TOPIC

Some people think that it is fine for professional sportsmen and sportswomen to misbehave on or off the field, as long as they are playing well.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

ESSAY

In the world of professional sport, what matters is an athlete’s performance and achievements, rather than their attitude or behaviour – at least, this is what some people tend to believe. Although I understand that, at the end of the day, even the greatest athletes are ordinary humans, with their own faults and imperfections, I still think that a true professional should place equal, if not greater, importance on how they behave to set a proper example for both their peers and their followers.

Being a prominent athlete does not only constitute great talent or outstanding performance; rather, it encompasses a much wider variety of personal and professional qualities, with sportsmanship being arguably the most important one of those. It is crucial for athletes at all levels – not just professionals – to treat each other with the same amount of respect and understanding as they would normally expect to be treated back. Granted, it might be difficult to maintain the clarity of mind and to remain tactful in the heat of the game, but being able to do so is what separates true professionals from impudent wannabes. N’golo Kanté, a living legend of the French football, embodies this vision. The trophies that he has won make him no different from other prominent French footballers, but his modest and down-to-earth personality has brought him love and recognition from every corner of the globe – something that no performance indicator can bring a fraction of.

It is also expected from professional athletes to watch their words and actions off the field. True, all athletes deserve to have a life outside sport – just as any other working person deserves to have a life outside their work. That being the case, professional athletes still need to take into account the need to maintain the reputation in the eyes of their followers as they have the power to influence opinions and set trends, and this principle also applies to all the other celebrities. Whether it is an athlete, a pop star, or a politician, every celebrity should act as a proper role model for others to follow and, therefore, not over-indulge in activities that might be deemed inappropriate. From unhealthy lifestyle or substance abuse to bullying and racism, a celebrity of any kind has the responsibility to lead others to a better life by their own example. If they allow themselves to misbehave, this task will hardly be fulfilled.

In conclusion, on the one hand, it might be wrong to impose strict limitations onto professional athletes and strip them of who they are deep inside – simple human beings. However, at such a high level of their career and with all the power that they have over the minds of their followers, I would still argue that any instance of misbehaviour, whether on or off the playing field, is unacceptable.

To all English learners – specifically to those who want to improve their writing skills, I have a great advice on how to use AI tools like ChatGPT.

You just need to 🔤🔤🔤 🔤🔤🔤 🔤🔤.

Unless you can write essays of similar or better quality than those AI tools can, there is not much you can actually learn from AI-generated essays.

Given that the overwhelming majority of language learning are just too lazy to use AI tools in the correct way, the best choice is not using them altogether.

You can thank me later.

In all four years of my teaching career, no student of mine has ever misspelled the word 'beaches' in the Listening section. Students laughed, shared giggling looks with each other, but didn't actually write the other word, even as a joke.

That has been this way for years and close to a thousand of students. Until today.

Did you know that the time that you need to learn new words can be reduced in half or even more? You just need to understand how word formation works in English.

But my students are too lazy for this😫

To be fair, I really miss my first two years at uni. The subjects we were taught were really interesting – mostly because of the great teachers we had.

My all-time favourite, and that of many of my groupmates, is Abdullaeva Feruza. She teaches Calculus and other related subjects.

If anyone studying at TUIT happens to meet her, pass my greetings😁

This approach to assessment means two things.

First, the assessment process is much fairer. Candidates getting 7888 and 7788 are assessed differently, with the former still having a chance of being awarded a higher score.

Second, you can simply toss the criteria scores between the tasks, keeping in mind that 1 band in Task 2 is equal to 2 bands in Task 1. For example:

T1: 7777 and T2: 9999

is equal to

T1: 8888 and T2: 9988

The two bands that we took from Task 2 were converted into 4 bands in Task 1.

14 Oct, 09:23

However, this is TOTALLY WRONG

The calculation process happens in a single stage, and rather then using the scores for the two tasks, they use the scores for the eight criteria. Therefore, the formula looks like this:

Overall = [ SUM(Task 1 Criteria) + 2 * SUM(Task 2 Criteria) ] / 12,

where 12 comes from multiplying 3 from the previous formula by 4 (the number of assessment criteria).

If we now use this formula to calculate the overall score from the example given earlier, we will get 8.5!

How your overall writing score is calculated

One thing that is certainly true for the assessment of examiner-rated sections (i.e., Writing and Speaking) is that the overall score is rounded down. So, if, for example, you get 9888 across the Speaking Assessment Criteria, your overall will be an 8.0, not 8.5.

One more correct thing about the Writing section specifically is that Task 2 weighs twice as much as Task 1, so it has a greater impact on the overall score.

However, a common misconception about calculating the overall score for the writing section that we've all been led to believe is that this process happens in two stages. That would mean that during calculation, they would first work out the score for the tasks (Task 1 and Task 2) and then would use these values to calculate the overall score.

Here is an example:

T1: 7888 -> 7.5
T2: 8999 -> 8.5

Putting these values in the formula

Overall = [ T1 + 2 * T2 ] / 3,

we will get 8.0.

Report:

The pie charts provide a breakdown of the shares of students enrolled on the courses available in an adult education centre in 1985 and today.

Overall, with the music appreciation and local history courses replaced with an IT one, the total number of courses has gone down from six to five. Among the remaining courses, cookery has seen an increase in the figure while the reverse has been true for modern languages and art, with fitness and dance having been the only one without any change in its percentage. In 1985, modern languages brought in the highest proportion of students, but now it is the new IT course that is making the greatest contribution to the total student number.

In 1985, the education centre offered six courses to its students. Modern languages (i.e., French, German, and Spanish) accounted for the largest proportion of the students that year, while fitness and dance came a close second, just 2 percentage points behind. Every sixth to every seventh student studied either art, local history, or cookery, while the remaining 8% was made up by the music appreciation students.

Today, the enrolment figures are visibly different as the centre now offers fewer courses, organising IT lessons instead of music appreciation and local history. This newly-added IT course has the largest share of students, while the second place is still held by fitness and dance, which has the same figure as it did in 1985. There has been a decrease in the figures of both art and modern languages (of 2 and a whole 7 points, respectively); on the other hand, the figure for cookery has increased, with almost every fifth student enrolled on this course.

Report:

The bar chart shows the changes in the proportions of population within different age brackets that used the internet on a daily basis from 2003 to 2006.

Overall, all age groups saw a general increase in their figures, which was especially pronounced with the two older age groups (the 55-64 and the 65+). However, that did not change the fact that, in all years, as people grew older, they were progressively less likely to go online every day.

Much higher proportions of people in the younger age brackets were active on the internet every day as compared to older people, but these figures increased only by a small margin over the years. By far the highest figures were shown by the youngest age bracket (16-24 years old): throughout the given period, at least four out of five people had a habit of using the internet daily, peaking at a whopping 90% in 2005. The next age group, including people from their early adulthood to their mid-forties, came second, increasing from slightly over 70% in 2003 to 80% in 2006.

In contrast, with older people, it was much less common to use the internet on a daily basis, but the percentages had a great increase overall. The 45-54 age group only had around 55% of active daily internet users in 2003, but after three years of fluctuations, the figure almost hit the 70-percent mark – a 15-point increase. Even more impressive changes could be seen with two oldest age groups. The figure for 55-64-year-olds almost doubled from the initial 31% to 55% in 2006, while the 65+ age group had a fivefold increase from a mere 4% in 2003 to a high of 20% in 2005.
