My Dark Rosaleen!
My own Rosaleen!
Oh! there was lightning in my blood,
Red lightning lightened through my blood,
My Dark Rosaleen!"

MEON is proud to re-publish James Clarence Mangan’s Dark Rosaleen, along with an essay which contextualises Mangan’s poetry in light of his time.

What Are Sinn Féin Privately Thinking on Immigration? "Just two years ago Sinn Féin was stuck in a mode of mouthing the shrillest pro-immigration slogans. Now it’s criticising open borders and voting against hate speech measures on conservative grounds. In another two years’ time, especially after an election drubbing which is interpreted as a rejection of its lingering pro-immigration image, the party will be moving closer to even supporting a policy of remigration. Don’t be so quick to dismiss this possibility; who could’ve guessed that the militant “young Turks” from Belfast who took over the party in the 1980s would in fact end up bringing the party to a compromise agreement. Sinn Féin is nothing if not cynical and flexible, just as all political parties are."

"McCreevy’s assertion stands up to scrutiny: from 1996-2016 Ireland’s population grew at 1.3% per year, triple the EU average. To accommodate such a massive increase in immigration the Irish government embarked on a housing bonanza that exceeded many other jurisdictions precisely due to such a massive population increase."

"The general election represents a golden opportunity for an Irish right wing to unify under a coherent political coalition at last and it must not be squandered. Ireland is the last major country in Western Europe without a right-wing nationalist opposition represented in its parliament and a TD elected in Dáil Éireann will finally break that curse."

"Ireland’s history is still not properly understood even by the faux-intellectual class created over the past three decades. Academics battle one another to determine who can craft the most emotional, pacifist retelling of the War of Independence or the Troubles – yet the historical memory of the Famine is ignored. Irish history in the public mind is an enigma prior to the year 1916 as Republicanism has subsumed all that came before it, leaving passionate popular memory of the 1641 Rebellion, Emmett’s Rebellion, and the Famine largely absent from Irish public life in the twenty-first century."

"There is a vile, skulking, servile spirit abroad…. a lying, dastardly spirit it prates about British greatness and British magnanimity, and foretells us devoted Britishers when we have got our “rights”; it derides nobility allied with failure and, when a voice is raised on behalf of the cause for which men died, it sniggles of ‘Cabbage gardens’ and ‘Battles of Tallaght’. We shall strive to exorcise that spirit and to make its harbourers loathsome as leprosy in the sight of the people."
