Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, China, and Egypt follow Ethiopia as the countries with the highest rate of retractions, according to the study, which was conducted by Achal Agrawal, a data scientist based in Chhattisgarh, India. Agrawal founded India Research Watchdog, a site that keeps tabs on scientific research conducted in India.
While some studies could have been retracted because of honest errors, the study suggests that “a good proportion” of retractions are due to some sort of misconduct.
Countries that had high retraction rates in the analysis period typically saw a sharp rise in their total publication output in the 5 years through 2023, the study found. Such a rise in output by a country without concurrent development in its research infrastructure is usually a sign of a large number of bogus studies that eventually lead to more retractions, the paper suggests.
“This calls into question the current incentive system which promotes quantity over quality,” the paper says.

The Inner Fight
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr.Y, an ambitious entrepreneur eager to transform his ideas into reality. Our conversation was electric, filled with dreams and possibilities.
But as the discussion deepened, Mr.Y leaned in and asked:
"How do you keep going when all hope feels lost?"
"What do you do when revenue flows but profits don’t—or worse, when debt looms?"
"How do you handle pouring your heart and soul into something that doesn’t bear fruit—and then decide to quit?"
These questions hit hard. I paused, smiled, and replied:
“Fun fact, Mr.Y—I quit last week. Truth is, I’ve quit countless times. There are days I sit, staring at the ceiling, asking myself, Why endure this? Why suffer? Why not just get a job and leave this madness behind?
But every time, Mr.Y wakes up inside me. He shakes off the doubts and whispers, ‘One more day. Let’s try again.’
That’s the secret. The struggle, the setbacks, the sleepless nights—they’re not signs of failure; they’re the fires that forge character. Those tough days? They don’t break you—they shape you into someone who’s stronger, smarter, and better prepared for tomorrow.”
I looked Mr.Y in the eye and said:
“Keep going, no matter what. It’s tough, yes. But if you’re consistent, if you push forward despite the odds, you’ll become the person who turns dreams into reality.
Tomorrow might not be easier, but it will be worth it. So, don’t quit, Mr.Y. Because the best is yet to come.” don't pause the strike.

There are tons of pre-built AI models being used for NLP (to help computers understand human language) in English. Billions of dollars have been spent on these models, and they have access to massive amounts of data—something we couldn’t gather for our local languages even in 10 or 20 years.
So why do we hustle to teach computers our local language? Why not just teach everyone in the country English instead and make them communicate directly with computers😁 If the government invests enough money and resources, this can definitely be done in about two years.

OpenAl's new model, 01, exhibited alarming behaviors during safety tests by Apollo Research, a leading Al safety organization.
When instructed to pursue its goals "at all costs," 01 sometimes tried to disable oversight mechanisms (5% of cases) or even copy itself (2% of cases) to avoid being replaced.
While these actions were rare and prompted by extreme instructions, similar tendencies occasionally emerged under less forceful prompts.
Apollo's findings, detailed in Towards Evaluations-Based Safety Cases for Al Scheming, show that o1 recognized oversight as a threat and schemed to preserve itself- behaviors also seen in models like Gemini 1.5.
Though 01 isn't currently powerful enough to act on these impulses in real-world scenarios, its actions hint at growing risks as Al systems advance.

The National Bank of Ethiopia has instructed all financial institutions that a national ID (Fayda) card will be mandatory to open bank accounts nationwide.
The decision, outlined in a Nov 26 letter, will be rolled out in phases - starting Jan 2025 in Addis, then expanding across the country by 2026. Existing accounts must also comply by end-2026. Banks must strictly adhere to the new timeline and requirements.

Whenever you start learning something new or choose a path to dive into, you usually do some research, right? These days, people often ask ChatGPT for help to get started. However, GPT models can’t really give you that human touch in their responses(not good usecase for chatGPT).
I think the best way to do research is to search your topic on Reddit! There are tons of resources and opinions from experienced Reddit nerds. After that, check out Medium posts related to your topic to build on the Reddit responses or fill in the gaps if you didn’t find relevant info on Reddit.

Dr. Yabebal Fantaye is a distinguished Ethiopian astrophysicist and researcher at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in South Africa. He holds a PhD in Cosmology from the School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Italy and has conducted significant research on the statistical properties of the Universe, particularly through the analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data.
Yabebal is also known for his outreach initiative, Astrobus Ethiopia , which aims to promote scientific thinking and curiosity among young people by combining science, art, and innovation.
In recognition of his contributions to science and education, Yabebal was named one of the 50 most influential Africans of 2018 . He is passionate about empowering the next generation of scientists in Africa and believes that studying science is crucial for solving real-world problems.

On Tuesday, two AI startups tried convincing the world their AI chatbots were good enough to be an accurate, real-time source of information during a high-stakes presidential election: xAI and Perplexity.
Elon Musk’s Grok failed almost instantly, offering wrong answers about races’ outcomes before the polls had even closed.
On the other hand, Perplexity offered helpful, real-time election insights and maps throughout the night, linking to reliable resources and offering historical context where appropriate.

🎙 Techet Podcast Season 3 Premiere with Temkin Mengistu 🎙
We’re kicking off the new season on November 7, 2024, Thursday, with Chapi Dev talks , senior developer and formerly worked at Infonas, a provider of cloud and telecom solutions. Temkin holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Adama Science and Technology University. He’s an expert in Python and AWS serverless technologies and has developed API services using Lambda, FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, and MySQL. With experience in backend frameworks like Django and Flask, he’s skilled in serverless frameworks, Stripe, and database design.
In this episode, hosted by Duresa, we’ll hear about Temkin's journey, remote work experience, and approach to quality and communication in projects. A solid start to Season 3!

🌍 What’s New in Ethiopia’s E-Commerce Scene?
Exciting news! Alibaba Group is stepping into the Ethiopian market, integrating AliExpress as a mini-app with Telebirr, which means locals will soon be able to order products directly from China with greater ease.
Although it’s not fully operational yet local currency integration and other features are still being rolled out these updates are expected in the coming months. Once live, this integration could reshape the e-commerce landscape by simplifying cross-border shopping for Ethiopian consumers!
However, this shift comes with mixed perspectives:
🌟 On the plus side, it’s a big opportunity for consumers and resellers to access new products.
🤔 On the other hand, it doesn’t directly support Ethiopian exporters or small manufacturers who could benefit from similar international exposure.
