_Dr. Bekalu Wubshet, Deputy Corporate Director for Medical Education at College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bahir Dar University, participated at a high-level institutional meeting in Madrid, Spain, from October 27th to 31st, 2024.

The event was led by the Spanish Cooperation Agency, the Spanish Ministry of Health, and the Italian Cooperation Agency under the Joint European Initiative.

Dr. Bekalu presented our college's background and highlighted key milestones achieved through the Joint European Initiative, a program supporting medical specialization across nine universities, including Bahir Dar University.

The discussions, which also involved the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, were crucial for strengthening our partnerships. As part of the program, participants visited several hospitals in Madrid to exchange insights and best practices.
