THE MASTER BUILDER’S HOUSE is a fine Georgian building situated at the end of the wide village street nearer the river at Buckler’s Hard. This historic 18th-century shipbuilding village has deep roots dating back to the 13th century when it was owned by Cistercian monks. It later became a renowned shipyard, crafting vessels for Nelson’s Navy.

The house belonged to Henry Adams, who was overseer for Wyatt and Company In 1745 when the 24-gun frigate Surprise was launched, the first ship to be built at Buckler’s Hard. Adams became Master Shipwright and died in 1805 at the age of ninety-two

Legendary Rock and Roll Singer Gene Vincent on his Triumph motorcycle! England circa 1969

It should be noted however, that out of all the American artists, Gene Vincent probably had a bigger influence and impact on the late 1960's and 1970's Teddy Boy movement than any other single American Rock 'n' Roller. This was mainly due to the fact that Gene Vincent had been popular amongst the 1960's Rockers and had spent a great deal of time in Britain during the 1960's making many appearances right through until his death in 1971. Gene Vincent remains to this day a cult figure to Rockers and Teddy Boys.

Tooley Street, London (1900)

In 1900, Tooley Street was a bustling thoroughfare in the heart of London’s docklands, lined with warehouses, shops, and taverns. The street was a hub of commercial activity, with horse-drawn carts transporting goods to and from the nearby wharves. Dockworkers, traders, and office clerks moved about their daily routines amid the cacophony of deliveries and street vendors.

PAPER JACK (Alfred Ellis Preece Jr) OF CROYDON.
Born 1876 Holloway, Islington.
Died 1935 Waddon.

A well educated son of a prosperous London business man, he was a surveyor, he helped to map a portion of the Brighton Railways. During the War he was employed by the War office in decoding Secret Service documents. He married Ellen Miriam Brandon in 1917. They both lived together on Brighton Road. The relationship was not meant to be, and the pair divorced in 1924.

After the divorce, Mr Preece sold the home and decided he wanted to lead a different life on the streets. He had just one coat and one pair of trousers to his name, and a very old battered top that was gradually replaced with an assortment of paper until he became fully clothed in paper. He always left his arms bare even in winter and he made footwear from an old car tyre inner tube. You could hear him coming because of the noise he made. No one had any fear of him and treated him like a friend, especially the children who loved him and gathered in groups to listen to his story telling. He would also help them with their homework. One mother used to give him her daily mirrors so he could have clean clothes. Mrs E Jones said β€œAs a child I lived in the Lodge, Church Road, Beddlington. Paper Jack would on occasions be sitting under a tree outside the Lodge. (he never came to the door). My Mother would take out a jug of tea and some food. He spoke in a soft cultured voice.”

One guy on his way to work would offer Jack money, but when he did he would reply β€˜Sir I am far richer than you can ever hope to be.”
β€œI don’t envy anyone in the World”
β€œI’m warm because my heart and lungs work as nature intended them to.”
β€œI’m happy because I believe in god and not in gold, I never get any letters or bills, I never look at a clock, and I sleep when I feel like it, under the stars.

He was cultured, gentle and well mannered with a christ like appearance in a rough sort of way. He never begged, but local people welcomed him with a jug of tea.

On 30th January he was crossing Benson Road one evening which was poorly lit, he was killed by a car, all he had on him was the paper he was wrapped in.

Arthur Ellis Preece visited the coroner and said he believed the dead man was his brother, he had not seen for 15 years.

I admire Paper Jack because he lived life how he wanted to live, he probably felt more free and loved than he did during his lifetime. In a way he had the freedom of Croydon and he was such a well known and popular character, very friendly and very approachable. He decided he would live his life on his terms. He wasn’t controlled by time, he didn’t have to worry about bills, he didn’t have to answer to anyone. He had a massive impact on Croydon and his memory still lives on today. It’s so sad that his life ended the way it did.

Winkle Street, Southampton. 1909
The Platform Tavern on the right. The Platform Tavern is situated with its front opening onto Town Quay and its rear onto Winkle Street. The building probably dates from the early Victorian period, becoming a public house in the in the 1860s; it is first referred to in a street directory of 1869. However, there was a beer retailer, Robert Mabb, listed in Winkle Street in the 1865 directory and although the Platform Tavern is not mentioned, it is highly likely to be the beer house referred to.
Winkle Street still exists as does the Platform.

The final "narrowing" of the Broad Gauge on May21st/22nd, 1892, is a legendary piece of logistical engineering. 4.700 men, pulled in from Plymouth, Hereford, Neath, Newport, Reading, Taunton and Wolverhampton changed the outstanding Broad Gauge track on a mileage of 423 miles and 32 chains.

The work had been going on across the system since the early 1870's - but now they had to make one last push to get the job done.

Now some might say that the job was pretty simple. On baulk road track, it was simply a job of slewing one transom in by a couple of feet, and on cross sleepered track, the new chairs had already been installed, so all that needed doing was lifting the rail across. But here is a pic showing just how involved the job could be.

Shopping in Above Bar Street, Southampton in the 1920s before the East and West walls were demolished.
By 1899, the increase in road traffic and the introduction of trams led to proposals for the Bargate's demolition. It was reprieved at a subsequent council meeting but the issue arose again in 1914 and 1923. The Bargate was however eventually separated from the adjoining town walls in the 1930s using a scheme previously suggested in 1900.The first separation was made on the east side in 1932 with the second on the west carried out in 1937.

Kings Cross, London, on July 20, 1899, was a bustling, rapidly industrializing area, known primarily for its iconic railway station, which had been a central transport hub since its opening in 1852. By the turn of the century, Kings Cross was already a critical point in London's rail network, with trains connecting the city to the north of England, Scotland, and beyond. The station itself, designed by the architect Lewis Cubitt, was a grand structure of Victorian engineering, featuring a vast iron and glass roof. Surrounding the station, the area was a mix of industrial warehouses, residential buildings, and businesses catering to the busy transport links. The air would have been filled with the sounds of steam engines, the bustle of commuters, and the general energy of a Victorian-era city at the height of its global influence.

At the time, Kings Cross was part of the ongoing transformation of London during the late 19th century, a period marked by rapid urban expansion and industrialization. The neighborhood itself was often associated with working-class residents, with a mixture of low-cost housing, pubs, and shops that served the large number of people living in or passing through the area. However, the city was also beginning to undergo significant social changes, as wealthier individuals moved further away from the industrial heart of London, into areas like the West End or the suburbs, leaving places like Kings Cross to become more industrial and commercial. The close proximity of the station made it a lively, vibrant area, but it was also a place that saw its fair share of poverty, squalor, and overcrowding, particularly in the narrow alleyways and back streets.

Kings Cross in 1899 was not yet the cultural or commercial center that it would later become, but it was undeniably a focal point in the expanding railway network that would eventually connect London to the rest of the country, shaping the city's growth and development throughout the 20th century. By this point, the station was already integral to the daily rhythms of life in London, serving thousands of passengers who were either coming to or leaving the city. The surrounding area had yet to undergo the dramatic urban regeneration that would reshape it in the decades to come. It would take another century before Kings Cross would emerge as a symbol of modern Londonβ€”an area of cultural vibrancy, office spaces, and new residential developments. The snapshot of Kings Cross in 1899 captures a moment in time before this dramatic transformation, when it was still defined by its industrial past and its role as a key entry point into the capital.
