September 28-29, 2024
Nepal. Kathmandu.

Floods and landslides hit Nepal. At least 66 people have been killed and more than 1,000 rescued after heavy rains lashed the Himalayan country. Most of the deaths were in the Kathmandu Valley, home to four million people. Some parts of the city have received up to 322.2 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. Flooded rivers have inundated Kathmandu, stranding residents on rooftops and high ground. Three highways, including the key Prithvi Highway connecting Kathmandu to the rest of the country, have been blocked by landslides triggered by the rains. Much of Kathmandu was without power and internet for some time. While international flights are still operating, many domestic flights have been disrupted by the weather. Nepal has recorded 254 deaths and 65 missing due to floods, landslides and lightning strikes since the annual rains began in mid-June.
