Gelman, S.E., Hearon, J.S., and Ellis, G.S (2025): Prospectivity mapping for geologic hydrogen: USGS Professional Paper 1900
----------------------
ABSTRACT

Geologic, or naturally occurring, hydrogen has the potential to become a new, low-carbon, primary energy resource. Often referred to as “white” or “gold” hydrogen, this gas occurs naturally in the Earth’s subsurface, similar to petroleum resources. However, unlike petroleum, which releases carbon dioxide when burned, burning hydrogen only produces water as a byproduct. Exploration for geologic hydrogen remains in an early stage and discoveries of high concentrations of subsurface hydrogen are still relatively rare. To facilitate research and exploration for this potential resource, this report presents the first publicly available prospectivity map of geologic hydrogen accumulations in the conterminous United States. Prospective regions are those regions in which all major components necessary for a hydrogen accumulation likely are present—a source of sufficient hydrogen generation, porous reservoirs for storage, and seals to prevent leakage. The midcontinent region of the United States and the central California coast are revealed as having high prospectivity. This analysis also identifies previously unrecognized prospective regions that may be favorable due to long distance lateral migration of subsurface hydrogen, such as the offshore eastern seaboard of the United States, and can provide a linkage between surface observations of hydrogen degassing and far-field source regions. The methodology developed to create this map is expandable and flexible and may be adapted to incorporate new concepts in the hydrogen system and for application to other regions of the world.

#GeneralKnowledge | What is liquefaction ?
--------
Liquefaction is a process by which water-saturated sediment temporarily loses strength and acts like a fluid.

What is the link to earthquake ?

Liquefaction takes place when loosely packed, water-logged sediments at or near the ground surface lose their strength in response to strong ground shaking. Liquefaction occurring beneath buildings and other structures can cause major damage during earthquakes.

What to consider when employing AI in the field of Geoscience?

Read this new article on "Ethical recommendations for Artificial Intelligence technology in the Geological Sciences - with a focus on Language Models"

Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers many opportunities for the geosciences to improve productivity, reduce uncertainty in models and stimulate discovery of new knowledge. There are also risks to geoscience, from the spread of obsolete, inaccurate and misinformation, to threats on fundamental human rights.

Whilst ethical AI frameworks exist from numerous institutions such as UNESCO, they are high level and lack practical detail in the geosciences particularly for Large Language Models (LLM). This is evidenced by the misalignment between the way current geoscience AI/LLMs are being designed, trained and deployed, with core ethical principles.

Using principles and frameworks from UNESCO and the International Science Council (ISC), a set of ten recommendations are proposed to bridge the gap between practice and these ethical frameworks. Critical Realism is used as an underlying philosophy which allows the potential to provide justifiable recommendations to ethical and moral questions using judgemental rationality.
These recommendations may help stakeholders in the international community reach conclusions on what ‘good looks like’ for ethical AI in the geological sciences focusing on Language Models and their applications. This may inform developers, regulators, policy advisors, journal editors, geological surveys, societies, institutions and unions, publishers, funding bodies, geoscientists and decision makers.

This is believed to be the first research paper on AI ethics in the geological sciences with a focus on Generative AI. Understanding the nuances of our ethical choices for both the development and use of LLMs and other AI tools in the geosciences, has the potential to positively impact science integrity, and critically, ensure fairness, personal privacy, democratic norms and human rights are safeguarded.

History of Tulu Kapi Gold Project: From 1936 to date
----
The Tulu Kapi gold project is in the West Oromia region of Ethiopia, approximately 550km west of Addis Ababa. The project is currently being financed by Kefi Minerals Plc with construction of an open pit mine planned to commence in early 2018. The total indicated and inferred resource is 20.2 @ 2.65 g/t gold for 1.72 Moz with an open pit ore reserve of 1.05 Moz gold.
Gold and platinum have been historically mined by alluvial and eluvial methods in the district and it is known that mining has been performed in the Arabian Nubian Shield (ANS) for at least 6,000 years, from thousands of an¬cient mines in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan and Eritrea (Johnson et al., 2011, Johnson et al., 2017). From 3,000 BC, the Pharaohs defined North Ethiopia as the Land of Punt, rich in resources such as gold, myrrh and ivory (Klemm et al., 2001).

Geological Remote Sensing From Continental to Exploration scales
------------
ABSTRACT

The recently deployed hyperspectral spaceborne Visible to Shortwave Infrared (VNIR-SWIR) wavelength sensors heralds a major development in geological remote sensing. These advances, together with airborne and spaceborne Thermal Infrared (TIR) wavelength sensors instruments, provide a wealth of new data for geoscientists. Such sensors follow the continuing extensive geological application of archived and currently acquired imagery from traditional multispectral VNIR-SWIR and TIR systems. In addition, there has been an ongoing development in algorithms applied to remote sensing imagery for mapping of mineralogy or thermal related properties. The effective application scale can vary from continental to exploration (e.g. mining industry) scales, depending on the image swath, temporal frequency, sensor resolution, signal to noise and the correction of atmospheric effects. These are still important issues in the application of geological remote sensing using such new sensors. This chapter is designed to provide a background of key principles, past developments, and the details and issues of the technology advances relevant for mineral mapping and geothermal case studies.

Fantale volcano: earthquakes, ground cracks suggest magma intrusion - precursors of new eruption?
------
Since early September 2024, a series of earthquakes has been shaking the area between Fantale and Dofen volcano in the Awash area of central Ethiopia, about 150 km northeast from the capital Addis. Several quakes have reached magnitudes of up to almost 5 and destroyed many houses.

Ground cracks have opened up, and some of them began to erupt hot water, some in the form of small geysers and steam explosions. Satellite data show that the ground has risen by up to 30 cm over a length of around 10 km in the same area.

This suggests that magma is currently intruding (or has intruded recently) underground. It might lead to a new eruption in the near future, or it might calm down and remain as an intrusion. This is something that cannot be predicted at this point, although the most recent information seems to suggest that the events have started to slow down.
