Ibn al-Jawzi (rahimahullah):
Beware of asking something without asking for it to be attained in khair (goodness), for perhaps attaining a worldly matter may be a cause of your destruction.

Prophet Muḥammad (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa salam) said:
Do not supplicate for yourself anything but good (Khayr) for indeed the angels say ‘Āmeen’ to whatever you say (in Duʿā).

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (rahimahullah) said,
“I used to memorize the Quran;
then when I started to memorize the ahadith, I became busy,
so I asked (myself): "When will I ever finish memorizing the Quran?"
I asked Allah to bless me to memorize it but I didn't say "while in a state of well being (‘aafiyah)”
I didn't memorize it except while (I was) in prison and in shackles.
So if you ask Allah for any need, say: "while in a state of ‘aafiyah (well-being).”
