1. RBI Designation of D-SIBs: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reaffirmed State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank as Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs), also called "too-big-to-fail" institutions.

2. Capital Buffer Updates:
- SBI: Additional capital buffer to rise from 0.60% to 0.80% of risk-weighted assets from April 1, 2025.

- HDFC Bank: Buffer requirement to double from 0.20% to 0.40% starting April 1, 2025.

3. Regulatory Framework: The D-SIB framework, introduced in 2014, assigns banks to categories based on size and economic impact, with higher categories requiring stricter capital norms.

4. Historical Designation:
- SBI and ICICI Bank were designated as D-SIBs in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
- HDFC Bank joined the list in 2017 and moved to a higher category after merging with HDFC last year.

5. Purpose: Ensures financial stability by mandating strong financial safeguards to prevent disruptions in case of bank collapses.

Public Sector Banks (PSBs) vs Private Banks
1. Robust Performance by PSBs:
- PSBs outperformed private banks in net profit growth during Q2 FY25, achieving 39.3% year-on-year growth, compared to 7.1% for private banks.

2. Key Growth Drivers: Improved asset quality, lower provisioning costs, and higher interest income contributed to PSBs' financial strength.
3. Profitability Milestone: For the first time in recent years, PSBs collectively surpassed private banks in profitability, boosting market sentiment and investor confidence.
