Many people believe that crime rates can be reduced by stricter laws and severe punishments, while others argue that there are better alternative ways to prevent crime.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Crime is currently one of the most pressing issues in many societies of the world, and people have different views on how the crime rate can be reduced effectively. While some individuals argue that imposing stricter laws and harsher punishments are the best solutions to deter crime, others hold the view that there are alternative ways to solve it. This essay will explore both perspectives before presenting my own view.

To deter crime, some people believe that governments must implement stricter laws and severe punishments. This is because this approach acts as a deterrent, resulting in the population avoiding criminal activities. Take— North Korea, as an example. Despite the high rate of poverty, people are afraid to commit a crime, as there are very strict punishments in this country, such as sending criminals to death and labor lagers or even shooting them in front of the public. This, as a result, helps people stay away far from crime, helping the country achieve one of the lowest crime rates.

However, I believe that there are other effective ways to reduce the crime rate in societies, one of which is improving employment opportunities. In fact, unemployment is one of the most concerning problems in many countries, and this is the one key driver that people commit crimes. If the government creates employment opportunities, the crime rate can be reduced significantly. Another alternative way is to create a better education system and encourage people to be educated, as many crimes come from a lack of education and being uneducated. Therefore, the government must create both employment and education facilities to prevent crime.

In conclusion, I believe that a balanced approach should be regulated to prevent crime in society. Although the former way acts as a deterrent source, I believe that the latter opinion is also a credible approach to reducing crime.

In many places large amounts of food are wasted
What might be the reasons for this problem?
What can be done to reduce food waste?
Nowadays, food waste is one of the fastest-growing problems in many countries of the world. This essay will explore what reasons are associated with this issue and what steps must be taken to address this problem.

There are several reasons why many people tend to waste food products. One key reason is overambitious shopping habits. In fact, the majority of people have a tendency to shop without a precise shopping list and buy what they want or what attracts them, which in turn results ultimately in unused and waste food. Another reason for food wastage is that many people have busy lifestyles which sets them boundaries to cook and eat at home. This, as a result, leads people to go outside to eat, and food products they have stored at home are wasted.

There are a couple of measures to tackle this issue, one of which is setting a clear shopping list. This way of shopping approach not only helps people to avoid impulse buying but also saves them money, and thus this is recommended to buy food products in a limited and sufficient amount. Plus, if people take time to cook at home and share meal time with families instead of eating out alone, for example, this would significantly reduce food waste. To do this, the media should inspire people to share eating habits with a circle of family through informing them on TV or the internet.

To conclude, although overambitious shopping habits and having a busy lifestyle are considered the main reasons why people waste large amounts of food, making only necessary shopping lists and the media’s effort to inspire people to eat with the family can solve this issue.

In some countries, the number of overweight children is increasing. Some argue that parents are to blame, while others believe that schools and governments should do more to tackle the issue.
Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

There has been a significant increase in obesity levels among young children in many nations of the world for the last decade. While some argue that parents are the blame for this phenomenon, others say that both schools and governments should shoulder this responsibility to address it. In my opinion, parents and schools, as well as the government are equally responsible for solving the obesity problem among children.

There are several reasons why parents have blamed their children of being overweight. One key reason why this is the case is that parents have a busy life, and they have to work long hours to provide the family with basic needs and cover daily expenses, which can distract them from looking after children sufficiently. Secondly, parents less concentrate on a child’s healthy diet, and allow them whatever they want to eat or consume, as their own are not aware of healthy consumption enough. Thirdly, in many families, parents are less likely to take their children to dieticians, which can result in improper eating habits and potential health problems.

However, I believe that schools and governments should also be responsible for tackling this issue. One way that schools should regulate is by accepting food lessons in addition to regular subjects. It is because if youngsters are taught food-based information effectively during lessons, they will avoid eating food items that are unhealthy and detrimental to their health. The government, on the other hand, plays a pivotal role in preventing this problem among the younger generation by conducting healthy activities. The most effective way that the government should do this is to hold sports competitions or contests regularly and reward them with different prizes such as diplomas, medals, and vouchers. This in turn makes children interested in attending sports competitions and winning prizes, resulting in avoiding unhealthy consumption.

In conclusion, although parents are considered to be blamed for the substantial increase in the level of children’s obesity, as they are disrupted with a busy lifestyle, allowing their children to eat what they desire, as well as less taking them regular medical check-ups are reasons for this problem, I still believe that both the school and the governments can alleviate this issue by conducting examples mentioned beforehand.

Today, many people do not know their neighbors.

Why is this?

What can be done about this?

In the modern world, many individuals do not know their neighbors or people who live around them. While there are several reasons behind this phenomenon such as the existence of a busy life and people’s tendency to socialize online instead of face-to-face, I believe that organizing parties or social gatherings in neighborhoods as well as socializing through regular interactions can address this issue.

One key reason why many people are unfamiliar with their next-door neighbors is their busy lifestyle. In fact, people especially in urban areas have to work long hours to provide family and cover daily needs and expenses, resulting to less time to spend socializing with people who live in the same neighborhoods. Another reason associated with this issue is that some people opt for digital communication. It is because they consider that socializing via the internet is more fun and provides an opportunity to know people from different walks of life compared to those who are from similar communities. Therefore, these can be reasons which people do not know neighbors enough.

However, I still believe that there are a couple of measures to solve this problem, one of which is organizing holidays or other social events in neighborhoods. Take my country- Uzbekistan. Many neighborhoods celebrate ‘Navruz’ holiday and organize big social gatherings to strengthen social bonds among people who live on the same street. This approach helps them to know each other well and makes them closer. Aside from that, having regular conversations between neighbors is likely to solve this issue especially offering neighbors in family parties or personal celebrations which this can foster strong relationship between them.

In conclusion, although a busy life and the preference of online talk are the reasons why many people do not recognize neighbors, I am still of the view that frequent social celebrations and gatherings, as well as invitations neighbors to family parties and personal celebrations, can address this problem.

True/False/Not Given questions based on a short passage.

Passage

The Amazon rainforest, often referred to as the "lungs of the Earth," produces 20% of the world's oxygen. However, recent studies have challenged this claim, stating that the Amazon's oxygen contribution is largely consumed by its own ecosystem. The forest plays a more crucial role in carbon sequestration, absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Deforestation in the Amazon has accelerated in the past decade, driven by agricultural expansion and illegal logging. While government policies aim to curb deforestation, enforcement has proven inconsistent. Conservation efforts by local communities and international organizations have shown promise, but the scale of deforestation remains a pressing global concern.

Questions

1. The Amazon rainforest produces one-fifth of the world’s oxygen.

2. Studies confirm that the Amazon rainforest's oxygen output is vital for the planet.

3. The Amazon is more important for carbon absorption than oxygen production.

4. Deforestation in the Amazon has slowed down in recent years.

5. International organizations have entirely halted deforestation in the Amazon.

Today, many people do not know their neighbors.

Why is this?

What can be done about this?

In the modern world, many individuals do not know their neighbors or people who live around them. While there are several reasons behind this phenomenon such as the existence of busy life and people’s tendency to socialize online to in-person talk, I believe that organizing parties or social gatherings in neighborhoods as well as socializing through regular offerings can address this issue.

One key reason why many people do not know their next-door neighbors is having a busy lifestyle. In fact, people especially in urban areas have to work long hours to supply family and cover daily needs and expenses, resulting in less time to spend socializing with people who live in the same neighborhoods. Another reason associated with this issue that some people opt for digital communication. It is because they consider that socializing via the internet is more fun and presents a window to know people from different walks of life compared to those who are from similar communities. Therefore, these can be reasons which people do not know neighbors enough.

However, I still believe that there are a couple of measures to solve this problem, one of which is organizing holidays or other social events in neighborhoods. Take my country- Uzbekistan. Many neighborhoods celebrate ‘Navruz’ holiday and organize big social gatherings to get along well people who live in the same street. This approach helps them to know each other well and makes them closer. Aside from that, having a regular talk between neighbors likely solve this issue in the form of offering in family parties or personal celebrations which this can lead to a strong relationship between them.

In conclusion, although busy life and the preference of online talk are the reasons why many people do not recognize neighbors, I am still of the view that frequent social celebrations and gatherings along with regular offerings of neighbors to family parties and personal celebrations can solve this problem.

The table illustrates the proportion of exports of kiwi fruit from New Zealand to five different countries- Japan, China, Mexico, Russia, and KSA- from 2010 to 2012.

Overall, while the value of Kiwi exports from New Zealand to Japan was by far the highest, Saudi Arabia saw the lowest export rate. Notably, the export value to Japan, China, and Russia increased significantly, whereas the reverse was true for Mexico and Saudi Arabia over three years.

In 2010, the highest export rate of kiwi fruit from New Zealand depended on Japan, accounting for $271, 1, and then the value of export rose considerably to $287,4 million in 2011 before the market price reached its peak in the final year, at $325,3 million. China was the second country where the highest export value was related, and the rate rose by $20 million, from $74, 9 million in 2010, to $94 million in 2012. Moreover, the export rate to Russia saw almost a triple rise, from $968 million in 2010 to $2, 4 million by 2012.

Regarding the export rate of kiwi fruit in Mexico and Saudi Arabia declined over the rest of the three years, in general. $ 6 million of the purchase rate related to Mexico in 2010, and the figure decreased to $2, 4 million before slightly rebounding to $3, 3 million in 2012. Finally, Saudi Arabia reduced its import rate of kiwi consistently from $29,000 to only $82,000 at the end of the period.

People these days watch TV, films and other programs alone rather than with other people.
Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Nowadays, many people tend to watch TV programs or movies on their own/solely rather than sharing viewing experiences with their family members or friends. Despite its advantages, I share the view that the drawbacks of this development outweigh the positives because watching TV programs with others can foster meaningful communication skills and bring more enjoyment.

On one hand, watching TV contents alone has some advantages for individuals. One key benefit of solitary viewing is that people are not interrupted by others, in which this can provide them with quiet atmosphere, resulting in a deeper focus and understanding of intricate narratives or subtle details of certain programs or films. Another advantage of this is that people can easily relax and avoid stress if they watch films or other programs alone compared to watching with others. It is because there is a discussion with others in programs which this can restrict enjoyment and increase high level of stress instead, as people argue over films and online TV contents.

I, on the other hand, still believe that watching TV programs and movies with a group of people/company benefits in many ways. One positive of this development is that people can share their opinions and perspectives with others and discuss over the TV commercials they have watched which this helps them to improve critical thinking and ideas. Plus, this way of watching habit could bring excitement to people, as sharing films or sports events, for example, is more fun and engaging with a company. Therefore, it seems more indulging to watch films and other TV programs with others than those of alone.

In conclusion, although watching films or TV programs provide people with quiet atmosphere and it likely helps to avoid high level of stress, I am still of the view that watching with family or friends can be more beneficial for especially improving communication skills, and it brings more enjoyment and fun, resulting in a good mood.

Text: The Giant Panda, native to the mountainous regions of China, primarily feeds on bamboo, consuming up to 12 kilograms per day. Despite their diet, pandas are technically carnivores, though they have adapted to a plant-based diet over time. Pandas once faced critical endangerment due to habitat loss and poaching; however, conservation efforts, including bamboo forest preservation, have helped increase their population. In 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reclassified the panda from "Endangered" to "Vulnerable," although some experts argue that its survival is still uncertain due to the ongoing effects of climate change.

Questions:

1. The Giant Panda's diet is entirely plant-based.

2. Conservation efforts have been successful in preventing the Giant Panda from going extinct.

3. All experts agree that climate change no longer threatens the survival of the Giant Panda.

The image explains how Pu-erh raw tea and ripe tea are made.

Overall, the process of making pu-erh raw tea and ripe tea is straightforward, involving roughly 5 steps and several natural phenomena.

Initially, lush green Pu-erh tea leaves are fried in a traditional pan over a wood fire to inactivate enzymes. This step is followed by rolling of leaves before they are placed in a wooden bowl and sun-dried. As a result, leaves turn loose, being ready for the next stages.

In the subsequent stage, loose raw tea leaves are fermented by mold, which makes them develop a dark brown skin and brittle structure. Once these leaves are compressed, Pu-erh ripe tea is ready.

Alternatively, mere compression of loose raw tea after being dried under the sun is enough to obtain Pu-erh raw tea, which then should be aged by storing if one wishes to enjoy vintage Pu-erh raw tea.

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of three different sectors-agriculture, industry and services- contributed to India’s gross domestic production between 1960 and 2000.

It is clear that gross domestic product contributed from agriculture declined dramatically, while services and industry saw a rather contrasting result, particularly with a significant increase in service sector.

In 1960, by far the highest contribution to India’s GDP came from agriculture, accounted over 60%, compared to industry and services stood at approximately 17 % 18%, respectively. However, there was a consistent reduction in agriculture from roughly 55% in 1970, to only 15% in the final year which the sector became the least income for GDP.

Gross domestic product contributed from industry rose moderately in 1980, at 25%, and the sector remained at this number until the end of the given period. Surprisingly, although services sector contributed the least to GDP initially, it increased significantly its portion to almost 30% before showing more than a double increase in 2000, at around 63%.
