The US Coast Guard has announced action to follow executive orders signed by President Trump last week:

“The US Coast Guard is the world’s premiere maritime law enforcement agency, vital to protecting America’s maritime borders, territorial integrity and sovereignty” said acting commandant Admiral Kevin Lunday.

“Per the President’s Executive Orders, I have directed my operational commanders to immediately surge assets—cutters, aircraft, boats and deployable specialized forces—to increase Coast Guard presence and focus starting with the following key areas:
•The southeast U.S. border approaching Florida to deter and prevent a maritime mass migration from Haiti and/or Cuba;
•The maritime border around Alaska, Hawai’i, the US territories of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands;
•The maritime border between the Bahamas and south Florida;
•The southwest maritime border between the US and Mexico in the Pacific;
•The maritime border between Texas and Mexico in the Gulf of America; and
•Support to Customs and Border Protection on maritime portions of the southwest US border.

Together, in coordination with our Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense teammates, we will detect, deter and interdict illegal migration, drug smuggling and other terrorist or hostile activity before it reaches our border.”

Among the confirmed dead 23% are contract troops, 17% are convicts, and 12% are mobilized troops. A few hours ago, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol introduced martial law in order to “eradicate pro-North Korean forces” that he says have entered the country’s government and “protect the free constitutional order.” Under Martial Law Command, all political activities in the country are prohibited. Additionally, strikes are prohibited, all media is placed under the control of the command, and all medical professionals are to return to work within 48 hours. Violators of the declaration are subject to warrantless search, detention, and arrest under Article 9 and may be punished under Article 14 of the Martial Law Act.

Security forces, lawmakers, and protesters rushed to the National Assembly building in Seoul. Multiple confrontations between military/police personnel and opposition lawmakers/protesters took place. Lawmakers were able to enter the building and voted 190-0 to declare the martial law proclamation as invalid. There are 300 seats in the chamber, leading many to question who did not vote.

According to officials, the Ukrainian Legion in Poland has received 500 applications in the last month from Ukrianians living in 30 countries. The legion is part of an effort to replenish the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces using the diaspora. Most of the applications have come from Poland and the Czech Republic, with others coming from the US, UK, Canada, and other nations. The unit will allow its personnel to return to their countries of residence after the completion of their service. This is an exception to a provision of the martial law the country finds itself in that bans men aged 18-60 from leaving Ukraine without special permission.

The legion’s recruitment center, based in Lublin, Poland, says that 80% of those that have applied have no prior military experience. While Ukraine needs all the personnel it can get if it wishes to continue the war, 500 is far shy of what the govt was hoping to receive. Not all of those that have applied will end up serving in the unit.

Journalists with RFE/RL have obtained Russia’s initial ceasefire proposal to Ukraine in the beginning of the invasion in 2022. The outlet says that they received the document from an unnamed Ukrainian source that was familiar with the negotiations and confirmed by an unnamed Russian source. The proposal was given to the Ukrainian side during the third round of negotiations in Belarus on March 7, 2022.

The six page document contains six pages and 18 articles of demands for peace with Ukraine. Russia demanded that Ukraine recognize the annexations of Crimea and Sevastopol, and the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (which have since been annexed by Russia). Another major demand that was unchanged and seemingly undisputed until talks were ended in April 2022 was Ukraine’s neutrality, promising to never join NATO or allowing foreign troops to be stationed in the country.

Russia’s other initial demands were:
-The Ukrainian Armed Forces be reduced to no more than 50,000 troops with 1,500 (a 500% reduction from early 2022)
-Ukraine cannot develop, produce, or deploy missiles with a range greater than 250km. Moscow also would reserve the right to ban Ukraine from using “any other types or weapons that may be developed as a result of scientific research”
-Ukraine must pay reparations for all infrastructure damaged in Donbas since the beginning of the war in 2014
-Ukraine and its allies must lift all sanctions and rescind all lawsuits against Russia since 2014
-Ukraine must redesignate Russian as an official state language and restore property rights of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate
-Ukraine must “permanently ban any prohibitions of symbols associated with victory over Nazisim” (repeal bans on Soviet-era symbols)
Russia offered Kyiv a “ceasefire regime” and “measures to halt combat operations’ in exchange for meeting these demands. Russian forces would not occupy more territory, but they would remain in place while Ukraine fulfills the demands. This would mean Russian troops just outside of Kyiv and other major cities for potentially multiple years. Additionally, Russia wanted an immediate end for foreign assistance to Ukraine and for Ukrainian troops to return to their garrisons.

In recent months, there has been growing sentiment that the war in Ukraine is slowly coming to an end (or at least the active phase of it) with Russia having the advantage. Adding to this sentiment is reporting from Hans von der Burchard of POLITICO. He says that unnamed German officials have expressed to him that Ukraine should take a “neutral” stance regarding Russia and NATO, similar to what Finland had before it joined the alliance.

Officials in Berlin have been discussing the possibility of creating a “contact group” with China, India, and Brazil to negotiate a settlement to the war. They believe that letting Ukraine (and the world) believe that NATO membership is possible would hinder efforts to establish this group.

Amid manpower, financial, aid, and leadership issues, Ukraine has been losing this war for a long time. As manpower shortfalls are getting worse, Western countries grow tired of supporting Ukraine, and the defense of southern Donbas is in jeopardy of collapsing, Ukraine may soon be forced to enter into negotiations with Russia. The latter currently holds the advantage and the situation is likely to sway more in their favor as time goes on.

The IDF has revealed that in “recent months” soldiers from the Egoz commando unit and Unit 504 of the Intelligence Directorate conducted a raid near Saida, a southern Syria village close to the border. They captured a Syrian man named Ali Suleiman al-Aadi, who they say was working on behalf of Iranian intelligence. The IDF says his arrest has “prevented and disrupted a future attack and led to the exposure” of Iranian entities near the Golan Heights. During his interrogation, al-Aadi said that he was approached by an Iranian man who directed him to report on Israeli patrols in the Golan Heights to Syrian military intelligence. This is the first time that the IDF has acknowledged operating in Syria since the war began, although there have been other unclaimed operations.

In the House, the GOP has gained 212 seats and the Democrats 197. 26 seats are still in play. Decision Desk gives the GOP an 89.8% chance to take the House with a four seat majority of 222 seats.

Many things could be said about the successes of Trump’s campaign and the failures of Harris’. I’ll leave you all with just a few notes that are think are interesting/important. The GOP won almost every border county in Texas. They’ve also flipped remaining Democratic strongholds in the Rio Grande Valley. This is a process that really began in 2020, flipping countries that in some cases were held by Democrats for over 120 years. In the last eight years, Star and Maverick counties have shifted to the GOP by 70-80%.

In Michigan, Arab voters added to his victory. Anger over the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the war in the Middle East appears to have driven Arabs in the city of Dearborn away from the Democratic Party. The city has the nation’s largest population of Middle Eastern descent by percentage; 55%. Trump won the Democrat stronghold with 48.5%. Harris received 36.3% and Green Party candidate Jill Stein received 18.4%. Trump also won neighboring Dearborn Heights, which has a large Arab population as well.

The last point I’ll leave you with is this: If it wasn’t already clear that Trump’s victory was unique and absolute; his margin of votes in almost every state increased since 2020. In 48 out of 50 states, the margin shifted in his favor; in some cases by more than 10%. This includes deep blue states like California, Connecticut, and New York.

Election Recap:
To put it plainly, former President Donald Trump’s win over Vice President Kamala Harris was decisive. Trump won 312 electoral college votes; Harris won 226. Trump won all seven swing states: Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. In 2020, he only took North Carolina. He also won the popular vote, which has not been done by a Republican since George W. Bush in 2004.

In the Senate, the Republicans have regained the majority with 53 seats for the first time in four years. In addition to legislative priorities, I believe Senate Republicans will place an emphasis on confirming federal judges, as they did from 2016-2020. The Supreme Court will also be something to watch as three justices are in their 70s. I doubt Sotomayor would leave the court and give Trump the opportunity to grow the conservative majority; but Thomas and Alito might retire so Trump can solidify that majority for the foreseeable future.

Four Israeli suspects were recently arrested in the country over a scandal involving the leaking of classified documents on the war in Gaza. Among the suspects are Netanyahu spokesman Eli Feldstein and an unnamed Netanyahu aide.

According to Israeli broadcaster Kan, the aide has worked closely with Netnayahu since the beginning of the war, despite not being employed by his office. The aide regularly attended security meetings, and was exposed to highly classified information, even though he failed a background check for a security clearance. The judge overseeing the case said that the leaks could have caused “significant damage” to efforts to free the remaining hostages held by Hamas.

The IDF, thru Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, has sent a letter to right-wing Channel 14 after the network posted a clip making fun of Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi. The letter says that the IDF expects the network to remove the clip and that it has already contacted Israel’s commercial broadcasting regulatory body and two govt ministers regarding the clip.

The letter reads: "I am contacting you following the video published last night on Channel 14, which included inflammatory and defamatory content that harms the IDF. It is inconceivable that a media channel in the State of Israel gives a platform for inflammatory content against the IDF during a war," reads the letter by IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.

Hagari writes that the military is "not afraid of criticism and even encourages an open and sharp public discourse" on the IDF amid the war.

Turkey is currently responding with strikes against Kurdish groups in Syria and Iraq. The PKK has a presence in both countries; however there are also multiple Kurdish armed groups that are allied to the PKK, but are their own entities. Turkey sees all of these groups, namely the YPG, as branches of the PKK. The MoD says that 32 Kurdish targets have been hit and more strikes are underway. Heavy strikes have hit Kobani, Syria, a majority Kurdish town that is under the control of the YPG-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The casualty toll in the attack on Turkish Aerospace Industries in Ankara is six dead and 14 wounded, including the two attackers that were killed. TAI is one of Turkey’s largest defense companies and the attack has been blamed on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is designated as a terrorist group in Turkey.

This comes one day after Devlet Bahceli, a nationalist leader and MP in the ruling coalition, invited the imprisoned leader of the PKK to make a speech at the parliament to disband the group. The suggestion by Bacheli, especially as a leading nationalist and ally to President Erdgodan, is a major development considering the PKK has fought an insurgency against Turkey for nearly 46 years, leading to tens of thousands of deaths. Any potential peace process or discussions are in jeopardy after this attack.

This attack also took place in the Kazan district of Ankara, which is worthy of note as Turkish Pres. Erdogan is currently in Kazan, Russia for the BRICS Summit.
