The most useful function you could have when doing a project where you do a lot of bit manipulations.

It lets you parse out values from bitpacked integers.

You provide the starting bit position of the value and its width, and the function gives you back the value.

I want to share a story about my friend, Kalkidan—a talented Python developer and a key contributor to the Ethiopian dev community. He’s known for building amazing Telegram bots that many of us use and benefit from. But what’s truly inspiring? He’s done all of this using just his phone.

Despite his passion and dedication, not having a laptop makes it harder for him to grow and achieve more. That’s why I’ve decided to start a fundraising campaign to help him buy a laptop.

This is the biggest thing I want to achieve this year, and with your help, we can make it happen! Every contribution counts, no matter how small. Let's give Kalkidan (a.k.a kkyk )the tools he needs to keep growing and supporting our community.

There is no such thing as a natural resource in the absolute sense; we choose what to consider valuable and make it a resource. For every seemingly unique and special natural resource, we have developed alternatives, and we will continue to do so for any other resource deemed uniquely valuable.

Everything we use has existed in some form before we utilized it. In that sense, it is natural. However, it does not become a resource until we designate it as one.

The only truly unique and important resource is human potential.

Terrestrial transportation peaked with trains.

If you changed all the car roads in the world to train tracks, the world would be much more efficient. Cars should have been only used for "off road" purposes because once you start needing to build roads for them, they are just trains with extra steps.

When you end the day feeling like there’s vastly more you ought to have done, you’re telling your nervous system it can’t take a break; and you’re reinforcing an idea of your work as an oppressive and insatiable force. And all of that invites a counter-reaction of procrastination: due to fear, or defiance, or a mixture of both, it gets harder and harder to make yourself work.

The other day, I needed to print some documents and found myself searching for a copy shop. Like many, I ran into the usual hassle of transferring files—some use USB drives, others rely on messaging apps like Telegram.

I thought, there has to be a simpler way.

At the time, I was learning Laravel, so I decided to use it as an opportunity to put my skills to the test. The result is https://fizza.mesnoy.com — a tool designed to make file sharing quick and easy. I used Laravel for the backend and Elm to build the file uploader.

It’s still in the testing phase, and I’d love to get your feedback on how it works and how it could be improved.

Why do cinemas only show new releases, they should show old movies that are considered classics.

It also makes sense on the business side because you are not sure a newly released movie would be good and get people to come to your cinema but if you show an old classic you could be sure that people will come.

It is now much easier to run pglite-fusion.

Run a PostgreSQL database that has pglite-fusion already installed.

docker run --network=host frectonz/pglite-fusion

Connect to the PostgreSQL database using psql.

psql postgresql://postgres@localhost:5432/

pglite-fusion

I made a postgres extension that allows you to define SQLite columns on a PostgreSQL table. This means every row in your table can have an embedded SQLite DB.

Notice that the database column has the type SQLITE in the screenshot.

The functions execute_sqlite, empty_sqlite, get_sqlite_text, query_sqlite are all provided from the pglite_fusion extension.

Just finished an initial implementation of an idea I had for a postgres extension.

I think it solves multi tenancy for most use cases.

Reqiq did an analysis of different US presidents effects on Ethiopia

People often think this is a cool take but it's not

"Being the president is being, mayor of America and dictator of the world." - Peter Thiel

[i asked chatgpt to fix up my rambling]

The President of the United States often has more flexibility in influencing foreign countries than in exercising power domestically. This is because there are many checks and balances within the U.S. government—such as the role of Congress, the Senate, and the judiciary—that limit the president's authority on internal matters. However, when it comes to foreign policy, there are fewer constraints, allowing the president to pursue various diplomatic and economic strategies with limited oversight. This flexibility sometimes enables the president to pressure other countries into accepting terms that may seem aggressive.

Obama's tenure is a good example of this almost everything he wanted to domestically was blocked by this internal checks.

Although I initially developed SQL Studio as a local tool, I’ve come to realize that it’s actually more useful in deployment environments. I often find myself manually logging into deployed databases via psql when debugging errors or checking data availability. To streamline this process, I decided to pair each database deployment with a corresponding deployment of SQL Studio. This allows me to manage databases more effectively in live environments.

The picture shows how i do this in nomad.

Frectonz

Victor1890 implemented auto suggestions for SQL Studio.

SQL Studio can now auto suggest table and column names when you write a custom query. This works across all the supported DB drivers. It will be available in the next release 0.1.31.

Just saw a podcast with the founder, here are some paraphrased quotes.

- I saw simplicity in lisp, you can do a lot with very few building blocks.

- Can application software be like system software that's kind of a rule we have.

- Can a technology allow you to go down the stack easily.
