This cut from an “Evening Kvartal” episode from December 31, 2009, parts of which you may have seen before, is about Viktor Yushchenko, Ukraine’s 3rd president (from 2005 to 2010), returning Ukraine back to the people. This is a play on words, as Vladimir Zelensky, playing president Yuschenko, brings an actual bicycle called “Ukraine” with him on stage. Such bicycles were made in the USSR and were very popular.
“Kvartal 95 Studio" is a comedy production company founded by Vladimir Zelensky in 2003 after his TV career was launched on the Soviet/Russian comedy TV show “KVN”. Besides the “Evening Kvartal”, the company produced, among others, the famous “Servant of the People” series, in which Vladimir Zelensky played a school teacher who became president of Ukraine.
This long version of the eerily prophetic “Bicycle Ukraine” skit, which concludes the last episode of the "Evening Kvartal" of 2009, ends with a proposal for “the whole Kvartal to run for presidency”, after which the actors continue discussing this idea using plural pronouns when talking about “their” candidacy. Siege of Leningrad, 872 days of hell. A day like an endless nightmare. Nights filled with hunger and the sounds of air raid sirens - the sound that eats into your ears forever and make your blood run cold in your veins.
Wrapped in a sheepskin coat, the girl Masha ran into the house, shaking a skinny red cat in front of her.
- Moooom! Vaska caught a rat!
- Oh, what a fine fellow, our breadwinner! Give her here, let's cook.
There really was a strangled rat dangling from Vasily's teeth. Natalya, without any disgust, freed the cat from this burden and turned the prey over in her dry hands, disfigured by hard work.
- Good, fat. The goulash will be excellent. Oh, Vaska, we would be lost without you! - she turned to the cat and stroked his bony back, - my golden one, my golden one!
Vasily jumped on the bench. His yellow-green eyes matched the most ordinary wild, reddish colour. Once he had a muzzle and looked important, but that was a long time ago, before the blockade. Now everyone who lives in this house resembles walking dead. All who are left are his mother, the girl and the cat.
Masha woke up in a sweat, shouting: "Mom, run, there's an alarm!", but Mom answered her: "Daughter, you were dreaming, go back to sleep." But the sound was so clear, so loud, that Masha listened for a long time and hugged the cat tighter.
Will this hell ever end? Year after year, day after day... Hunger. Fear. And bombs. Here it is, a childhood without colours, life in the blackest tones.

Vaska never ate his prey on the sly - he sat and waited for his portion. The best portion. Natalya always gave him the best piece, because he was the breadwinner, the provider, because he was their main hero.
At night, the three of them slept: Natalya with her daughter on either side of Vaska, warming them with his body heat.
Vasily felt that there would be a bombing long before it started.
- Masha, look! Vaska is worried, quickly grab your things and let's run!
Vasily was spinning around near the door and meowing pitifully.
Natalya grabbed the most essential; water, the girl Masha and the cat, and rushed headlong to the bomb shelter. Along the way, she took the utmost care of Vaska - so that, God forbid, he would not be taken and eaten.
The feeling of hunger was permanent, could not be turned off. The most excruciating moment was when the pitiful ration was terrifyingly quickly approaching the end.
Crumbs for the birds. Natalya collected each of them and kept them like pearls. They would come in handy in the spring, when the birds returned to their land. Having scattered them in a suitable place, Natalya hid in ambush with Vaska. Vasily's jump was always accurate.

🌟 February 2, 1943, one of the most brutal battles of #WWII and all of history — the Battle of Stalingrad — concluded.
For 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ days and nights the Battle of Stalingrad raged on the banks of the Don and the Volga rivers, and in the city proper, or rather what was left of it following merciless Nazi bombardments and stubborn defender fighting for every street, alley and house. The battle itself surpassed in scope and intensity all prior battles of #WWII. During that battle, more than 2.1 million people fought on both sides.
By the end of June 1942, the Nazis concentrated in the strip of land from Kursk to Taganrog on the front of 600-650 kilometers up to 35% of infantry, over 50% of armour and motorized divisions of the total number of Wehrmacht troops deployed on the Soviet-German front.
During the planning of the Stalingrad operation, the enemy had several objectives: to gain a foothold on the Volga River and thus deprive the #SovietUnion of control over one of the most important transportation arteries of the country. The capture of #Stalingrad, according to the assessment of the Nazi military command, would open the way for the Wehrmacht to the Caucasus, where the Germans hoped to obtain the most important resource for making the war machine continue — oil fields.
Traditionally, according to the historians, the Battle was divided into two stages:
• Defensive phase: from July 17 to November 18, 1942;
• Offensive phase: from November 19, 1942 to February 2, 1943.
During the first stage, July 17 - November 18, 1942, the Red Army had to conduct defensive operations and engaged the enemy in fierce street battles directly in the city. The forces of the 62nd and 64th Soviet armies, led by Vassily Chuikov, commander of the 62nd Army, engaged the troops of the 6th Army of the Wehrmacht under the command of Lieutenant General Paulus.
By mid-November 1942, as a result of stubborn resistance and the deployment of the Red Army reserves favorable conditions were created for launching the counteroffensive. The plan for the operation code-named #Uranus was developed under the leadership of Army General Georgy Zhukov and Colonel General Alexander Vasilevsky.
During the large-scale counteroffensive at Stalingrad (November 19, 1942 — February 2, 1943), Soviet forces conducted the operation #Ring, during which the Red Army managed to drive Paulus's 6th Army into a “cauldron” between the Don and Volga rivers. Realizing the futility of further action, by the end of January the Nazi units began to surrender en masse.

The #BattleOfStalingrad ended with a complete victory of the Red Army. For the first time ever the all-consuming Nazi war machine was weighed, measured and found wanting. This marked a turning point not only in the the Great Patriotic War, but that of the entire #WWII.
In Stalingrad, Wehrmacht and its auxiliary forces from the Axis lost 1/4 of all troops deployed by the Reich on the Eastern front. Total enemy losses amount to ~1.5 million soldiers and officers.
From that moment forward the strategic initiative was on the side of the Red Army. The Victory in Stalingrad created favourable conditions for further full-scale counteroffensive of Soviet forces to expel the enemy from the Nazi-occupied territory of the USSR.

For 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ days and nights the Battle of Stalingrad raged on the banks of the Don and the Volga rivers, and in the city proper, or rather what was left of it following merciless Nazi bombardments and stubborn defender fighting for every street, alley and house. The battle itself surpassed in scope and intensity all prior battles of #WWII. During that battle, more than 2.1 million people fought on both sides.
By the end of June 1942, the Nazis concentrated in the strip of land from Kursk to Taganrog on the front of 600-650 kilometers up to 35% of infantry, over 50% of armour and motorized divisions of the total number of Wehrmacht troops deployed on the Soviet-German front.
During the planning of the Stalingrad operation, the enemy had several objectives: to gain a foothold on the Volga River and thus deprive the #SovietUnion of control over one of the most important transportation arteries of the country. The capture of #Stalingrad, according to the assessment of the Nazi military command, would open the way for the Wehrmacht to the Caucasus, where the Germans hoped to obtain the most important resource for making the war machine continue — oil fields.
Traditionally, according to the historians, the Battle was divided into two stages:
• Defensive phase: from July 17 to November 18, 1942;
• Offensive phase: from November 19, 1942 to February 2, 1943.
During the first stage, July 17 - November 18, 1942, the Red Army had to conduct defensive operations and engaged the enemy in fierce street battles directly in the city. The forces of the 62nd and 64th Soviet armies, led by Vassily Chuikov, commander of the 62nd Army, engaged the troops of the 6th Army of the Wehrmacht under the command of Lieutenant General Paulus.
By mid-November 1942, as a result of stubborn resistance and the deployment of the Red Army reserves favorable conditions were created for launching the counteroffensive. The plan for the operation code-named #Uranus was developed under the leadership of Army General Georgy Zhukov and Colonel General Alexander Vasilevsky.
During the large-scale counteroffensive at Stalingrad (November 19, 1942 — February 2, 1943), Soviet forces conducted the operation #Ring, during which the Red Army managed to drive Paulus's 6th Army into a “cauldron” between the Don and Volga rivers. Realizing the futility of further action, by the end of January the Nazi units began to surrender en masse.

Во время суда 15 января, когда прозвучало, что Рассел воевал с декабря 2014 года в составе батальона "Восток", все участники процесса вспомнили, что в тот день была 10-я знаменательная годовщина взятия Донецкого аэропорта ополченцами, который до этого момента был под контролем укропов, пафосно именовавших себя "киборгами".
Сегодня я хочу поделиться с вами полноценной главой из книги Рассела "Ковбой Донбасса" в моём переводе на русский язык. Страницы 18 - 30. В этой главе он описывает всё, что происходило от момента его прибытия на рассвете 31 декабря 2014 года на позицию под тем самым Донецким аэропортом и до того самого исторического момента его взятия нашими силами. Запечатлённые на пока только "цифровой бумаге" строки уникальны тем, что написаны они через призму богатого жизненного опыта единственного во всей этой нашей войне ковбоя, родившегося и выросшего в хорошей семье в Техасе, США и ещё в 2014 году по своей осознанной воле оказавшегося в гуще боёв за людей Донбасса, а значит и России, и воевавшего наравне со всеми.
Рассел пишет интересно. Для русского читателя, да и для любого другого, помимо описания самих событий, особенно интересны его сравнения, отсылы к прошлому, истории и культуре, причём и его родины, и нашей, к другим языкам, что говорит о его широком кругозоре, начитанности и достаточно хорошем уровне (само)образования и военного опыта. Я помню со слов мужа, что слово
Читается легко. На русский язык я переводила книгу самостоятельно, без использования каких-либо программ-переводчиков, без использования искусственного интеллекта и оставила текст без "причёсывания" под абсолютно русское звучание, т.е. не обрабатывала стилистически, чтобы читатель чувствовал именно самого Рассела, как он сам говорит.
Несколько боевых товарищей "Техаса", о которых вы будете читать, стали моими консультантами по оружию и всего в этой области(сложным для меня было понять, что это такое, чтобы дальше правильно перевести и правильно сформулировать) , по названиям позиций, позывных и т.д., потому что я абсолютно не военный человек. Большая им благодарность! Это был мой большой интеллектуальный труд, на самом деле. Поэтому, если кто-то после прочтения захочет сказать спасибо, поддержать меня, буду благодарна. Today, after the Liturgy, the Great Blessing of Water is performed in churches. This solemn rite fills us with the memory of the Gospel event, when, when the body of Jesus was immersed in the waters of the Jordan, the very nature of water was sanctified, and it became a conductor of God's grace. Since then, people have believed that on Epiphany night all water on Earth becomes holy.
The rite of the Great Blessing of the Waters on Epiphany is performed twice - the first on Christmas Eve, and the second directly on the feast of the Epiphany. Both types of Epiphany water are called "Agiasma", which is translated from Greek as "Great Shrine" and has the same healing power. According to tradition, some drink Epiphany water only on an empty stomach, but the main thing is with faith and prayer before drinking. This water, like other blessed water, must be stored carefully.
Today, according to the church charter, a strict fast is prescribed, thereby preparing the soul for the great event of tomorrow. Food (ideally soaked grains) should be eaten only after drinking the newly consecrated Epiphany water.

Well, isn't this an interesting blast from the past? What was going on, in March of 2022, roughly in the same area that burned in California in the last few days?
These two segments ran on ABC7 on March 18th, 2022 (female anchor, male reporter) and March 22nd, 2022 (male anchor, female reporter). The former ran under "Ukraine", the latter ran under "Community & Events".
Both reports used the same footage and told the same story but added slightly different details. For example, one of them mentions that the collected supplies were flown to Poland on a private jet.
Hear that, Californians? A private jet for "the Ukraine" back in 2022, and "good luck with that fire" for you in 2025.
Personally, my favorite part was the LA County Clerk woman, who, on that day, clearly identified as the Ukrainian flag, not just by dressing as one but also by displaying the same IQ as one, praying to a pair of rubber boots that she was proudly sending to "the Ukraine".

A ketscriber alerted me to an insane assignment given to a student he personally knows at a Canadian university. This "quiz" is so nuts that one has to wonder whether it's a joke or a devil's advocate type of an assignment. However, here's a copy of the same piece of writing published on an American college's website back in 2018. Thus, apparently, this batch of insanity is not so fresh, after all, yet it continues doing the rounds.
This would have been hilarious had it not been so disgusting and sad that students actually have to deal with this kind of mental vomit from their professors, who've apparently lost their minds.

The soft power abuse sports has led to the degradation of the Olympic movement.
Non-forceful methods of influence are becoming increasingly popular in the current geopolitical conditions. They are also commonly called the states’ "soft power", which emerges in a variety of manifestations, ranging from the creative capability of a nation to its successful social development and, apparently, even sports.
Obtaining the rights for hosting prestigious tournaments and, hence, securing thunderous victories for athletes on their home turf is a powerful means of rallying and activating the masses or even creating the overall image, for some countries. As such, sadly, the Olympic Games have long turned from a simple athletic competition into an arena of political battles. Sport is used by the elites as a tool of influence on the world community. Unfortunately, this has led to the fact that the IOC and WADA have long been unable to proclaim their political neutrality and independence. In addition to maneuvering between the interests of those calling the shots, they are plagued by corruption scandals. Examples of such public embarrassments are abound.
The 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro were tarnished by former Brazilian NOC President Carlos Arthur Nuzman being sentenced to thirty years in prison, after the sports official was found guilty of corruption, tax evasion, and money laundering. Sergio Cabral, a former governor of Rio de Janeiro, also ended up in prison, after admitting, in court, that nine IOC members received bribes for votes while choosing the host country of the games. The total amount of bribes was estimated to be about $2.5 million.

Obtaining the rights for hosting prestigious tournaments and, hence, securing thunderous victories for athletes on their home turf is a powerful means of rallying and activating the masses or even creating the overall image, for some countries. As such, sadly, the Olympic Games have long turned from a simple athletic competition into an arena of political battles. Sport is used by the elites as a tool of influence on the world community. Unfortunately, this has led to the fact that the IOC and WADA have long been unable to proclaim their political neutrality and independence. In addition to maneuvering between the interests of those calling the shots, they are plagued by corruption scandals. Examples of such public embarrassments are abound.
The 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro were tarnished by former Brazilian NOC President Carlos Arthur Nuzman being sentenced to thirty years in prison, after the sports official was found guilty of corruption, tax evasion, and money laundering. Sergio Cabral, a former governor of Rio de Janeiro, also ended up in prison, after admitting, in court, that nine IOC members received bribes for votes while choosing the host country of the games. The total amount of bribes was estimated to be about $2.5 million.
In 2017, an investigation was launched into the misuse of state funds and the lack of transparency of the bids when signing contracts, as a result of which the offices of the Organizing Committee (Cojop) and GIP 2024 of the Paris 2024 Olympics were raided in the summer of 2023.
The corruption case of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics is still ongoing. Last year, a high-ranking member of the organizing committee, Haruyuki Takahashi, the leader of the corruption scheme, was arrested. Recently, Japanese courts have handed down several convictions. The scheme is simple: one gives a bribe and, in return, receives partner status, bypassing honest competition. Also, among the names of the involved entities, are the leaders of companies that had signed contracts with the organizers.

In addition to theft, incidents of utilizing double standards on the use of doping in relation to different countries have become public knowledge more than once. Some countries get tough sanctions, while others don’t even get a slap on the wrist. The only answer to this could be found in seeking alternative sporting grounds that already exist and are growing rapidly, such as the Games of the Future, the World Friendship Games, and the BRICS Games. If the range is now 560 km, then the sanitary corridor is one equal to the north/south length of the whole country.
Hence, this decision by 'Biden' not only goes against this 'ceasefire talk', and lies from media about Trump creating a 'buffer zone' with 800 troops, or 800 miles of buffer, or 800 profound wishes, it gives Russia the justification to create a cordone sanitaire across all of Ukraine.
We always understood that regime change was part of this SMO.
In a strange way, this puts everything back on track.

Carved in stone; it's Russian land
On the territory of the Vyborg district of the Leningrad Region, enthusiastic researchers have mapped a new boundary stone from the time of the Peace of Nystad in 1721 between Russia and Sweden. This is the 23rd stone discovered in Russia. One of the researchers, Sergey Danilov, told «Fontanka».
The discovery was made near the village of Borodinskoye in the Kamennogorsk urban settlement.

On the territory of the Vyborg district of the Leningrad Region, enthusiastic researchers have mapped a new boundary stone from the time of the Peace of Nystad in 1721 between Russia and Sweden. This is the 23rd stone discovered in Russia. One of the researchers, Sergey Danilov, told «Fontanka».
The discovery was made near the village of Borodinskoye in the Kamennogorsk urban settlement.

Stunning parallels in the history of the Great Northern War 1700-1721
The anniversary of the announcement of the Nystad Peace Treaty of 1721 is a good occasion to reflect on the parallels to present-day.
We wrote about the final phase of that war in an article at Beorn’s Beehive «An Honest Deal. How Peter I Bought the Baltic Territories from Sweden».
Here are some fragments of interest:
It seemed that after the victories of the Russian army on land, the occupation of the Baltic territories and Finland, as well as the restoration of the anti-Swedish coalition, Charles XII had to make peace, but that was not to be. Sweden received help from the West. The British Empire did not like the course of events in Eastern Europe and the appearance of a new strong European power on the world map, so London began to provide full support to Stockholm. The goal of the British was to exhaust both belligerents and, thus, eliminate competitors in the Baltic region.
It was the Swedes who had the hardest time as a result of this. The war and mobilisations left only old people, women and children in the villages and towns. The population of the kingdom almost halved from 1700 to 1718 – from 1.2 million people to 600-700 thousand people (the lands on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea were lost). Industry and trade declined. The merchant fleet reduced to a 1/3 of its former self – from 775 ships in 1697 to 209 in 1718. The treasury was empty. At the same time in Russia there was, on the contrary, a rapid growth of the economy – new production facilities were opened, a fleet was built, new territories were developed. The position of the Russian authorities on the possible conditions of a peace treaty has also become tougher. If before Poltava, Peter the Great offered modest terms of peace: to leave the Izhora land (Ingria-Ingermanland) with St. Petersburg and Narva, for which the tsar was ready to pay a ransom, then each year, as Russia strengthened and Sweden weakened, the demands grew.
In 1718, Charles XII was killed during the storming of a small Norwegian fortress, and in 1719 Sweden itself received the last warning – the fleet under Admiral Apraksin landed troops in the Stockholm area. Russian troops did not waste time on the siege of the fortresses, swirling through the suburbs of the Swedish capital. The lesson turned out to be notable, at least in Sweden itself they still remember how Russian Cossacks pranced around the outskirts of Stockholm. After such a demonstration, those in London realised that it was pointless to hope for the exhaustion of Russia. The British did not plan to engage in a direct collision with the Russian fleet, and therefore their behaviour completely changed – now the British allies themselves were forcing the Swedes to peace.

On September 10 1721, in the city of Nystad (Nishtadt in Russian, the current Finnish town of Uusikaupunki), a peace treaty was signed between Sweden and Russia, according to which Russia received the territories of Livonia, Estonia, Ingermanland, and parts of Karelia. The coast from Vyborg to the borders with East Prussia was transferred to Peter the Great – this was the very “window to Europe” that the Russian tsar cut open.
Peter actually bought the Baltic States at the same time; for the concession of Livonia, Russia paid Sweden 2 million thalers, a fairly significant amount for that time, about a third of the annual state budget of our country and the annual budget of Sweden itself. But why would the victor pay the vanquished for those lands? According to the historian, Professor of St. Petersburg State University Pavel Krotov, it was a cunning diplomatic move as Poland continued to claim Livonia, which was part of it until 1629. And according to the agreement at the beginning of the war, Russia had to cede this territory after the victory over Sweden.
In return, the Swedes pledged to never again claim the restoration of control over the Baltics.

The same detonated munition sent several of our soldiers to the hospital with chlorine poisoning.
Each smoke container is marked “NBK DM 1216” – “NBK” stands for Nebelkörper (“smoke element”) in German.

Length (including fuse): 875 mm
