Interactive tools are an important supplement in the fight against the spread of mis/disinformation.

The U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia funded the translation of the free and web-based game, Cat Park into Amharic. Cat Park is designed to educate players about the harms caused by of mis-/disinformation.
Available in eleven languages, including in Amharic, the game will improve player’s ability to spot disinformation and increase confidence to safely navigate the online information space.

In her opening remarks, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Naomi Fellows encouraged participants to ask questions and understand the important steps in their pursuit for studying in the U.S. Participants gained learned about the U.S. college application process, including tips on crafting personal statements and finding scholarships. The Ethiopian English Language Professionals’ Association (EELPA), in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy, RELO and Mekele University (MU), officially launched its Tigrai Chapter on November 23, 2024.

During the launching program, keynote speech made by Naomi Fellows, Acting Deputy Chief
of Mission at the U.S. Embassy, Addis Ababa. H.E emphasized the vital role of professional development in enhancing educational outcomes and societal progress, commending EELPA and MU for their collaboration in launching the chapter.

Dr. Abdulkadir, V/P/A/A at MU, officially opened the workshop, emphasizing the global importance of English as one of the most widely spoken languages.

Dr. Gena Rhodes, RELO Officer, highlighted the advantages of collaborating with EELPA for teachers in the Tigrai region. She emphasized that educators could benefit from a wide range of online resources provided by the American government which include innovative teaching materials and professional development tools.

The Ethiopian Institute of Peace, in partnership with the Life and Peace Institute and Mekelle University, is implementing a project called Peaceful University Communities (PUC) to promote a culture of peace and dialogue in the university and surrounding communities.

As part of this initiative, EIP has successfully completed multiple capacity-building training sessions. This round of training included peer mediation, project leadership and management, and halfway moderators training for Mekelle university Student Peace forum, and Sustained dialogue Moderators at Mekelle University's Mekelle American Corner. The program was opened by Birhan Habtie, Dean of the College of Law and Governance, and facilitated by Kassahun Abdeta, Program Manager at EIP.

On Sunday, November 3, 2024, Henok World Taekwondo hosted a special class for our dedicated taekwondo students at the Mekelle America Corner. Following the class, the students had the opportunity to tour the Science Museum located within the same venue, enriching their experience with both physical training and educational exploration. It was a day filled with learning and growth, combining the disciplines of martial arts and science.

During the event, MAC Coordinators and Mr. Lealem Techane, Professional Volunteer at MAC, after his testimonial about OPEN program, well articulated about the basic and essential resources, especially related to English Language (MOOCs, OPEN program..), that Mekelle American Corner has.  Mr. Lealem added the how they should connect, learn and innovative coming to the corner that will eventually help them to attain professionalism at their Language Centre.

Mekelle Private Language Centers Association have held its commencement meeting at MAC.
The Association that is legally registered by Regional Government is established to contribute for the professional development of English Language in the language centers in Tigray and beyond, and to ensure the rights and privileges of these languages centers. They also said they wanted to create strong partnerships with potential partners for PD.
During the commencing workshops, the President, Vice President and PR of the Association have said that they will be committed to make the association stronger so it will be platform and institutional bond to connect all centers together for unified purposes and to succeed professionalism in the language centers.
The participants, on their part, reaffirm thay they will be committed in strength their partnership with other partners through the association engagements. They also reiterate they demand support and encouragement from the local and international partners.

As part of our outreach program for the English Conversation Club at MAC, we invited Unique Language Centre to visit Mekelle American Corner and explore the resources and free opportunities there.
During the visit, brief presentation and elaborations about MAC and the English language program that is being provided at MAC was presented by the MAC coordinator and Mr. Lealem Techane, our professional volunteer.
After visiting the Science Museum of MU, the students have also staged their astonishing performance, and forwarded their general good impression about MAC and the resources and services it provides to the community.
Finally, They have accentuated to remain active visitors and program participants at MAC.

Hosted by The Africa I Know (TAIK) in collaboration with Mekelle University and American Spaces, the camp brought together some of the brightest, most passionate students from across the region—many of whom have shown remarkable resilience through the hardships of the Tigray War.
