How to write personal statement

1. Write everything important happened in your life to google doc or to notebook 📓 (It's also called reflection)

2. Don't read any sample essays. Choose one topic or one story that changed your life. If you want, you can also write several important things happened in your life. Just keep writing untill you write all things you wanna say.

3. Don't look at Common app essay prompts because they aren't important. Write in a way you speak. Don't worry about grammar or anything coz it's your first draft. It is okay even it doesn't look like a personal statement (PS).

4. Now you are done with first draft, so it's time to check grammar and rewrite the essay. Remove unnecessary, cliche and repetitive sentences.

5. Now focus on the beginning and ending because these parts should be unique, interesting and memorable. Otherwise, Admission officers will forget what your essay was about which can lead to rejection.

6. Get feedback from trustworthy and experienced people to improve the weak areas which you didn't notice.

7. Read aloud and make the final edits. Keep in mind it's just one part of your application. I mean AOs will review your application holistically so don't overthink too much. Just be yourself because your essay should tell who you are.

Share this post with others and start writing your PS right now!

Harvard
Cornell
MIT
Vanderbilt
University of Pensilvania...

These are very selective schools yet some Uzbekistani students have already got into in Early Decision, and even more results are yet to come.

Of course, it doesn't mean you have to apply to such selective schools but if you think you have a chance to get accepted, you should do your best and if it is meant to happen, your university's name will be written next to these schools.

American idol

18 Dec, 15:01

Part 2

7) Q: How do college admissions officers evaluate my essay?

A: Each school has its own criteria and different readers will prefer different elements. Some universities most look to the essay to assess a student's writing ability while others are less interested in writing ability and more interested in a student's story.

8) Q: So which is more important: your story or your writing skill?
A: Both are important. A good story, well told. That's your goal.

9) Q: How do I structure my essay?
A: You can write in Narrative Structure and Montage Structure. Narrative structure is writing like one story. If you want to write about 3-4 different things, you can use Montage structure.

10) Q: How much do essays matter?
A: It depends on the college, but generally between 10%-30%. Essays tend to matter more for small schools, or schools who look at applications holistically.

11) Q: If my grades are bad, can I get into Harvard with a great essay?
A: Nope. Schools look at your GPA, course rigor and test scores more than anything. When you're being compared to other students with similar GPA/SAT scores, that's when the essays can make or break your chances. Harvard is great, but there are a lot of other awesome schools too. For a list of Colleges That Change Lives, Google "Colleges That Change Lives."

So, we will learn how to write college essays based on the advice of admissions experts.

Here are answers to most frequently asked questions:

1) Q: How do I begin to write my essay?
A: If you’re reading this, you’ve already begun. In this guide you’ll find some ideas on how to brainstorm and structure your essay.

2) Q: How long should my essay be?
A: It depends. Your main Common App essay can be up to 650 words, while the essays for the University of California (UC) schools are around 350 words each, and your supplemental essays will vary.

3) Q: How many essays will I need to write?
A: Around 15 is average. You'll likely write a main personal statement for your Common App, perhaps some separate essays if you're applying to public schools (the UCs require four, for example), plus you'll write supplements for most selective schools, which number anywhere from 6-20, depending on the number of schools you apply to.

4) Q: What should my essay be about?
A: In a word, you. You should write about your experiences or your passions or something that shaped you. You should show your personality and character by telling a story about your life and experiences.

5) Q: What are college admissions officers looking for?
A: They're looking for the answers to these three questions:

Who is this person?

Will this person contribute something of value to our campus?

Can this person write?

6) Q: When should I start writing my essay?
A: Today. Right now.

Here are some questions

1. When I will receive answer for Early Decision and Regular decision

It depends on the university you applied but usually you will get Early Decision answers in December and the one for Regular decision in the end of March.

2. Do you offer consultations?

Yes, but it's not free because my time is limited. In consultation, we can discuss any part of your application and give feedback to your essays. If you are interested, DM me at @ismat7

3. Can you help me apply to Korea and Europe in addition to the USA

I am mainly focused on the USA, but I also know how to apply to
Türkiye burslari, Hungarian stipendium and some other scholarships.

4. When admission officers will review our application

Your application will be ready to review when your teacher sent the recommendation letters & transcripts and when you submit IELTS, financial and the other required documents.

5. Are you still at Satashkent

No, I left that place only after 2 weeks due to some personal reasons, not because of the quality of the lessons or smth like that

6. Is Regular decision bad?

Contrary to common belief, your chance of getting accepted is almost same in both ED and Regular decisions. Though, one disadvantage is some scholarships may have finished, but if you apply on time, you can still get the scholarship you need.

So many people are applying to such universities but it doesn't mean you should apply as well just because other people are applying. More people=more difficult to get accepted.

That being said, if you believe you can get in and the university fits you well, write the essays and submit your application.

Note: You can find guidance to supplemental essays of the other top universities on this website.

I definitely agree that reading someone's essays and supplementals don't really help.

What you should do instead?

1) Focus on yourself, and write essays based on your life, TRUE stories, REAL you.

2) Get Feedback From Confidential people (the ones you trust)

3) Research universities to have enough information to write supplementals

4) Ask any questions from Google/Chatgpt

5) Just write what you want to write. That's it.

American idol

24 Oct, 18:48

A common trend that I noticed is people wanting to read others’ common app essays, activities and honors thinking that it will help them.

Ask yourself a simple question: how?

How will that benefit you? Everyone’s application is unique, and nobody knows how they got into a particular university.

Do you think reading someone’s application will increase your chances? It’s like watching a documentary about a millionaire and thinking your chances of becoming a millionaire will increase out of nowhere.

You already know that the bar for top 20 universities is high, so why bother going through other peoples’ applications? If you’re just interested in how to phrase your activity/honor section, watching (maximum) 2-3 YouTube videos should be more than enough. The more applications you read, the more you will lose your own personal voice in your own app. Go through 2-3 videos on YouTube to familiarize yourself with how to format the application, and that’s it, don’t go beyond that. If an essay worked for someone, it doesn’t mean that it will work for you. Universities don’t have a specific template that an application or essay should fit for them to accept it.

Tldr: stop wasting your time reading other peoples’ applications and go work on yourself. Good luck with ED!

American idol

24 Oct, 04:53

Look at the 25th Percentile and if your score is lower than that, you shouldn't submit your SAT score.

For example, SAT 25th
percentile in Princeton university is 1460, and if your score is 1390, you should not submit your SAT
.
