DON'T PANIC! There is absolutely no reason to do so. And don't feed the sensationalism either.

I am here to ease your fears.

There’s been a lot of disinformation recently that has inflated the scale of Russia’s territorial gains in Ukraine. The Kremlin seems to be hoping people don’t pay attention to the numbers, so it’s important to break things down and understand the math behind it all. The next time you hear someone talk about Russia’s daily gains, you can calmly explain just how unimpressed you are by the reality of the situation.

The biggest misconception people need to understand is that Russia actually controls a much smaller area of Ukraine than they did in 2022. Back in March 2022, Russia controlled 27% of the country. As of now, that control has dropped to just above 20%. How is this possible? The initial invasion saw Russia make rapid territorial gains, which is typical for them—large troop formations pushing forward in massive assaults. The problem, however, is that they completely overlooked logistics. Their advances stalled, and in some cases, entire convoys literally ran out of fuel. At the very start of the war, Ukraine managed to capture large amounts of Russian equipment that had either run out of gas or, in some cases, was abandoned due to flat tires with no spare parts to fix them. This even happened with one of Russia’s prized satellite and electronic warfare complexes.

Fast forward to November 2022, when Ukraine launched a surprise counteroffensive. That action forced Russia's control of Ukraine to fall from the peak of 27% back down to only 18%. Despite the passage of time, Russia’s territorial gains have been slow, and they haven’t come close to reclaiming that 27% control. With the rate at which they’ve been advancing, they won’t be reaching that level of control anytime soon.

Now, let's look at the math.

In October and November 2024, Russia gained 610 km² and 725 km², respectively. In December, this slowed to just 465 km². For simplicity, let’s assume an average gain of 600 km² per month, although in reality, the chances of maintaining this rate are slim.

-To get back to 27% control (163,000 km² from the current 119,000 km²):

-Difference in territory: 163,000 km² - 119,000 km² = 44,000 km²

-Months to gain 44,000 km²: 44,000 km² ÷ 600 km²/month = 73.3 months

-This means, to regain what they controlled in March 2022, Russia would need approximately 6.1 years, assuming they can continue at their best pace.

But let’s say Russia wants to go for broke and capture the entire country:

-Months to gain 484,500 km²: 484,500 km² ÷ 600 km²/month = 807.5 months

-This translates to 67.3 years to capture all of Ukraine.

So, yes—if Russia decided to push for full control, it would take them 67.3 years to take the rest of Ukraine. And all this for a "superpower" invading a country that’s 96.5% smaller than Russia itself.

In 2024, the russians occupied 4,168 square kilometers of territory at the cost of 420,000 soldiers, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

By December 2024, the russian advance slowed down.

Geolocation data shows that russian forces gained only 593 square kilometers, which amounts to 18.1 square kilometers per day. At the same time, daily russian casualties remained high, with an average of 1,585 soldiers lost per day, marking the fourth highest historical casualty rate for russia.

Germans support sending peacekeepers to Ukraine, but not theirs

54% of surveyed Germans support the deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine in principle if a ceasefire occurs.

This is according to Deutsche Welle, which cites a YouGov poll commissioned by the DPA news agency, conducted online between 20 and 23 December, with 2,194 participants.

As per the survey, 19% of respondents are fundamentally opposed to the idea, while 25% remain undecided.

When asked if they support Germnay’s direct participation in the peacekeeping, the sentiment differs among the respondents. Just 23% want the country to put boots on the ground, while 33% reject the idea altogether.

The deployment of peacekeepers is one of the key elements of a potential peace push floated by President-elect Donald Trump. The goal would be to ensure that russia doesn’t continue its territorial conquest in the war-torn country.

russian Prisoners are deprived of payments.

The government has " changed " the procedure for lump sum payments for citizens who signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense to be sent to war in Ukraine.

Now such payments are not due to persons who signed a contract while in prison or a colony.

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed the corresponding resolution on December 28. The document was published on the legal acts portal on December 30 and will enter into force on January 1, 2025.

The opportunity to be released from criminal prosecution with the help of a military contract became available to convicted persons in 2023. In March 2024, the State Duma adopted a law that allows suspects, accused and convicted persons for minor and moderate crimes to be released from liability.

Back in March 2024 Moldova was making alternative arrangements for energy supplies.

Support for Moldova’s energy security with €30.8 million loan for electricity network development.

EBRD lends €30.8 million to Moldova to link to European electricity grid via Romania.

Project costing €77 million to be co-financed by European Investment Bank, EU

Moldova implements EU Third Energy Package.

The EBRD is lending €30.8 million to Moldova and its state-owned electricity company Moldelectrica to link the country’s network to that of its European Union neighbour, Romania, by constructing a high-voltage transmission line between the Moldovan city of Balti and the Romanian border.

Moldelectrica, which is implementing the European Union’s Third Energy Package, will also use the loan to rehabilitate its internal electricity transmission network and build a 400 kV (kilovolt) substation at Balti.

The Balti-Suceava project, costing a total of €77 million, is co-funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), which is also lending €30.8 million. The European Union’s Neighbourhood Investment Platform (NIP) will provide a €15.4 million grant.

The project’s aim is to increase Moldova’s energy security by accelerating the country’s integration with the European grid, ENTSO-E, as well as to strengthen the country’s integration with its European neighbours.

The loan agreement was signed in Chisinau by the EBRD’s Head of Moldova, Catarina Bjorlin Hansen, and Moldova’s Energy Minister, Victor Parlicov.

More than 80 per cent of electricity consumed domestically in Moldova came historically from the unrecognised breakaway region of Transnistria, along with imports from Ukraine via a grid connecting several former Soviet republics.

Moldova has been working since 2015 to diversify sources through closer links with Romania and has one interconnection line to Romania (the Vulcanesti-Issaccea line).

This avoids converting Russian gas into electricity, by having direct supplies of electricity from the other direction. @ukrainejournal
