Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization.

Why might be the case?
What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

A significant number of people today opt for self-employment instead of being an employee. While monetary benefits along with freedom are the prime drivers behind this trend, there appear to be several downsides to embarking on a business path.

The potent reason why many desire to run their own businesses rather than working for someone has to do with the freedom that comes together with this decision. That is, employees often have no other alternative but to abide by the regulations at workplace, say, dress code or fixed arrival and departure time. In case of disobeying these rules, staff can be penalized either with demotion or financial penalty. By contrast, when people launch their own work, they set their own regulations, allowing for more freedom during their office hours. Furthermore, self-employed individuals are likely to enjoy better living standards due to higher income. If one succeeds in managing private enterprise, they also benefit from more financial prosperities compared to their counterparts working for the salary.

However promising being an independent business owner may appear, it is by no means without shortcomings. Little to entrepreneurs know that they themselves are hold accountable for both success and failure of their businesses. Despite the possibility to earn more, these people are those who suffer the most during economic recessions. For example, the 2008 world crises drove many private businessmen to the verge of bankruptcy as they risked with their money investing in mortgage packages offered by commercial banks. Nor do self-employed people receive compensations for a sick leave or holiday entitlement. On the contrary, working for someone means stable income and perks even in the days of economic upheaval. To make the matter even worse, business owners often have to handle heightened stress levels due to excessive working hours while the rights of employees in governmental organizations are often reserved, limiting their office hours. This excessive burden on employers not only aggravates their health but also makes it hard to strike work-life balance.

To conclude, as much as a private entrepreneur gains from an increased autonomy and financial prospects, their health and long-term prosperity of business in economic downturn are at stake while deciding to reject working for others.

I have just heard from a student wanting to join our classes that there are months during which it is not advised to take the test. And there are months when you get high score. I have been working in the field for more than 7 years and have taken the exam in almost every month. Personally, I have never observed such an algorithm which promises you a magic help. As for the changes with questions on the speaking app, once you improve your speaking skills instead of memorizing your answers, you can ace your test in any month.

And this is just the opinion of some incompetent so-called IELTS instructors who only take the test once in a lifetime and talk big about things they have no idea of. If your instructor starts talking about shortcuts, tell them to do their job and teach the language instead.

#WordOfTheDay

🤓 When you have a proclivity, it feels automatic — you like what you like; you don't even have to think about it. The origin of the word proclivity supports this feeling. Proclivity comes from the Latin word proclivis, which literally means "sloping forward."

You slide toward a proclivity — no effort is needed. You just give in to it, since you're headed in that direction naturally.

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

The debate over inserting a growth mindset in children revolves around whether it entails more positives or negatives. The advantages of this message are as diverse as its disadvantages.

Admittedly, there are decided drawbacks to sensitizing children to the primacy of hard work. When they are told that their unwavering determination and persistent efforts can allow for success in all their endeavors, they may foster a distorted and blurred concept about actual achievement. That is, the more a child is told that there is nothing unattainable, the less likely they are to grasp the magnitude of what they need to accomplish, thinking that the significance of industriousness transcends boundaries in human potential. This illusive notion of success makes children more prone to failure as their undertakings may run the risk of not matching with their capabilities. In addition, having incessantly heard about the value of hard work, young minds may fall into thinking that their surroundings set high expectations on them, which in turn, exposes them to mounting psychological burden. This decidedly interferes with their well-rounded mental growth seeing as they feel overwhelmed with efforts to fulfil others’ expectations.

Nevertheless, this way of upbringing yields wide-ranging tangible benefits. First and foremost, despite developing misconception about the essence of accomplishment, children are also likely to acquire invaluable personal traits, say, tenacity and determination. Little do opponents know that these qualities are more significant in many facets of life. For example, with necessary characteristics and mindset gained in childhood, one is to prosper in their future careers, overcoming possible barriers along the way. In addition, while the odds for failure still exist when giving a low priority to the magnitude of success, children will anyway become resilient in the face of downfall. But for this quality, they would foster defeatist attitude, failing to unleash their full potentials.

To conclude, those with a growth mindset can potentially suffer from misconception of success, leading to failure, yet they enjoy more promising effects on their characteristics, hence the downsides of this message being pale in comparison to the upsides.

Many manufactured food and drinks contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar.

Do you agree or disagree?

The argument over health hazards of sugar-laden consumption revolves around whether sugary products ought to be levied a hefty tax. In my opinion, though this measure could be effective to some extent, it fails to address the problem thoroughly.

Admittedly, outrageous prices of food and drinks rich in sugar can somehow dissuade people from purchasing them. That is, as the costs of these goods rise, so will people’s reluctance to buy them. This is because many people are unwilling to spend an additional amount while they are still making ends meet to afford the basic living expenses. In addition, once manufacturers of sugary products experience a drop in the sales, they are also prone to shift their market focus to the production of healthier alternatives so as to stay afloat and cover their overheads.

However promising imposing tax may appear to counter the effect of sugar-coated products, it still fails to yield the desired outcome. Little do authorities know that a hike in prices may only deter those below poverty line from consuming sugar, while the affluent might still keep indulging in their insatiable appetite for sugar. This taxation, therefore, can only work against the interest of the poor, violating their consumer rights and eventually causing public outcry. Not only may this measure trigger discrimination of the disadvantaged, but a heavy tax can drive many businesses to the verge of bankruptcy. When productions costs soar, exceeding profits, hardly can manufacturers sustain their businesses, which may even cause the unemployment of many and recession of local economies.

To conclude, I admit that exorbitant costs of sugary products can be deterrent to consume them on some grounds, yet this taxation will still not discourage the well-off and lead to several economic ramifications. Thus, I firmly oppose this solution.
