When the idea of making du’ā appears in your mind, do not take it for granted. Make the du’ā.

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

“If Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) did not want to accept your du’ā, He would not have guided you to make it (in the first place)”

It is not just about leaving the sin, but hating it. Because if you leave a sin, but still long to commit it, you’ll be stuck in an endless loop of leaving and revisiting.

But when you hate the sin, you destroy the loop. And even the thought of revisiting it will have you repenting to Allāh سبحانه وتعالى.

Abu ad-Darda said:

"If one of your brothers changes or commits a sin, neither leave nor forsake him. Rather preach to him in the most beautiful way and have patience with him. For indeed, at times a brother can be correct and at times he can slip."

[Hilyat al-Awliyah 4/232]

There was a man who used to enter upon 'Umar bin al-Khattāb رضي الله عنه and 'Umar did not see him and inquired about him and it was said to him that his condition changed (weakened in imān).

So, 'Umar wrote to him admonishing him and when his letter reached him he cried and repented with the best of repentance.

'Umar said: "This is what you should do if you see a brother of yours fall into error; direct him and make du'à that Allāh pardons him and do not aid the Shaytān against him."

Everyone should go back to this story once in a while. You are not safe from going down the same path as your brother, so thank Allāh abundantly and remember to attribute all your achievements and success to the One who granted you it in the first place.

May Allāh never deprive us of His rahmah, may He forgive us for our ungratefulness and shortcomings. Wallahu musta’an.

Sunnah prayer of Fajr

Imām Ibn al-Qayyīm رحمه الله said:

“It was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ when travelling to pray only the obligatory prayers, and it was not narrated that he used to pray the regular Sunnah prayers either before or after the fard prayers, apart from Witr and the Sunnah of Fajr, which he never omitted whether he was travelling or not.”

[Zaad al-Ma’aad, 1/473]

And he said:

“His (the Prophet ﷺ) adherence to praying the Sunnah of Fajr was stronger than with all other naafil prayers, so he did not omit it or Witr whether he was travelling or not. When he was travelling he would still pray the Sunnah of Fajr and Witr and adhere to that more than all other naafil prayers. It is not narrated that he prayed any other regular Sunnah prayer when he was travelling.”

“Early in this century, a group of true Muwahidīn [descendants of a reviver and an ‘ālim of our time], they did not know what airplanes were. These Muwahidīn did not really know anything about them. Their people began to discourage them and tell them that the British have airplanes that fly over, drop bombs and kill everyone. An innocent Bedouin with a simple rifle in his hand, he said: those things you say they fly over, are they flying over Allāh or under Allāh?

The answer from the one who was discouraging him was: well, of course they are under Allāh. He said: then how can we fear that which is below Allāh, when we are relying on One who is above them?

Reading the Qur'an will not become your daily concern until you begin to treat it as an obligatory prayer. You will be anxious when you miss it, you will be preparing for it to start, and you will not rest until you have read it. If you do this and persist in it, then you have followed the example of your predecessors and followed the path of perseverance.

Do not neglect your share from the Quran. Protect it the same way you protect your prayers. Allahu musta’an.

When a person is left alone with his thoughts for too long, the consequences can become fatal. One has to constantly fill his time with different ‘ibadaat, hobbies, activities, interactions etc. to avoid thinking too much. Because if you think too much, you are eventually going to go crazy. Your mind will take you places it shouldn’t go, you will ponder upon unnecessary things, start asking questions one shouldn’t ask. Your focus will shift from the primary goal to other meaningless matters, often related to the dunya and such.

When you are left with your thoughts for too long, you will see that it becomes harder to follow the orders from your Rabb. It becomes harder to follow the path of the Prophet ﷺ and the righteous believers; سمعنا وأطعنا - we hear, and we obey. Mainly because you stop just hearing and obeying, you start asking questions of your own, you start finding answers of your own, your own self which is created, with no power, no strength, no knowledge whatsoever.

But one should also strive to find a balance between thinking, pondering and being busy with other acts. A person is in need of pondering and thinking, let’s take the Qur’an as an example. One should ponder upon the word of Allāh ‘azza wa jall, how else will you take benefit from it? Allāh has blessed you with intellect, so take use of it and apply what you learn in your life, but there is a limit to this thinking - or else it will turn into unnecessary questioning, and the snowball will continue to roll and eventually…wal ‘iyadhu billah.

Virtues of the day of ‘Arafah

🖋️Abdullāh Ibn Mubārak رحمه الله said:

"I entered upon Sufyān al-Thawrī on the evening of 'Arafah whilst he was kneeling on his knees and his eyes shedding tears, so he turned towards me and I said to him:

'Do you know who the loser is today?'

He replied: 'The one who thinks Allāh shall not forgive him!'"

[لطائف المعارف ابن الجوزى ص ٣١٠]

🖋️Awza’ee رحمه الله said,

“I realized that people were reserving things (their duas, needs, wishes) for the day of Arafah to ask Allāh for them.

And some of them used to say:

“For fifty years I have been supplicating on the day of Arafah and the year does not go by except that I see the answer of my dua come to pass as the morning light (as clear as day).”

[Lataif al Ma’arif pg. 494 | Ibn Rajab al Hanbali رحمه الله]
