CT abdomen (anatomy and reference values):
* Imaging from diaphragm to symphysis pubis.
* Usually performed 60 seconds after pump-injection of iodinated contrast into a peripheral vein.
* Normal reference values for adults:
- Liver span: < 15 cm.
- Spleen span: < 12 cm.
- Right dome of diaphragm is usually higher than left): by a rib intercostal space < 3 cm.
- Cardiothoracic ratio): <0.55.
- Esophagus wall: < 3 mm (with distended lumen).
- Gallbladder wall: < 3 mm (well-distended).
- Small bowel: lumen: < 3 cm, wall: < 3 mm.
- Colon: calibre < 5 cm, wall: < 3 mm.
- Appendix: < 6 mm caliber, < 3 mm wall thickness.
- Rectum: wall thickness < 5 mm.
- CBD: < 6 mm and add 1 mm for each decade over age of 60 years.
- Post cholecystectomy CBD: up to 10 mm.
- Pancreatic duct: head: 3.5 mm, body: 2.5 mm, tail: 1.5 mm.
- Aorta: < 3 cm diameter.
- Pulmonary artery: < 28 mm diameter.
- IVC: < 3 cm diameter.
- Portal vein: < 13 mm diameter.
- Splenic vein: < 10 mm diameter.
- Kidneys: 8-10 cm x 4-6 cm.
- Adrenal gland: <1 cm thick, 4-6 cm length.
- Ureter: 30-35 cm long, 3-6 mm diameter
- UB wall: < 3 mm (well-distended state).
- Prostate volume: < 25 cc.
